This was the Entrance Hall. This part of the house contains the only remnants of the plasterwork for which the house was admired. This photograph was taken looking through what was the doorway from the Main Staircase. The doorway pictured would have taken you through to the Dining Room.
The house was designed by the architect Francis Smith from 1724. The ruin encases an earlier house that stood on the site.
Edward Poynton of Nottingham carved the exterior stonework. The house contained some very fine stucco plasterwork made by two Italian master craftsmen Arturi and Vasalli. It is thought that Grinling Gibbons contributed some of the interior wood carvings.
In 1919 the estate was broken up and the house sold. The buyers sold the internal features as architectural salvage. The house was quickly reduced to being a shell. Some rooms still exist in the United States. Three interiors are displayed at the Museum of Art in Philadelphia. It is also possible to see a pine-panelled room from this house at the Huntington Library, California.

The house was saved by the writer Sir Osbert Sitwell in the 1940's. When Sir Osbert died in 1969 the ruins were given to the Ministry of Works and are now in the care of English Heritage. When I first visited here in the 1980's you could not enter the ruins. The interior of the ruin was littered with fallen masonry, beams and lumps of plaster and general debris. The debris was cleared out and the ruin made safe so that it has been possible to walk through the interior since the late 1990's.
On its way to Lichfield Trent Valley, Central Trains' No. 323240 calls at Sutton Coldfield in November 2003 whilst working a duty on the CrossCity line.
Sutton Campground is located just off the Pacific Coast in Oregon, 1.5 miles from Sutton Beach and 2 miles from Sutton Lake. The 80-site campground is set among scenic coastal pine, Douglas-fir, spruce, wax myrtle and huckleberry. Some sites offer electric hookups. A look at Sutton Coldfield Station. This was when I headed back to the station.
The station is on the Cross-City Line (north) between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent Valley.
It's between Railway Road and Station Street.
The station was built in 1862. Repairwork took place in 2003.
This time I returned via the Station Street entrance.
Most of the children of Sutton put on their best clothes to attend the Peace Day celebrations of July 26 1919. Although the armistice was signed the previous November bringing an end to fighting the peace treaty was not signed until June 28 1919 officially ending the war.

The following is an extract from History Of Sutton Quaker Meeting 1932-2010 by G Gordon Steel:
1940 February: ‘William H. Curtis has drawn our attention to certain premises in Worcester Gardens which might be suitable, after alteration, for use as a Meeting House’. Premises Committee: ‘This property is a detached house of eleven rooms, in a cul-de- sac within two or three minutes walk of Sutton Main-line station, and Worcester Gardens leads off the Brighton Road, the main street running through Sutton. The house has probably been built some 40-50 years, and the land has a frontage of about 54 feet and a depth of about 120 feet. It is for sale freehold, and is, we are given to understand, quite unrestricted.’
March: A contract is sought ‘at a price not exceeding £650’.
So, the large dwelling was purchased as a meeting house. By 1958 it became apparent that it was not large enough and a purpose-built meeting room was erected behind it in 1959.
