BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, 07 AUGUST 2000 --- Dora Frank holds a mirror to her husband Viktor so he can examine himself in the recovery room at Budapest' Professio Clinic. The 29-year-old Hungarian born woman had come to have her nose reduced and re-shaped, while her 60-year-old Swiss engineer husband had silicon breast implants. Many West Europeans now come to Hungary for plastic surgery because such proceedures are many times less expensive than in Western Europe. .

I had hernia surgery last week. If you think that looks bad you should see my bank account! I've made a bucket list and one of the items is to look like the guy on the right.
Picture of my Right Knee during surgery April 15, 1999. It was over healing and swelled up pretty nicely. Day surgery cured it and I was walking 3 days later without crutches.
Whenever there is a Live Demo in the operating room (as in they do the surgery in the operating room on the 3rd floor and the view is transferred to our Auditorium in the 8th Floor), the Director of the Hospital always wants me to take pictures of the Guest Doctor performing the surgery and straight away print the pictures to be given as presents.
This time, I'm using Canon 7D with the 18-135mm kit lens the hospital just bought. Usually I used Sony point and shot.
Pretty hard to take pictures with doctors body blocking the view. I only got the light from the Surgical Lamp pointing from above and the room light.
The Kit lens can reach the object in quite the distance, which amazed me. This maxed out the 135mm.
In this image, I tweaked the White Balance using 2500K (as suggested by Joe McNally's Hot Shoes Diaries).

A general surgeon and his wife and a Urologist and his wife (a neurosurgeon) get down at the surgery party.
The surgery department at Sky Lakes Medical Center had a party Friday night at Yesterday's Plaza, downtown Klamath Falls. The reason for the party was to get to meet the new orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Knudsen, who we all know already; but that's okay because it looks like everybody had fun. Dr Knudsen played bass guitar in both of the bands that played at the party. (Sorry, I don't recall the band names right now.)

I got some invaluable advice following hospital discharge from a friend who is GP who has specialised in Nutritional Medicine. He pointed out that the hospital surgery was like a quick pitstop, designed to deal with the immediate crisis and then get me well enough to be released. He made it clear that I still had a long way to go in my recovery and I eventually ended up taking the following, based on the advice from this Doctor, another friend with knowledge in the area, a naturopath and a pharmacist:
- Vit C - build up to 2000mg to 3000mg a day (too much at once can cause diarrhoea)
- Zinc drink in the am, with Vit. C (to aid its absorption) - whilst the drink tastes OK, keep drinking it; when it starts to taste furry, the body has had enough.
- Half a teaspoon of high dose acidopholus powder morning and evening to replace the stomach bacteria which had been stripped due to large doses of antibiotics in hospital to fight the peritonitis
- Iron tablet in the evening, with Vit. C to aid absorption. Zinc and Iron are to be taken 8-10 hours apart since they compete for absorption. Iron is needed to help replace the hameoglobin lost due to blood loss and to rebuild muscle tissue and protein. I lost 4kg of muscle mass in the 11 days between getting sick and being discharged. I also took up eating small medallions of kangaroo meat for dinner and often also lunch and sometimes breakfast for the iron.
Vitamin E
Arnica 200c - a surgical dose of homeopathic Arnica to aid in healing. It is placed under the tongue and absorbed.
Staphisagria 30c - a homeopathic
Multi-B Vitamin - with a mean during the day
I found it difficult in the first week to take pills and used powdered forms where possible or crushed the tablets. The iron was yuck when crushed but everything else was fine.
I dislocated my so-called "good" knee last Thursday, and here's how it looked on Friday. I was carrying a box of colorful tapes down a ladder at work. I have to wear an immobilizer and walk with a cane for 2-3 weeks. Notice how similar it looks to my right knee, which is full of scar tissue from my plentiful surgeries. Update: getting stuck on that ladder fractured my left kneecap in three places.

Spike and Lucy were fixed today. Spike had an additional surgery where he had to have the head of his femur removed.
He scared the vet after surgery because an extra dose of pain meds actually relaxed him to the point he stopped breathing. After 1-2 minutes they were able to get him breathing again, but they did have to tube him.
