On May 12, 2006 I had surgery to remove my sigmoid colon (about one foot) due to recurrent acute diverticulitis that would not heal. I had been hospitalized three times between early January and mid-March of 2006 for the infection, and surgery was finally deemed the best cure. This photo is about 48 hours after surgery, and you can see my stomach is still swollen with the gas they used to inflate me for the laparoscopic surgery--a rather new procedure for this type of problem. The big cut on my bellybutton was used to remove the piece of colon, and the incision on the lower right (my left) was used to perform most of the work. The two smallest incisions, on the left (my right), where used for lights and tools. Pretty cool, although I was pretty miserable. The good thing is that the procedure worked as planned.
the tendons were retracted after the incident with a meat knife... the second surgery gave me another scar inside the hand...

Today I made the brave decision to have some laser eye surgery! I'm not getting on with my glasses at all, so have decided to have it done. I'm very nervous, I hate anything to do with my eyes, and of course it's going to cost a packet! In an effort to distract myself from the forthcoming procedure! I've come up with this picture of my operation LOL!!

Third look at my busted knee after surgery. All healed!
I somehow tore the meniscus (the disc of cartilate separating your legs bones, inside the knee) in December 2009. I was limping and sore for two months before a CAT scan revealed the tear. I had surgery in mid-March 2010. I spent three weeks recuperating slowly.

Imagine … a pregnant woman goes into labor. She sleeps for 2 ½ straight days and is hospitalized for a week. Upon waking, what she learns is that her doctor performed a sexual surgery on her without her consent. She is not his only victim …
Well I had surgery this morning at 8:00am. I desperately wanted to stay on top of my 365 for a while, and so while they were prepping me for surgery I took a couple of pictures of my IV. And I edited the picture and am writing this while on oxycodone. I have also been editing engagement pictures (from the engagement session forever ago) all day, so those could be interesting. But, I am not supposed to walk much for a couple days still so editing pictures is what I will be occupying my time with. I apologize if I post a million things in the next few days.

A surgical procedure to disconnect the lower part of the small bowel from the bowel and pulling it through an incision in the abdominal wall is known as ileostomy surgery. There can be various reasons that your doctor may choose to give you an ileostomy. Those reasons mainly include ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, cancer, and familial polyposis.
The main aim of an #ileostomy is to divert the passage of wastes away from the colon and towards an opening in the #abdomen. This opening is known as a stoma. The surgeon does it after removing or resting the diseased part of the bowel. It allows bodily wastes to leave the body through the stoma. This surgical procedure is generally a lifesaving operation.
Another type of #intestinal #ostomy is the #colostomy, which involves pulling out of a part of the colon. The surgeon, during colostomy surgery, dissects the colon to separate the healthy section of the colon from the diseased part. He then pulls the healthy end out of a cut in the abdomen to create a stoma after removing or resting the diseased section. The surgical technique to create an ileostomy is the same as that of a colostomy.
Ileostomy surgery
The surgeon puts the patient to sleep by administering general #anesthesia. The place of the stoma will depend on the site of the illness and the patient’s preferences or needs. The incision to start the procedure is usually 8 inches long down the midline on the patient’s abdomen. This incision dissects the abdominal skin, muscles, and subcutaneous tissues. The procedure may involve the removal of the #colon alongside or excluding the colon and rectum, depending on how much the disease has spread. The surgeon also closes the anal canal with the help of stitches.
An ileostomy can be temporary or permanent, based on the type or severity of the disorder. The two basic types of permanent ileostomy are a convention and continent ileostomy. The convention or Brooke ileostomy necessitates the patient to wear an ostomy bag the entire time. The stoma drains all the fecal materials into the ostomy bag. With this ileostomy, you are going to have no control over when you move your bowels, as a stoma doesn’t have any #sphincter #muscles. A continent ileostomy consists of an internal reservoir inside the abdomen. There will be a stoma on the belly, but it will not need an ostomy bag to cover it. You will be able to draw waste materials out of your internal pouch through a flexible catheter. The two types of continent ileostomy include a Kock pouch and BCIR.
Contrary you what you may have been thinking, an ileostomy gives you a chance to start a healthy and happy life after getting rid of the life-threatening condition. Some people acknowledge that their ileostomies have helped them to be even more active and healthier after the procedure because their quality of life was not that good before surgery due to illness. It all comes down to the mindset.
If you have a bowel condition so severe that your doctor recommends an ileostomy, be sure to discuss everything and clear your doubts instead of being stressed about the prospects of losing a body function.

Today I had surgery on my left eye to remove a small, strange piece of skin on my tear duct. All went well. Check out the pupils, though. The doc said this would happen. Funny.

Entrance to the surgery building.
Beelitz-Heilstätten west of Berlin, is an amazing complex of 60 abandoned and derelict hospital buildings. The oldest buildings are from 1898 drawn by architect Heino Schmieden.
The complex became a war hospital during WW1. In 1916 Adolf Hitler was recovering here after being shot in the leg in the Battle of the Somme.
After WW2 the hospital was occupied by Soviet forces. They left in 1995.

Pre-surgery X-Rays. Both of my feet have painful bunions, but the left one is a little more severe and painful, so I'll get that one corrected first. The sesamoid bone (which will be removed during surgery) is the shadowy little protrusion on the inside of my big toe (between the big toe and 2nd toe). **I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of my elder relatives on the Bracker side of the family. Heredity has been known to factor into the presence of bunions, and I know several of you have had similar surgeries, too.
