This 'QJ' class 2-10-2 No.3594 was actually in steam and used for providing steam to heat the workshops at Changan on the Shuangyashan Mines Railway, photographed on New Year's Day 2001. A visit the following year around the same time found this locomotive in active service on passenger trains, so it was very much alive and well!

Having had sub zero temperatures getting on for two weeks the snow finally arrived in Carlisle this afternoon. 66 183 is seen in the Up Departures Sidings having worked in from Millerhill Yard at lunchtime with freight 6M51. Ordinarily the loco would then work 6K27 to Crewe Basford Hall Yard but no traffic on this occasion and none for 6C18 the return working in the morning. Instead the loco was either going to remain at Kingmoor Yard to work 6S50 back to Millerhill on Friday morning or be dragged dead in train to Warrington Arpley on 6L35 for a fuel and service.
Sub-zero conditions with strong winds (and high water) as a polar vortex made it's way down the St. Lawrence Valley.
Minus 2 degrees C. yesterday.
These tough birds do not seem to be fazed by anything our weather can dish-out. Yesterday they were soaking wet in the rain.
The high temperature today was ~ -4F (-20C). Birds were very active and all switched to consuming a high-energy suet.
At the large size, you can see that my blind and house are reflected in the bird's eye.
Sunset over Sarasota Lake. Battling temperatures at -10 degrees, with a wind chill of -45, this was one of the hardest pictures i've ever taken! Right when i get out of my car a gust of wind slaps me in the face and the blowing snow made it even more difficult to keep the camera steady! Thank you for viewing and please like, comment, and follow me!!
Sub-zero temperatures on their own aren't enough to bring a railroad to its knees, as evidenced by this scene from north Topeka on the morning on January 15, 2024. At the time of this photo, it was -4°, and UP's LMC40 was still on its way out of town, like it does most every day.
Here, after the passing of the Track Inspector on his Hi-Rail truck, the conductor is on the ground at the Squirrel Switch to line 1629 onto Main 1 at CP Z068. This was all just minutes after the passing of two other eastbounds; a manifest out of the yard, and a stack from the GSR.
The show must go on!
THIS GUY. Ok I started working on this guy a month ago. I put him aside because I didn't like the way he was turning out (and the arms I used broke). After the new ones came in, I started working on him again and he turned out great. Thoughts?
In temperatures hovering below freezing, 37116 blasts past the site of Rushey Sidings on the Retford to Worksop line with 1Q64 09.06 Derby RTC to Neville Hill test train with 37057 on the rear. Monday 8th January 2018.
Well, i tried. Again, I'm a really big fan of MK, and I'm especially excited for MKX. Anyways, i tried to dry brush some ice colored paint onto his black gauntlets. Any suggestions on how I could improve ?
A frosty sub-zero day a few weeks ago up Palisades Creek in Swan Valley, Idaho. An ice dam changed the course of the creek to create this natural ice sculpture. My new tools from Adobe Lightroom helped me save this photo from oblivion. The shadow never leaves in mid winter up Palisades Creek so unless you have an overcast day, the valley always lives in harsh shadow. Adobe's gradient tools helped me color correct the deep shadow and the sunny areas separately.

A remake of my old Sub-Zero minifig based on his more updated appearance in the recent Mortal Kombat games.
Admit it: we all eventually just kept on doing this to our opponents when the computer was unbeatable.
Night time windchill temps in the sub zero teens has created some spectacular ice formations all throughout the valley. The details and intricacies are exquisite, and the way the ice has enveloped the greenery slowly is fascinating to me!
In extreme sub-zero conditions, ice encrusted Jixi Mining Bureau's 'SY' class 2-8-2 No.1058 trundles down the grade light engine from Jixi Xi China Rail exchange sidings for Dongcheng yard on 3rd January 2010. A local resident heads towards the bus stop for Chengzihe, walking past the outside WCs serving the basic dwellings, so typical of life in China, but systematically being swept away in favour of high-rise apartments in the cities.

A heavy cloud bank really scattered the sunrise light early on. Three of four decent-sized waves came in one after the other. They left a screen of mist in the sub-zero air.
FIGHT!
Just like the identical pallet-swapping ninjas of the classic Mortal Kombat series, these two custom BrickHeadz use the exact same construction.
The temperature difference from the top to the bottom of the felsenmeer (really a talus) can be 10 degrees. In the summer it's a cool trail to walk for a little relief.
