Supporting mothers means supporting the children born to them also”…. This is a common wisdom at LECDEN-KENYA, first promoted in 2007, when during a group therapy counseling session, a lady stood up and asked the Directors the saddest question ever to be discussed at a group therapy session -“what happens to our children when we can no longer get the benefits of treatment, as is the obvious with HIV infection?
A lot of advancements have occurred and this wisdom may no longer have a lot of justification, especially because of life-prolonging ARVs. The fact, however, remains that women still succumb to HIV infection in great numbers and more children are being orphaned. Kenya is now home to over 1.5- 2.0 million orphaned children, mostly due to HIV & AIDS complications. Many orphans face devastations of untold proportions, are neglected, abused and at times, have to take on adult roles at such tender age as 10 years, fending for themselves and for their younger siblings
Prevention among the youth in schools
LECDEN-KENYA recognizes the need to continually engage with the youth in and out of schools to strengthen their understanding of HIV & AIDS and to foster positive behaviour change. To this extent, LECDEN conducts several sensitizations in selected primary schools since the year 2005, and formed more 5 AIDS clubs in primary schools in Nairobi, Makueni, Siaya and Homabay . Our community educators also continue with supportive interactions with AIDS clubs that were formed earlier in Nairobi.
Besides the AIDS clubs, LECDEN-KENYA was able to train 5 orphans in skills of tailoring and on how to support behaviour change communication in schools. These interventions have been able to promote a culture of discussing HIV/ADS in schools and demystified HIV infection. Through the AIDS clubs, a great transformation in thinking, perception and understanding of the pupils, their teachers and their parents has occurred.

A peace forum aimed at ensuring inclusive and active participation of South Sudanese communities in peace building has opened in Juba.
More than sixty participants including political, traditional and religious leaders alongside the civil society and representatives of displaced communities, women and youth are attending the three-day forum, supported by the UN Mission in South Sudan in collaboration with other partners.
The overall objective is to tap into the experiences of State and Non-State actors to drive the peace process forward.
Speaking at the opening, the UN Special Representative, David Shearer called on grassroots communities to be “agents of peace.”

Today, June 17, 2017, I joined a ‘Protest Against Theresa May’ outside Downing Street that was called by the journalist Owen Jones and the writer Sara Hanna-Black, where there was no shortage of witty and angry placards aimed at Theresa May, especially after her disastrously poor response to the terrible fire that engulfed Grenfell Tower in west London on Wednesday.
What a difference two months can make in politics. When Theresa May called a snap election at the start of April, she was 20 points ahead of Labour in the polls, and presumed that she would win a landslide victory. Then, on the campaign trail, she was wooden, aloof and unsympathetic, and her manifesto was a disaster, containing a provision for care funding for older people that was instantly dubbed the “dementia tax”, and was vilified by many of her own supporters, and even by the media that generally supported her unconditionally.
In the end, she lost her majority, requiring her to woo the religiously fundamentalist Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to stay in power, and fatally eroded her credibility, while Jeremy Corbyn, Labour’s leader, found an enthusiastic welcome for his anti-austerity message. May, meanwhile, clinging onto power, failed to provide leadership after the Grenfell fire, visiting the site and meeting the emergency services, but failing to meet any of the survivors, in complete contrast to Jeremy Corbyn, who, as usual, showed the common touch - and evident empathy - that led to him increasing Labour’s share of the vote in the General Election by the largest margin since Clement Attlee after World War II.
How long, I have to ask, can Theresa May last - and, just as importantly, how can we make sure that a disaster like Grenfell can never happen again, given the corruption and profiteering of so many of the parties involved in providing social housing to poorer people in the UK?

There was an officially organized support demo for all those that like the idea but for various reasons could not join in the action itself, or didn't feel comfortable joining such a civil disobedient action.

Members of the 4-401st Army Field Support Battalion supervised the beginning stages of construction of new maintenance facilities at Kandahar Air Base. The facilities are capable of supporting many missions including maintenance, storage, or living quarters. The new facilities are scheduled to be completed in the next few months and are being built with the help of Afghan workers. The space will provide critical infrastructure to support the logistical and sustainment needs of U.S. and coalition forces.
About the 401st:
The 401st Army field Support Brigade gives our Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, and Marines, the tools and resources necessary to complete the mission. If they shoot, drive it, fly it, wear it, eat it or communicate with it, the 401st helps to provide it. The brigade also assists coalition partners with many of their logistical and sustainment needs. The brigade will also handle to responsible disposition of equipment in Afghanistan as the mission here changes. The 401st is the single link between warfighters in the field and Army Materiel Command.

"Support is so vital when you are trying to make the transition from a victim to a survivor of domestic abuse. Having DVAC in place when I was fighting for my children and myself would have made such a difference," said Christi Adams (in photo), a survivor of domestic violence.

Washington DC, March 26, 2017. Over a thousand Palestinian rights activists and supporters rallied in front of the White House and marched to the Washington Convention Center to protest the American Israel Public Affairs Committee yearly meeting. Around a dozen activists affiliated with the Jewish youth peace group If Not Now were removed (but not arrested!) by police for blocking one of the many entrances to the AIPAC event. A handful of counter protesters affiliated with AIPAC and the Jewish Defense League were very well protected by DC Police as they taunted the much larger contingent of peace marchers. The event was largely peaceful but some isolated scuffles broke out late in the day.

In the showroom, Victory shows us many of the models of stools which support virtually every butt in Asia. Some of the designs you see here are the same models from their early days (the injection molds often have been replaced, but the design remains the same). Some of the models are new and updated designs, such as the olive green one with the round openings on top. Now Michelle and I pay attention in eateries as to the vintage of the furniture they are using. If you’ve spent any time in Vietnam, or SE Asia in general, you will know the ubiquity of the plastic stool. Followed closely by the plastic chair, these stools are where life happens. Virtually every street food stall, food cart, restaurant, or home makes use of plastic stools and chairs. They are so ubiquitous that most people hardly even give them a second thought. Once you begin to pay attention to these seats, you might notice the brand logo, and then begin to realize that most of the tables, chopstick holders, napkin dispensers, condiment containers, trash cans, cups and dishes, toothpick holders and wash tubs all bear the same logo.
Back in 2011 serendipity connected me with Manh “Victory” Nguyen, whose parents started the company Viet Nhat Plastics in 2002. I wound up spending a few days with Victory and his family; including going fishing with him and his father, enjoying some amazing bun cha Hanoi in the city, and most memorable for me, touring the plastics factory they created.
Returning to Hanoi a decade later, I was excited to reconnect with Victory and introduce Michelle to him and to see how Viet Nhat has changed over the years.
In short, Viet Nhat has grown immensely. Victory’s father has taken a bit of a step back while Victory is now the CEO and his wife Trang runs the accounting. Viet Nhat has expanded to 5 factories, employs over 6000 people, has over 8000 SKUs, added a luxury line, and is the market leader, especially in northern Vietnam.

The photo shows the tools I used to hold a 2x4 against the ceiling of my garage. I was attaching 2x4s to the ceiling to make it easier to hang things and brace things (like free-standing shelves).
The picture was taken part-way through the process of pressing the board to the ceiling. I was acting alone. Based on something I saw in a magazine, and heavily influenced by my make-it-as-complicated-as-possible philosophy, the method I used was this:
1. Mark location on ceiling for the 2x4 ceiling board (hereafter referred to as "ceiling board").
2. Nail two small string cradles to the ceiling near the ends of the proposed position of the ceiling board. The ceiling board will hang temporarily in these cradles.
3. Insert one end of the ceiling board into one cradle, then the other end into the other cradle. Result: the ceiling board is hanging in the two cradles about two inches (5cm) below the ceiling.
4. Place two clamps within easy reach of each end of the ceiling board. They will be used later.
5. Grab two other boards: a pre-cut board that is almost as long as the floor-to-ceiling distance and a short board. These, clamped together, will act as temporary supports for the ceiling board. Stand on a stool under one end of the ceiling board, holding the two supports together vertically.
6. Keeping the supports pressed together, move the short board upward as far as possible, elevating the end of the ceiling board. Clamp the two supports together. RESULT: the very end of the ceiling board is pressed against the ceiling. The other end of the ceiling board is still lying in its cradle.
7. Repeat the raising process at the other end of the ceiling board. RESULT: this end of the ceiling board is now pressed against the ceiling, but the other end is still a bit loose.
8. Return to the first end of the ceiling board, loosen the clamps, repeat the raising process, and re-clamp the supports. RESULT: this end of the hanging board is tight enough against the ceiling to require no more raising.
9. Return (again) to the second end and repeat the raising process there. RESULT: the ceiling board is pressed tightly enough against the ceiling to allow drilling of pilot holes for the screws that will attach the ceiling board to the ceiling.
10. Drill holes, install screws, remove the hanging cradles and supports.
The process is tedious to say the least. But it worked: I attached four 2x4s to the ceiling in this manner. After this work was finished I realized I could have simplified this process by using my stepladders as bases for holding the 2x4s in place. One can buy devices called "third hands" (often used by carpenters and drywall installers) to hold things in place, but I am too cheap to shell out $50 for a tool that gets little use.
I am in a rare fit of industriousness in the garage. That's why I've been inactive on Flickr lately. The goal is to create a better working environment on my side of the garage and enough additional storage space that we can park my wife's Jeep in the garage again.

This is a photograph from the second running of the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon ("The Flatline") was held at Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Saturday 14th September 2013 at 11:00. There was beautiful weather for the event which started and finished at St. Aloysius College near the Canal Banks area of the town just slightly west of the River Shannon. This event was professionally organised and the very flat course meant that many runners both seasoned and new to the scene achieved season or personal bests. Almost 1,000 participants successfully completed the event in the beautiful September sunshine. Everyone involved must be congratulated for the flawless running of the event. This event is sure to go from strength to strength over the coming years. The "Flatline" also included an option for a full marathon which was fully supported by the Marathon Club of Ireland and the East of Ireland Marathon Series. This allowed participants to run the Flatline twice for the qualifying marathon distance. About 80 people took part.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: Such is the popularity of the race this year that registration closed for the race in mid-August 2013. There were well over 1,000 participants who took to the start line.
Weather: The weather on the day was almost perfect for running. The runners were bathed in warm September sunshine for the duration of the race and into the early afternoon. In the sections of the race out towards Clonown and around the Bord na Mona areas there was a stiff breeze but nothing major.
Course: "The Flatline" ceratinly lived up to its name. It is as flat a course as one is likely to find. A garmin connect gps trace of the route is provided here [connect.garmin.com/activity/199678412] Geographically the course spends much of the race in County Roscommon with only the first and last kilometers actually in County Westmeath. This gives geographically inclined runners the novel opportunity to race in two Irish provinces in one race. The course had distance markers at every kilometre and mile along the way. There were official pacers provided by the race organisers.
Location Map: Start/finish area and registration etc on Google StreetView [goo.gl/maps/8qCes] - Ample parking was supplied with some over-flow car-parking options also available.
Refreshments: An Alkohol Frei bottle of Erdinger was provided to every finisher as they crossed the line. Light refreshments were served.

You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc.
If you would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?
Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
