The Stuart area was originally settled circa 1850 by Quakers from Indiana and Ohio. The area was selected for its location along the top of a ridge. The town was named after Capt. Charles Stuart, who came from Vermont as an agent for a company that sold scales. After returning from the Civil War, he purchased land that became the townsite. The town boomed upon the arrival of the Rock Island railroad, and Stuart was an early division point for the railroad, ensuring the town's future success.
Located at the mouth of Bute Inlet, named for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1762 to 1763.
