Fantastic studio session with Vanessa. We will be doing a location shoot next tuesday.
I know its said every time I work with her, but she remains a natural, and we work so well together.
These shots were supposed to be our "warm up" shots before heading outside on location, but her session was cut short and the location shooting was postponed until next week.
Every time I shoot her, she looks like a totally different person. Fantastic.

Shot for Active Assignment Weekly: Back to the Grind
I tried to come up with something original for this project but I just couldn’t realize what I pictured in my head onto the computer screen. Despite my best attempts to have a Nespresso capsule floating towards the machine in magical stream of light, it just wasn’t working. So I ditched the capsule all together and just went with this carnival-quality magic light.
WIT: The main shot was done with a beauty dish camera left and I held a reflector on camera right to fill in some shadows. Then I took out the tray and shoved a flash in there, gelled purple, to shoot up through the slot while a capsule was propped up above with toothpicks. Edit the two photos together in Photoshop and tried to add some light beams for effect. Ended up editing the capsule back out.

I like, as you can see in my stream, a broad variety of types of photography. Last weekend I had the opportunity to work with studiolights and my friend as a model. This picture is one of the results of that shoot. The softboxes produced a smooth and elegant result.

This 1940's Arri Baby Spot light is one of the most collectible of the vintage film lights. the workmanship of this light is second to none. Typical of all the Arri Fresnels, this light has a spot/flood option. There is a knob on the back face that allows you to move the bulb closer or further from the glass fresnel element. This is in perfect working order.
The light mounts on a stand or sits on a surface. It had the dual option so in theatres, it could be used as uplighting. Enjoy this photographic study of one very rare Arri Baby Spot.
I just recently bought a few Pocket Wizards & have been trying them out in all sorts of ways, also listening the the StudioLighting.net podcast Interview with Mr. Hobby (aka Strobist) & hearing them talk about the Lacrosse picture made me think about trying the slap zoom technique which I used here. All of this was done in camera, exposure was dropped a tad bit & red was brought up a tid bit in ACR but thats it, the rest is in-camera. I zoomed from 17mm to 85mm to create this effect. Light: Large clamshell setup with the Elinchrom ELC 1000 through a large beauty dish from the front-top-side, which creates the metallic contrast in her face. One Elinchrom ELC 500 through a small horizontal strip light from the low-front, to fill in some shadows a little bit. Elinchrom ELB 400 with Action Head through a dish with grid from the top-back, as global rim light. One ELC 500 through a background shaper on the background. I measured the light with the Sekonic L-758DR.
Postprocessing: Some local adjustment curves, some local cloning.

For my Art156 class Studio Lighting. In this assignment we did not use the strobe lights, instead we used other, improvised lighting by items one would have in a garage.
The subject is a heavy glass container I bought for $2 at Fry's. It is a yellow color. Inside I placed a lit candle. I shined an LED flashlight at it from the left front. This flashlight has a very blue colored light. Also, a multi-cell incandescent flashlight was used to light the background.
