This booklet uses poetry and illustration to explore the artist’s relationship to her genealogy – both in terms of national and familial ancestry – through an examination of how her personal identity was formed through the adoption and internalisation of her homeland’s historical/cultural narratives. Watercolour and storybook aesthetics communicate the nostalgia of residual childhood memories and experiences, while the aesthetic of the diptych expresses how religion shaped and shapes her relationships to the people and landscapes she identifies with.

This was one of the coolest works I've had a student do. We were doing Day of the Dead projects last week, and I had the students create a piece inspired by the Day of the Dead folk art style we saw, but that incorporated their own culture. This is a piece that Chelsea, a student of Vietnamese heritage, created - I love how she incorporated words from her native language, and the way she used the rice farmer skeleton....
