Martha Temple, Lady Penyston
Born 1595 Died 1620
Parents: Sir Thomas Temple and Hester Sandys
The dual colour marble monument to Martha Lady Penyston, who was the fourth daughter of Sir Thomas Temple and the wife of Sir Thomas Penyston, baronet.
She died the 13th January 1620 aged 25.
She is displayed in her funeral shrouds with her infant daughter, Hester, who was borna nd died in 1612, displayed at her feet.
Martha and Thomas lived at Bruce Castle in Tottenham, leased from the 3rd Earl of Dorset, in whose retinue her husband had been placed. Martha became the earls mistress in 1617 and remained so until she died, even attending "his great supper to two or three of the frenchman who came over with the Ambasador."
She caused a great scandal in may 1619 by spending all summer at Tunbridge Wells and was feted at Knole on 24 July.
She gave the Earl two daughters who were raised buy Anne Clifford, Countess of Dorset.
She died of Smallpox January 1620
Her monument was erected not by her husband but her father.

Shut in this sepulchre lyes the ashes of faire Penyston, who lov'd by the most worthy of hir time, remov'd to heav'n, so to fraw up hir lovers eyes to the divine beawtie of that deitie, wherein she may love all that love hir, and not sinne.

The book was published by the University of Queensland Press and launched by Lyndon Terracini, Chief Executive of Major Brisbane Festivals and Artistic Director of the Brisbane Festival.
It was launched at Avid Reader in West End, Brisbane, Australia on 10 September 2008.
