A U.S. Army color guard and firing detail from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) were part of the opening ceremonies April 9, 2015, for a special observance and reenactment for the 150th anniversary of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant April 9, 1865, at Appomattox, Va. The Old Guard served at Appomattox in 1865. "Unconditional Surrender", a 25-foot statue created by renowned artist J. Seward Johnson, was temporarily taken down from its location along the bayfront in Sarasota, FL so that it can undergo maintenance in New Jersey. It was dismantled in three sections.
