I visited the the iconic statue "Unconditional Surrender" down at the port. This sculpture was inspired by the classic photo of a nurse embraced in a kiss with a sailor in Times Square during World War II. The sculpture is on loan with the Port of San Diego.

This image, taken in December 2013 near the intersection of Spring and Los Coyotes Diagonal, appeared in the Long Beach Register on January 2, 2014. The sculpture, "Unconditional Surrender," was on the USS Iowa and apparently in transport to its next destination.

The British were going to supply a much nicer table, but at the last minute it was realized that their table was too small for the formal documents. A folding table from the mess was brought up, wiped off, and covered with a green tablecloth. It was on that table, a table from the mess, covered in stains and cigarette burns, scratches and gouges, that the surrender was signed.
