Sutton Park Station on 26/09/80.

Situated on the Midland Railway's Walsall to Water Orton line, Sutton Park station closed to passengers in 1965. The main station building lingered on in commercial use for many years but is now demolished. The Sutton Park line itself is still open as a busy freight route.

This view was taken from the Station's public approach off Clifton Drive.

A few more from this morning's walk in Sutton Park; all these have had a little after-processing to try and balance the light.

The platform in front of the camera was used for trains to Walsall, whilst that across the tracks was for services to Birmingham New Street. The far platform is actually an island, a third line once running behind the rampant vegetation.

This view was taken from the old platform where trains for Birmingham once called. We're looking across the tracks towards the main station building on the Walsall platform.

Running north toward Sutton Coldfield, the signalbox and station can be seen in the distance. The left-hand signal here controlled entry into the goods yard / Motorail terminal. The long-disused headshunt can just be seen to the left.

Suttons Pump is seen in its stations yard. note this has had the new livery put on two.

The church of St Thomas Becket in Sutton under Brailes dates mainly from the 13th to late 14th centuries, though the north door belongs to an earlier Norman building. The tower unusually also forms the south porch and main entrance. On the north side of the nave is a protruding alcove that may have formed an anchorite's cell or a small chapel.

Inside the Victorian restoration left the walls stripped of plaster, though suprisingly there is little stained glass (only the two windows on the south wall of the chancel, though the tracery lights of the west window suggest more Victorian glass was perhaps removed to lighten up the interior at some stage).

There are some notable carved heads from c1300, particularly a man and a woman (in contemporary headwear) and an external frieze of grotesque and animal heads on the chancel.
