Shot for Active Assignment Weekly: White on Black
I really struggled with ideas this week, which kills me because shooting white or black backgrounds is usually achieved through flash photography, which is kind of my wheelhouse. What can you do, sometimes the creativity doesn’t flow. After several failed attempts at shooting anything in the house that was black or white I settled on my bedlamp which has this cool black metallic weave. Shooting it on white didn’t really look to cool so I opted to shoot it on black and add the white with specular highlights. Hope that counts.
WIT: I laughed when I read Pres Sanders’ description of getting the lighting right his egg shot. If I ever figure out a way to do lighting without a whole lot of trial and error I’ll let you know… I did just about every arrangement I could think of, propping up couch cushions and pillows to use as flags for fancy 2 and 3 flash lighting setups, trying to get some nice sharp rim lighting on the latticework; nothing worked. Finally, mostly out of desperation, I just pulled the beauty dish off my light stand and plopped it directly on top of the lamp shooting down. Exactly what I was looking for. Pulled the shadows down and the highlights up in Lightroom and cleaned up in PS, finishing with a high pass filter to really pull up those highlights.
Finally, someone agreed to sit for me! This is my good friend Kara (mom to 3 kids under four), who agreed to be my subject for my current portrait assignment. Not sure if this is the frame I'll turn in, but it's a possibility.
Shot with one Alien Bee 800, 3/4 front @ 1/4 power with medium softbox, and a silver refelctor on the left.

As a single parent everything falls on your shoulders, your household looks up to you to magically take care of it...I know you will GET IT DONE....you are always looked at as such a STRONG WOMAN....yet in my heart I truly would love to fade into the background, pour out how and what I honestly feel. I'd sometimes like to just be a "poof'" in the wind as the other halves have done, but no the love of a MOTHER- yeah we're there thru thick and thin because no matter how you feel, it's all the LOVE they know...
If just once I could be transparent, invisible, fade into the black, just once to truly cry out...maybe things would change...then of course with my life----ALWAYS NOT....

I hardly ever do product shots and consider myself a novice in said field. Had a short workshop with a fellow shooter in the studio a while back though, and sort of like how this came out.
