Part 2 of Studio Lighting Class-Strobes

i photographed his big brother's maternity & newborn almost exactly 2 years ago. couldn't ask for a sweeter, more down to earth family!

The essential question I aimed to answer was, “What makes someone inspirational?” The question was the most broad of my three different ideas. It allowed me to be creative with how I decided to answer. The way I attempted to respond to this question was by taking a portrait of a subject in a similar pose as someone who inspires them. I proceeded to ask them to tell me a simple background of their chosen person and why they are inspirational. I also considered asking the question, “How do people inspire others?” but was unsure how I could have answered this question. Conceptually and technically, my photos were much more successful than I originally had planned. Each clearly answers the essential question and gives the viewers insight into the subjects mind.

It was portrait night at camera club - I got the chance to play with some studio equipment. Well I say play... someone else set it all up, I just got to see the end result really!

This was a quick snapshot of the set-up. Don't ask me what's what because I don't know :o

A studio portrait of Carol Anne

One of several photos I took for my sister when her daughter was just a little toddler (maybe not so little, but anyway).

Lighting info:

Two Profoto Compact, one with umbrella on the background camera left (a bit too strong) and the other one in a medium softbox lighting the little one camera right.

I learned from www.studiolighting.net that even a newbie like me who's in a tight budget could improvise a cheap studio lighting set-up and still come up with beautiful results. Inspired by the new knwledge I acquired, I immediately bought a floor lamp , a 24 watts/ 6500K spiral flourescent bulb, an aluminum dish which I attached to the the bulb, a white translucent umbrella which I clamped to the body of the floor lamp and a car sun shade as a reflector. The light beneath the sofa is also a spiral flourescent bulb placed in a box with a sheet aluminum foil pasted in its inner wall.

These images are all about playing with translucency. The fruit has been placed on a piece of glass put between two tressles. A soft box is used to illuminate the fruit from below, with metering for the light, not the fruit.

I have had a lot of fun with these and will now try a few different scenarios.
