Taos Pueblo is an amazing place. It is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the US. Although only minutes away from the town of Taos NM, it has incredible presence and connection with the land, and the unperturbed mountains.
This portrays a wonderful, mysterious alleyway I happened upon in the golden afternoon light. A barely visible turquoise blue door peeks through at the far end of the ancient, slanted and narrowing adobe walls - beckoning... waiting...
In all the years I've been fortunate enough to visit New Mexico, this is the first time I've visited the Pueblo - long overdue. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, we hope that it remains as it is today - with a strong connection to the past and future.
Thanks to Jaro who was our guide that day. I hope I can return soon.
(I now see that this is best viewed in a darkened room to see the subtleties in the shadows :)
Sometimes it is the subtitles in the environment (or our lives for that matter) that make the difference. A few clouds in the sky color for a few moments, as they hover over a mountain top. It too had changed color from a somewhat beige to an overall deep grey.
The temperature of the light at sunset is different from that of the day. Colors take on different hues and we quite literally, see things in a new light. Spending time in one area and watching the changes that occur as the light alters, makes for a unique experience. "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." I had to be quick, because I had just turned around – these two brave runners were pretty fast despite the slippery ground ;-) This shirt shone like a ray of light in pastel winter gray, a welcome splash of color for my favorite game with the camera when it gets dark – long exposure with camera movement is like painting for me :-)

Series »Winter's Bone«
Salmon River, Adirondacks, NY
There are several rivers in the Adirondacks named Salmon. This iteration comes out of Salmon Pond, quietly wandering its way through the lowlands of the Blue Mountain Wild Forest, where it intersected my wanderings in the greater Adirondack Park. Daylight was on the downward swing across the sky, the shadows already turning chilly. The river is reflective, spilling the warmer colors in the open meadow upstream, and the colder blues where the sun can’t penetrate the crowded forest, pressing ever in for water. For 30 years, my obsession in life was music. Music, in its patterns and structures, is redundancy, with nuance. So it is I can see my existence as compartments of repetition. Work, food, sleep, play, all in continuous performances…. some good, some bad, with nuances. Even photography doesn’t totally break that mold. I have seen this type of scene repeat in other locations, north of here in the Paul Smith’s area, south near Raquette Lake, in the lowlands of Pharoah and Lake George...each is similar: dark, smooth waters, essing through the forest of a glaciated plain. The differences are nuance, subtleties of geography, illusions of seasons. Today’s is in the warm light of a late winter afternoon. I often return. We are creatures of habit after all, and if I go back to the same places I’ve been before...forgive me for repeating myself.

Timeless Elegance: A Monochromatic Portrait of the Sunbird
Witness the timeless elegance and intricate details that transcend the boundaries of color.
With the absence of hues, the focus shifts to the sunbird's form, highlighting the delicate curves of its body and the graceful extension of its wings. Every line and contour becomes more pronounced, revealing the true essence of this magnificent creature. In this monochromatic realm, the sunbird's beauty takes on a new dimension, captivating our senses with its understated allure.
The contrast between light and shadow adds depth and drama to the composition, accentuating the intricate patterns of the sunbird's feathers. Each tiny barb and filament becomes a work of art, delicately etched by nature's hand. The monochrome palette amplifies the textures, transforming them into a tactile feast for the eyes.
As we immerse ourselves in this black and white Photograph, we are reminded of the power of simplicity. Stripped of vibrant colors, the sunbird's allure lies in its pure essence, showcasing the harmonious balance between light and darkness. In this stark monochrome realm, we discover the inherent beauty that transcends the limitations of perception.
Join me in this exploration of the sunbird's monochromatic world, where simplicity reigns supreme. The subtleties and nuances that define this enchanting creature. Marvel at the timeless elegance of the sunbird, as it stands as a testament to the enduring beauty found within the realm of black and white.
Through this photograph, I invite you to embrace the artistry of monochrome and celebrate the intricate details that often go unnoticed. Allow yourself to be captivated by the sunbird's subtle grace and be inspired by the timeless allure that can be found even in the absence of color.

Inclement weather sets the scene, the lovely little tree on the island is unfortunately no longer there, brought down by a storm some time ago.
This is one of my very first digital SLR landscape shots,a firm favourite that has been subtlety reworked from the original RAW file.

Sometimes proper Oddballing demands that you get your face close to the ground and raise your left ear. The dynamics of Oddball are complex and a lot to keep track of, but luckily Jasper has all the subtleties in his repertoire
The black frame does bring out the b/w subtleties of the work but maybe a grey frame so it doesn't clash with the artwork's darker tones?

Light was subtlety diffused with the last of the overnight mist a true autumn morning
I am fascinated by light and capturing it, from its mostly hidden subtleties to the large scale effect it has on bringing 3D structure to the world around us. This photo is an example of the latter.
“I am a dreamer. I know so little of real life that I just can’t help re-living such moments as these in my dreams, for such moments are something I have very rarely experienced. I am going to dream about you the whole night, the whole week, the whole year.”

MEMORY LOVES YOU – SOPHIE ZELMANI
In dappled sunlight I look across
the lane; the red bricks; window panes
the fences that are inbetween
the hedges; fledglings sing their songs
I feel at peace where I belong
deep in the countryside where time
stands still; where timeless rural scenes of mine
and all those folk who walked before
who trod this ground; this earthy core
of my existence; golden hours
the endless; frameless; bowls of flowers
valleys; fields and silent witnesses
sheep as quiet as ancient tombs
the coolness of the stone church floors
that balm my soul and heal my wounds
I never heard such silent sheep
but they are quiet because they sleep
in blessed peace where no-one shouts
no cars that roar; no roundabouts
the curving; winding country lanes
the turning seasons; weather vanes
the spinning; whirling winds of change
don't linger here; all stays the same
and I am fortunate to be here
to stand; to sit; to meditate
I hear a distant church bell calling
not yet for me; it's not my fate
the biggest, tallest daisies grow here
the fertile soil; the sweetest toil
let meadows; lush, green natural carpet
roll out around and down the hill
meadowsweet and warbling willows
hidden in the canopies
birds of all kinds make their homes here
their world above my head in trees
thick with foliage beneath sheltered skies
here lies the truth; no place for lies
I close my eyes and listen intently
the subtlety of nature's sounds
the heartbeat of the world contentedly
thrums soft rhythms beneath the clouds
I can feel the sweet vibrations
beneath my feet and warmly spread
through my veins and warm my bones
root me; save me; fill my head
with dreams of always living in this moment
one repetition I wouldn't mind
for Heaven exists in moments like this
brings hope to my heart; to my soul; divine.

Nearing midnight in Disko Bay in Greenland and the sun is low but will not set. The lighting effects on the icebergs can only be described as unique - from deep blues in the shadows , to pinks.
However, I liked the subtlety of the sun's effect on this huge iceberg - you can use the seabird centre bottom to get an idea of scale.

It's a beautiful area – full of beauty and subtlety. With one step, you go from darkness into a magical land. The light conjures contours and points in the image that I hadn't even noticed while taking the photograph.

I love the pastel shades of this rose in my garden...
It reminds me of Georgia O'Keeffe's rose paintings...

I did not slide it too much as there was already some surreal quality to this image. I enhanced it with some subtlety.
Poem is mine written on the spot for this.

"An ambivalent love song to the fading agricultural plains of centuries past, the Last Chance Module Array is a quiet complex for experiencing the subtlety of this site. A meditation on the High Plains region in Eastern Colorado in particular, the piece invites visitors to acknowledge their complex and often overlooked relationship to this place and to the environment, both built and 'natural,' positive and negative. Positioned to align with the horizon and celestial phenomena, it is also an unapologetic celebration of the openness of this land, with the sun rising and setting in the center of the main module structure during the summer and winter solstices." -- M12 Studio
We've been trying to catch this location in the "right mood" so to speak for some time. On this occasion we expected a more vibrant sunset and though that didn't happen I still like the subtlety of the colours and the way the cloud is almost an inverse of the shape of the hill.
Looking Close... on Friday! theme Round in Vertical Photo
It's back to bubble time! I particularly liked the subtlety of this bubble caught on some moss. It looks quite space agey, it’s also looks like it’s on life support, or perhaps it’s a new method for harvesting oxygen?
I tried out some new ideas for the theme but disappointment and a lack of time meant that I had to ditch the project ...for now.
Happy Looking Close... on Friday! 😊
The Humble Administrator's Garden (Chinese: 拙政园; pinyin: Zhuōzhèng yuán; Suzhou Wu: Wu Chinese: [tsoʔ tsen ɦyø]) is a Chinese garden in Suzhou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous of the gardens of Suzhou. The garden is located at 178 Northeast Street (东北街178号), Gusu District. At 78 mu (亩) (5.2 ha; 13 acres), it is the largest garden in Suzhou and is considered by some to be the finest garden in all of southern China.

The Classical Gardens of Suzhou (Chinese: 苏州园林; pinyin: Sūzhōu yuánlín; Suzhounese (Wugniu): sou-tseuyoe-lin) are a group of gardens in the city of Suzhou, in Jiangsu, China, which have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Spanning a period of almost one thousand years, from the Northern Song to the late Qing dynasties (11th-19th century), these gardens, most of them built by scholars, standardized many of the key features of classical Chinese garden design with constructed landscapes mimicking natural scenery of rocks, hills and rivers with strategically located pavilions and pagodas.
The elegant aesthetics and subtlety of these scholars' gardens and their delicate style and features are often imitated by various gardens in other parts of China, including the various Imperial Gardens, such as those in the Chengde Mountain Resort. According to UNESCO, the gardens of Suzhou "represent the development of Chinese landscape garden design over more than two thousand years," and they are the "most refined form" of garden art.
These landscape gardens flourished in the mid-Ming to early-Qing dynasties, resulting in as much as 200 private gardens. Today, there are 69 preserved gardens in Suzhou, and all of them are designated as protected "National Heritage Sites." In 1997 and 2000, eight of the finest gardens in Suzhou along with one in the nearby ancient town of Tongli were selected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site to represent the art of Suzhou-style classical gardens.
Famous Suzhou garden designers include Zhang Liang, Ji Cheng, Ge Yuliang, and Chen Congzhou.
Sometimes a photograph works because of its subtlety or what is excluded from the frame. For me, a great image involves a combination of strong content and excellent design :-)

The sea was incredibly turbulent when I made this long exposure image of the view looking towards Towan Head from the rocks at Little Fistral, which is essentially a short stretch of wave-cut platform beneath the Headland Hotel at Newquay. There was very little colour in the sky, but I quite liked the fact that all of the elements possessed a subtlety that meant no single aspect dominated the picture.
