If you’ve ever travelled the M1 to the south of Sheffield you may have seen this old building on a hillside to the east and (like me) wondered what it was. Well, now you know. I’d passed it many times and was interested to know some history but not until this week did I get to visit and find out more about this iconic building.

A4 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' is pushed over the Weaver Navigation at Sutton Weaver near Frodsham returning The Fellsman back from Carlisle to Chester. I believe No7 had been pushed from the rear by the 47 at the back for most of the return journey having reportedly set off fires on the S&C. The sun had set a couple of minutes before (21:15) but left some lovely colours in the sky.

( A bit of trailing smoke has been borrowed from another image as there was nothing out of the chimney )

The original name for Plymouth was Sutton, and it was only in the 20th century that we saw the vast expansion of Plymouth to take in and absorb neighbouring towns to become the vast metropolis that we know today. The oldest part of modern-day Plymouth is the Barbican, which is on the south side of Sutton Harbour, and just out of shot to the right of the picture.

This shot was taken from the old fish quay, and although the fish market moved across to the other side of the harbour a long time ago, several fishing boats still tie up here regularly.

68014 is seen at the classic location overlooking Kings Sutton as it passes hauling 1J53 18:07 London Marylebone - Stourbridge Junction. The locomotive carries a special livery celebrating its use of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) as a sustainable fuel.

The coaching set in tow, AL03 is currently formed up with just 5 coaches rather than the usual 6 + DVT. These Mk3 coaches are now very much in the twilight of their careers as a deal has now finally been struck for Chiltern Railways to take on the 13 sets of Mk5 coaches made redundant by Transpennine.

Training has already begun with the newer trains, which could displace the ageing Mk3's by the end of the year, together with a different set of class 68 locomotives, all of which it is intended will be HVO powered.

We haven't been out today, spent the day with Steves Family :)) so hear are 3 more from Sutton :)
