Stuart Gullstrand and his recycled art masks at the Hands On Childrens Museum's "Looking at Art Gallery" in Olympia, Washington
This is the grave of Confederate General James Ewell Brown Stuart. Jeb Stuart was known for his ability to recon the enemy and offered cavalry support during battles. He was know for wearing a red-lined gray cape, the yellow waist sash of a regular cavalry officer, with his hat cocked to the side with an ostrich plume, and a red flower in his lapel. He was was so trusted by General Robert E. Lee that he called Stuart his Eyes and Ears. On May 11, 1864, General Stuart's led a cavalry charge against Union Troops at Yellow Tavern about 6-miles north of Richmond. As the Union Troops retreated past General Stuart, a Union Private named John Huff shot General Stuart with his 44-caliber pistol. General Stuart was removed from the Battlefield and died at 7:38 p.m. on May 12, 1864. The 31 years old General was buried here in Hollywood Cemetery.
About 1935, John bought Stuart Island Traders on the BC coast. He was Postmaster and Justice of the Peace for the island. He traded with the natives of the coastal area and was known for his fairness. He operated it until the mid-1950's when he retired to Burnaby and remarried. He lived there with his 2nd wife, Elsie, until his death in 1961.
