Brought back to the states by Grandpa MacDonald in 1946, after the Japanese Surrender in WW2. He served aboard the USS Flint CL-97, an Atlanta Class light cruiser.

She was launched in 1944 with Grandpa MacDonald onboard as the radarman. She paricipated in the landings at okinawa, luzon and Iwo Jima providing cover for marines. she apparently saw lots of combat...rescued pilots, and prepared the way for invading Japan. After the surrender she was briefly stationed in Japan and thats where George obtained this souvenir. I know little about it....he never talked about the war or anything for that fact....I only know he saw the Yorktown go down. It appears to be an Arisaka Type-38 rifle and Type-30 bayonet. I dont know if it was ever used but it is a mean looking thing....a reminder that the marines faced in the S Pacific a sophisticated and capable army...one that left many Americans behind in the wake of brutal and ugly fighting (read E B Sledge's "with the old breed" for a hair raising description of the horror of warfare...and the ability to forgive, move on and see hated enemies with a new consciousness)

Something he is constantly saying lately!

This is the Mormon Temple in Bethesda, MD. The bridge that crosses the beltway just in front of us frequently carries the graffito "Surrender Dorothy!", when it's not blacked out by diligent road crews.

It did not take long to know who the winner was in this little confrontation. The crow, to escalate the row, took a few hopping steps towards the kite as if to challenge it. The kite then thought it best to quit the scene handicapped as it was with the precious twig in its beak. It took off, circled the tree and landed on the other side where the nest is being built. Thus ended this little tiff between the crow and kite. To know how it all began, click here!

Before he became the duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt was the earl of Richmond from 1351. surrendering the title in June 1372 when he married his 2nd wife Constance of Castile and took the title king of Castile.

Gaunt was a rich man having married heiress Blanch of Lancaster, many joined his retinue of retainers including Walter who was paid £40 per annum +++.

Master of Game & Chief Forester to John of Gaunt in the new forest of Swaledale, and of Bowland charged from time to time with supplying game & wood..

(1374 - to deliver as much venison to the gentry of the neighbourhood as could be conveniently spared) and (to deliver 6 oaks fit for building. and in the year 1383)

He was also Constable of Richmond Castle in 1371 and a magistrate.

Interestingly Sir Walter's indenture has conditions only attached to peacetime service.

However despite not having agreed to serve in Gaunt’s retinue in times of war he fought Navarre and was knighted there on 3rd April 1366 . Froissart also mentions him with Gaunt in Bruges.

+++ "I John, son of the noble King of England, Duke of Lancaster, &c., &c„ to all whom these letters may concern, greeting I Know you that for the good and friendly service which our well-beloved Master Walter de Urswick has done us in our expedition to Spain, and for others he will render in time

to come, and also to enable him the better to maintain the order of knighthood which he took of us on the day of the battle of Najara, we have given and granted to him for the term of his. life £40 a year, to be taken, year by year, in round sums, at the hands of our general Receiver for the time being out of the issues of our Manors of Catterick and Forcet, in our county of Richmond"’
