About 1000 students gathered on the front lawn of Sydney University today to protest against the Federal government's "Voluntary Student Unions" Bill. At the moment membership is compulsory for all students - the fees they pay at enrolment provide for services like student housing, childcare, advocacy/representation, as well as the many societies that make university cultural life accessible for all. The Howard Government is trying to pass legislation to make membership voluntary, which would essentially mean the end of student control of these services, passing it into the hands of private commercial interests.
