To support vulnerable families in the landlocked nation of Niger which has little arable land for farming, Plan International distributed a breeding pair of goats to 440 vulnerable families to provide them with the means to feed their children better, as the goats provide them with milk, cheese, meat and an extra income.
The red-haired Maradi goat is known as the ëdairy cowà of the poor. The species is very prolific as it can give birth to 2, 3 or 4 kids every year. It also produces a good milk yield which is rich in vitamin A and easy to digest, particularly by young children. Its meat is tasty and tender, and its skin is highly sought after for making luxury leather goods.
The goats were distributed to female-headed households living in the regions of Dosso and Maradi who have at least one malnourished child under the age of five.
