Spotted this lonely tree, and amazingly still leafless, on a visit to my sister a few days ago. With a handy lay-by next to the field it was too good an opportunity to miss. Sony A7MII/16-35mm.

The Kings Mill Reservoir is located between the towns of Mansfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield, sandwiched between the A38 and A617. The site covers 31.8ha and includes a lake, marshy reed bed, grassland and has the River Maun running through it. Its purpose was to provide sufficient head of water to power a succession of working mills along the river. At the northern end of the reservoir you will discover England's oldest railway viaduct and beyond this you'll find a smaller body of water, the Hermitage nature reserve locally known as 'Dead Man's Valley' and is accessed by crossing the viaduct, the entrance is then on the right.

What a great sunset last night here in Nottinghamshire.

The Kings Mill Reservoir site covers 31.8ha including a lake, marshy reedbed, woodland, grassland and has the River Maun running through it. The Reservoir has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve.

The main vehicle access is off the A617 Mansfield to Newark road. There is a carpark and café which is run by Strawberry Fayre. The site is well used by local people and is owned/managed by Ashfield District Council.

The reservoir provides recreation facilities such as The Mill Adventure Base, Sailing (only boats from Sutton Sailing Club or the Mill Base are allowed on the water), Angling (NAA members plus day tickets), Bird Watching (about 200 species recorded), Walking and Cycling. There are occasional public events.

There is a "Friends" group who work with Ashfield Council staff to create a clean, pleasant and interesting amenity for local people and to promote an interest in nature conservation.

Although Kings Mill comes under the Reservoir Act 1975 it is 'not for drinking' water. It's purpose was to provide sufficient head of water to power a succession of working mills; the last of which was cleared for housing in the 1970s.

In the wake of Dudley, Eunice and Franklin, I took the opportunity to nip over to Kings Mill Viaduct Waterfall, this morning and I'm glad that I did. I reckon that this is the heaviest flow that I have seen, there!

The Long Gallery at Hardwick houses a set of thirteen Flemish tapestries from the late 16th century. Collectively known as the Gideon Tapestries they tell the Story of Gideon one of the seven Judges to appear in the Old Testament Book of Judges. In the Book God calls on Gideon to deliver the people of Israel from the Midianites and restore them to his worship. The tapestry on the right of this photo shows Gideon choosing his army of 300 men that would go on to rout the Midianites.

The National Trust has recently completed a £1.7m 24-year long conservation project to preserve the tapestries.

The park is mainly comprised of grassed areas with areas of woodland and avenues of trees. The lake is located in the south east of the park, and is well used by anglers and walkers. Rumbles café is located to the west of the site and is located close to the play areas, a skate park, ball court and outdoor gym. The site also has bowling and tennis clubs.

I know there are numerous vape shops popping up all over the place, but to see one on the site of a former petrol station seems somewhat unusual.

Formerly this was a Shell petrol station, this was still trading in May 2011, appearing to have been a vape shop for sometime by 2015
