"Allesandersplatz", Haus der Statistik, Nähe Alexanderplatz, Berlin

The Haus der Statistik is a building complex in the Berlin district Mitte in Otto-Braun-Straße 70-72 (between 1966 and 1995 Hans-Beimler-Straße), south of Karl-Marx-Allee. It was founded in 1968-1970 as the headquarters of the State Central Administration for Statistics of the GDR. After German reunification, German authorities used the buildings, which have been empty since 2008.

Until 2017, the building was owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, which wanted to demolish it and sell the site. However, the Berlin Senate was able to acquire the building complex as part of the capital city financing agreement. Together with several other initiatives and administrations, the complex will be completely renovated and will be used for a wide range of purposes.

Yueh Hai Ching Temple is a Chinese temple in Singapore.

The current structure of this shrine dates back to 1850 and was substantially renovated in 1895. Since then, it has undergone several restorations.

The temple exemplifies a Taoist temple in traditional Chinese architecture.

The roofs of the temple feature highly unusual ornaments, consisting of intricate arrangements of one- and two-story mini-structures and human figurines. These elements are arranged to depict clusters of buildings within a Chinese town.

In this temple, not only is the ridge densely adorned with dragons and miniature models of dwellings, but the copings, gable ends, and hips are also embellished with various structures, including pagodas, sheds, dwellings, and niches. Human figurines are displayed throughout, depicting scenes from Chinese operas that illustrate the courageous and meritorious deeds of gods and ancient heroes from Chinese legend.

Wanted by Roger de Hauteville, the dome of Catania was made by the Benedictine Breton abbot Ansger1 of Sainte Euphémie2 on the remains of the ancient Achilles thermal baths from Roman times.

Because of these catastrophes, the cathedral, in numerous reconstructions and repairs, has amalgamated all the architectural styles that have been superimposed over the centuries and recent restorations have shown considerable portions of its original structures.

Today's facade is the most majestic work of the baroque by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini who built it in 1736. The portal, in solid wood, was commissioned by Bishop Pietro Galletti in 1738 and on which were sculpted, in addition to the arms of princes and Aragonese sovereigns, the stories of Saint Agatha and the same church.

The Ouse Valley Viaduct (or the Balcombe Viaduct) carries the London-Brighton Railway Line over the River Ouse in Sussex. It is located to the north of Haywards Heath and to the south of Balcombe. Known for its ornate design, the structure has been described as "probably the most elegant viaduct in Britain."

By May 1983, the viaduct had been recognised as a Grade II listed structure.

Jvari Monastery is one of the most iconic in Georgia. This ancient temple dates back to the 6th century AD. It was built at the dawn of the adoption and spread of Christianity in Georgia. The name of the church is translated from Georgian as “the cross” and has its own history. According to the legend, the cross of St. Nino, one of the most revered saints who converted Georgia to Christianity, is kept here. After some time, a temple was built on the site of the holy cross, which later became the basis of the present Jvari.

The Jvari temple is located nearby the ancient capital of Georgia, Mtskheta, on the top of a high mountain, from where picturesque views of the neighborhood open, at the intersection of stormy waters of the Aragvi and Kura rivers. The temple attracts thousands of tourists because of its architecture, location and historical value. Exterior and interior decorations of the temple are made in simple, and we can say quite austere forms. Unlike most Orthodox churches, Jvari is beautiful with its simplicity, rigor and clarity of lines. According to the structure, the temple is classified as serial, or tetraconch. Inside the temple right in the center under the dome on a stone pedestal, stands the impressive wooden cross, decorated with inscriptions and carvings. The exterior facades of the temple are decorated with simple, and at the same time expressive bas-reliefs.

To the top of the mountain where the temple stands, lead two ways: a new asphalt road for cars, and a path through which people used to climb up to the sanctuary from time immemorial. The trail begins at the highway. Climbing up along it until about the middle, you can come across a spring with holy water which is believed to appear thanks to the prayers of St. Nino. This water is considered to be curative and miraculous. The temple of Jvari went through a long and difficult journey of one and a half thousand year’s length along with the Georgian people, experienced hardships and difficulties, becoming a symbol of faith for Georgia.

These sorts of driftwood/branch structures always make me uneasy when I find them out wandering. I don't know why, perhaps it is because I think the maker is observing me. Focus is a bit softer than I would like, but overall, I think a good composition and the tones work for me.

The Northern Pacific Office Building is a three-story historic office building in Tacoma, Washington that served as the headquarters of the Northern Pacific Railway's Tacoma division. Built in 1888, the brick, stucco, stone and cast iron structure stands on a high bluff overlooking the Commencement Bay harbor and extensive railroad switching yards that fan out across the tide flats below at the mouth of the Puyallup River where it flows into Puget Sound.

Nature is MIRACULOUS!

A Dahlia, looks like it is on fire, each petal like a ’licking’ flame.

Brought back from the Continent, they sadly did not ’survive’ the trip very well.

Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, perennial plants native to Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. There are at least 36 species of dahlia.

Dahlia hybrids are commonly grown as garden plants.

The Aztecs gathered and cultivated the dahlia for food, ceremonies, as well as decorative purposes, and the long woody stem of one variety was used for small pipes.

The dahlia is named after Swedish 18th-century botanist Anders Dahl.

I must admit, I do not like the 'fragrance' of Dahlias .

A part of American history and local folklore meet at Singer Castle on Dark Island, located on the St. Lawrence River. Singer Castle is the only remaining/existing castle on our river to be completed, fully furnished and resided in during the heyday of the great builders and industrials in New York. Calumet and Castle Rest (Pullman) were both completed and lived in. (And both were prior to Towers.) The Castle remained in the possession of the original owners, the Bourne family, from its construction in 1905 until the mid 1960’s. Frederick Bourne was the fifth President of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, which is where the name “Singer Castle” came from. When the Bourne family summered there, it was called “The Towers” which comes from the inspiration that Ernest Flagg, the architect whom designed this structure, had after reading the book Woodstock by Sir Walter Scott.

* Since reading Ian McEwan’s 2007 novel “ On Chesil Beach “ I have wanted to see this strange geological structure .

Chesil is not your typical British beach lined with stripy deckchairs and pastel painted beach-huts but wild, rugged and at the mercy of Mother Nature. John Fowles, captures the landscape of Chesil perfectly in his quote: ..... “It is above all an elemental place, made of sea, shingle and sky, its dominant sound always that of waves on moving stone”

The beach runs for a length of 18 miles from West Bay to the Isle of Portland and in places is up to 50 ft high and 660 ft wide. Behind the beach is the Fleet, a shallow tidal lagoon. The lagoon is home to the mute swan colony at Abbotsbury, the only place in the world where you can walk through a nesting colony of mute swans.

The pebbles on Chesil Beach are graded in size from potato-sized near Portland to pea-sized at Bridport and are made up of mainly flint and chert from the Cretaceous and Jurassic rocks, along with Bunter pebbles from Budleigh Salterton. It is believed that smugglers landing on the beach at night could could judge their position along the coast simply by picking up a handful of shingle.

Both the beach and the Swannery are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
