This early morning, my friends and I trekked into the subzero temps to capture the first sunrise of 2014. It was the coldest weather that I've ever photographed in. We went to Cana Island in Door County to capture today's first light. The idea was to shoot the sunrise behind the lighthouse there. Although the sun never poked through the clouds and the sunrise wasn't nearly as brilliant as many I've captured before, I did manage to find some color in the sky, snow, ice, and water around me. Sometimes you just have to work a little bit harder to find what you're looking for!

Happy New Year! Here's to 2014.

The icy signature of record-breaking freezing temperatures last night. For this largely tropical region, it is a Big Deal.

While we return to our homes tonight through a snow storm bringing wind chills below 20 degrees, I find myself reminiscing about tropical sunsets through an abstract reflection obtained in another world.

Datong's coal mines per se are located much further, away from the city, mostly in the mountains that spread North and West. More than 2000 of them lay there, some as vast as a medium sized town, some so small that it would be impossible to spot them without the wagons rusting at their entrance. China's black gold, like oil in Texas, has attracted entrepreneurs of all calibers.

....To the degree that your passions are out of control.

A number of photographers I follow on Flickr have been posting some beautiful frozen bubble pictures, inspiring me to give it a try...

In trekking out in subzero wind chills for the sake of my 2015 installment of the 365 project, I found myself lacking much inspiration in the quickly dimming light. While the walk around the capital square is part of my usual route, normally the hustle and bustle of Madison takes a break and relaxes on Sundays. Today was quite different, as Madison was hosting it's annual Winter Festival; where they truck in loads of snow and pack it down on the square to create a winter wonderland. Of course, come Sunday night the workers who placed the snow must return the square to it's normal conditions (as snow pack isn't favorable for most cars).

Walking towards me was a gentleman who looked like he had a long day, and in fact I joked with him as he passed "you look like an undertaker." He chuckled and exclaimed "I'm so ready to be done with this, I'm digging my own grave!" Great sense of humor for such a tedious job, at the point I asked if I could take his picture. He asked me for what it was and just as quickly as I was about to answer, he said "sure, why not." Click, click and then he was off back to work. No names, just a fun exchange with a stranger for not only the 365 but also now included as a member of my (608)strangers

Get out and explore your city, you never know who you might find to include in the 100 strangers project. Sometimes more strange then others, but that is what makes it most fun!
