Surrounded by nothing but turquoise lagoon which melts into sapphire blue, the Maldives island of Anantara Kihavah and its pure white sands rise up out of the ocean like a mirage.

For centuries, this was where Arab traders sailing to the Far East took shelter; a lush paradise blessed by coconut, papaya and mango trees. Navigating archipelago to archipelago by the stars, the seafarers were also drawn by the riches of the ocean surrounding the island – where a prehistoric volcano sank back into the depths, leaving blooming corals within a house reef and a wealth of lagoon fish.

Wishing to keep the pristine nature of the island intact, not one tree has been moved – as evidenced by the villas growing up around them. The design pays homage to the seafarers of old, fusing Indian Ocean, Arab and Portuguese motifs with indigenous materials.

The waters of Lagoa das Furnas perfectly reflect the green vegetation that dresses the surrounding mountains and ravines - a scenario that does not even seem real

Monrepos (Seeschloss Monrepos) is a lakeside Palace in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Although quite far and almost separate from Favorite Palace and Ludwigsburg Palace, it is connected to the rest of the grounds by way of pedestrian paths. It is one of the two minor palaces on the estate, along with the main one. The smaller ones were used as hunting lodges.

Since the 16th century, the Dukes of Württemberg enjoyed hunting along the Eglosheimer Lake. In 1714, Duke Eberhard Ludwig had an octagonal pavilion, the Seehäuslein ("Little Lake House"), constructed on the northern shore.

Of all three, this is the only one that is still owned by the royal family of Württemberg after its overthrow in 1918. Much of the privately owned land surrounding Monrepos is now an 18-hole golf course, unlike the state-owned part, which is made up of parks and museums.

My latest ANIMAL VIDEO (warning, it's a bit shocking): www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T2-Xszz7FI

ABOUT THE PHOTO:

The photo above was taken this past May and shows parts of my garden and the surrounding hills just as the sun was setting after a heavy thunderstorm, which is when the light and the colors are at their most intense, most magical; it was one of those rare moments that usually only last for a few minutes (sometimes not even that), and you have to be quick to capture them.

The reason I like the photo quite a bit is that it shows a side of my country that is far less known to the people abroad than our snowy mountains and green meadows with friendly cows or the glitz of St. Moritz, Zermatt and Zurich: it shows you "my" tropical Switzerland 😊.

And the thing is, the spot in Ticino where I'm fortunate enough to own a vacation home - a tiny, 400-year old stone building only 70 meters from the Italian border - doesn't just look like it lies in the tropics: it actually sort of does, at least during the summer months.

With temperatures frequently in the mid 30s (Celsius) and a level of humidity that is high enough to make you break out in a sweat the second you leave the house, the micro-climate is not that dissimilar from what you might find in a rain forest.

The air can grow so heavy that people unaccustomed to it might feel like they have a hard time breathing (when friends of mine who originally are from Brazil visited me for a couple of days during a particularly hot period, even they struggled and told me they felt as if they were inhaling steam).

On the plus-side, this tropical micro-climate allows the people in our village to grow lemons, peaches, figs and kiwi fruits in addition to the more traditional apricots, grapes apples and cherries, and even palm trees like the one in this photo are a very common sight throughout the region.

Luckily our houses are traditionally built in a way to keep out the heat even during the hottest months, so the few remaining permanent residents of the village (around 40 people most of whom are over the age of sixty), find soothing cool as soon as they enter the thick stone walls of their homes.

The village itself is built on a rock that is surrounded by dense chestnut forest on all sides that stretches on until the horizon, only interrupted every now and then by a village, a vineyard or a small stream in a valley with a few fields.

So it's hardly a surprise that this tiny tropical paradise is a place where a great variety of beautiful insects, snakes and colorful lizards (that most people probably wouldn't immediately associate with typical Swiss fauna either) feel very much at home, and I feel incredibly blessed that I need only step outside and enter my garden to capture it with my camera 😊.

In case people are interested I might upload a photo that shows a bit more of our village one day, but for now I'll continue to stick with my beloved "creepy crawlies" (as some of my friends here jokingly refer to them) and continue to concentrate on nature, wildlife and landscape photos. 😉

I hope you like the photo and wish you all a wonderful weekend! Many greetings from Switzerland, and as always: let me know what you think in the comments 🙏 😊 ❤!

P.S. This is probably going to be my last upload in 2022, so HAPPY HOLIDAYS everyone!! 🎄💕🎉😃!!

Hiking in Switzerland ; Grindelwald , First , above Bachsee . No. 8968.

"It's impossible to imagine the Swiss mountain world as more idyllic than the area surrounding Lake Bachalpsee. The snow-covered peaks of the Alps are reflected in the crystal clear blue water.

First is the starting point for hikes and it offers action: An adrenaline rush and speed thrills are guaranteed on the First Flyer, trottibike scooters or bikes. Children can have fun on the 700-m² playground at the Bort intermediate station."

Die obere Bergstation heisst ebenfalls First (2'167 m ü.

The name "vaseux" is French, meaning muddy or murky, which is descriptive of the lake's silty water. The lake was likely named by French Canadian fur traders.

Vaseaux Lake features a variety of wetland and foreshore habitats that support large populations of migratory bird species along the inland portion of the Pacific Flyway. Bird species of note include trumpeter swan, great blue heron, western screech-owl, yellow-breasted chat, and the red-listed Lewis's woodpecker. It is for these reasons that the Canadian Wildlife Service designated the lake and its foreshore a Migratory Bird Sanctuary in 1923.

The semi-arid grasslands and forests surrounding the lake are also of ecological importance, and are protected within several different national and provincial protected areas. In 1956, the provincial government established Vaseux Lake Provincial Park at the northeastern end of the lake to providing space for recreation while also ensuring the ecological integrity of the lake's foreshore in this area is preserved.

In 1979, the Canadian Wildlife Service established Vaseux-Bighorn National Wildlife Area to protect winter rangeland for California Bighorn Sheep.[6] The provincial government added on to this nature preserve by establishing Vaseux Protected Area in 2001. (Wikipedia).

Looking down the length of Vaseux Lake. It doesn't seem murky to me. We did see plenty of birds, though :-)

This Sparrowhawk hunts my garden and the surrounding gardens it can occasionally be seen flying at amazing speed in such a confined space as such gardens offer . Luckily for the local songbirds this one seems to have a taste for the small feral Pigeons that tuck their nests by the solar panels on the neighboring houses .

The earth together with its surrounding waters must in fact have such a shape as its shadow reveals, for it eclipses the moon with the curve of a perfect circle.

The Finsteraarhorn (4,274 m (14,022 ft)) is the highest mountain in the Bernese Alps and the highest mountain in the canton of Berne. It is also the highest summit in the Alps lying outside the main chain, or watershed. The Finsteraarhorn is the ninth highest and third most prominent peak in the Alps. Since 2001 the whole massif and surrounding glaciers are part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site.

This historic mill and surrounding houses are located along the Baltimore Pike in Glen Mills, PA. As the story goes it is haunted by a woman from the mid-1800s who lost her 15-year-old son in the civil war. She became so distraught she threw herself into the swiftly moving mill stream and drowned. I believe this house is the miller house where she lived if the story is authentic.

A view of Phra Sawet Kudakhan Wihan Yot from the Ramakien Gallery surrounding Wat Phra Kaew.

Wikipedia: The Phra Sawet Kudakhan Wihan Yot (พระเศวตกุฏาคารวิหารยอด) or the Wihan Yot extends northwards from the terrace. The building, a vihara, serves as a Buddha image hall, and was first built by Rama III to house many important Buddha images. The building has a cruciform plan and is topped in the middle of the roof with a tall spire in the form of a crown. The spire is decorated with colored porcelain in floral designs. The top of the window arches display the royal cypher of Rama V under a crown; this indicates that vihara was restored by the King. Bronze figures of Tantima birds—birds with a human torso and Garuda head—guard the entrances on the west and east sides. The doors of the vihara feature mother-of-pearl inlay and were taken from Wat Pa Mok in Ang Thong Province.

After the visit to San Gimignano and surrounding areas I spend three days in a beautiful Country Hotel named Borgo Tre Rose, with 360° of view of the wonderful hills and vineyards of Tuscany.

I intended to visit Pienza, Val d'Orcia and Lago Trasimeno, unforgetable places of the Tuscany and Umbria region, but unfortunately I had not health conditions to do this.

As you can see in the next photos this place is very pleasant and appropriate to relax. The view from there is fabulous, and the amount of flowers had enchanted me and made me forget for a while everything that I have missed in this region.

London – In and around Brick Lane

This collection of images was taken in and around Brick Lane, London. This is an area full of New and Old Architecture, Markets, People, Graffiti, Doors, Churches and much more.

This selection is mainly Graffiti, Doors and Shop Fronts. I have made up some frames out of Doors, Walls and Other Material, hope they fit the purpose.

This is the first of a number of postings.

The surrounding city walls acted as a tripod, when capturing this long exposure shot of the distant night view from the hill town of Todi, Umbria. It has been described in the Italian press as the world's most liveable city.

On the other side of the Taj Mahal is the Jawab, a building that is a false mosque erected to correspond to or balance the true mosque on the western side. The Jawab is thought to have been used as a guest house.

On the Wall Trail, the former death strip between West Berlin and the surrounding GDR, you can today indulge in cherry blossoms for hundreds of meters: Between Lichterfelde-South and Teltow are around 1100 trees in the TV Asahi Cherry Blossom Avenue.

The action goes back to the Japanese TV broadcaster TV Asahi. In 1990 he called for a large fundraiser in Japan, in which around 20,000 Japanese donated the equivalent of around one million euros.

In November 1990, the first of around 10,000 trees were planted along the former wall strip, and from April 1995 the TV-Asahi cherry blossom avenue on the Wall Path. The Hanami (cherry blossom festival), which has been celebrated since the end of April, was canceled this year.

This coyote has given me some great photo opportunities lately. He has been seen in a cemetery that also has fields, woods, and a swamp area surrounding it.

I took the shots of this wonderful group of five trees yesterday at sunset. The group with this wonderful clouds and the surrounding is a highlight of my franconian experiences. We were lucky with this remarkable sunset and the nice weather.

Each Spring, the Hortus here puts out an array of tubs planted with tulip bulbs. This year the first flowers to sprout from the green are Alborz Lowly Tulips, which originally hail from northern Iran and the surrounding area. This Tulip was introduced to Europe in the middle of the nineteenth century and first flowered in England in 1844.
