This structure was built in 1965 for a Sizzler Restaurant. It has been several others after that. The last restaurant was a place called Eans Burge Restaurant After that closed a catering establishment opened for a brief time. But the City of Farmer Branch would not permit the catering business to operate so it was forced to cease operations. At the time the photo was taken the building had been vacant for at least three years. Thanks to Sheri Stevenson and Structured Commerical for the Information. Port House Antwerp, Belgium by Zaha Hadid Architects.

The Port House combines a new beam-shaped structure and a former fire brigade building into a new headquarter building for the Port Authority. The project is strategically located between city and harbour, with magnificent views over both the centre and the port from behind the articulate glass walls – some transparent, others reflective – in reference to the Antwerp diamond trade.

In early September 2012 Zaha Hadid gave the official order to begin construction work on Port House, the new headquarters for Antwerp Port Authority on the Kattendijk dock. The new Antwerp Port Authority headquarters will house approximately 500 staff in a single new location that comprises both a former fire station and a new extension. Together, these two entities form an impressive new landmark as the headquarters of the Antwerp Port Authority, overlooking both the city and the harbour. Staff and visitors arrive in the central atrium from where public counters, offices and meeting rooms in the existing building are directly accessible. The offices, meeting rooms, auditorium and panoramic restaurant in the new extension are accessible via panoramic lifts just off the central courtyard. Two underground levels of car and bicycle parking, the restoration and renovation of the existing building and the exterior landscaping of the site also form an integral part of the design. The new extension is positioned asymmetrically over the central courtyard, allowing light to enter the heart of the building. Leaving the existing structure untouched, it is supported by two sculpted concrete pillars that house stairs and lifts as well as a series of carefully placed steel columns that land in the courtyard. The new volume is enclosed by articulated surfaces of triangular glass panels which are slightly rotated with respect to one another to achieve ever-changing reflections that enhance its diamond shaped geometry. From the new building visitors will have a truly impressive view over the city as well as the port, so further strengthening the dialogue between the people of Antwerp and their port.

Macau Protestant Chapel, more commonly known as Morrison Chapel, (Camoes Square, near Camoes Gardens) has a history of approximately two-hundred years, although the present structure was not built until 1922.

The earliest mention of a Protestant “chapel” no doubt referred to a room at the offices of the British East India Company, (E.I.C.) The traders of the E.I.C. were actively engaged in the China trade from the late eighteenth century until 1834, when the Company’s charter was not renewed. The E.I.C. charter required that chaplains be sent out from England to minister to the spiritual needs of the Company employees; these chaplains had to meet the approval of either the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Bishop of London. The Company not only provided chaplains; they required that employees regularly attend divine services! The charter also required that all baptisms, marriages and funerals be recorded and sent to London at regular intervals; these were sent from Macau as early as 1792.

In 1821, when the land on which the present-day Chapel stands was purchased, it contained a tenement which the Company had been renting to house their printing press. The burial ground, now the Old Protestant Cemetery, was acquired at the same time. The E.I.C. had long been trying to purchase land for a burial ground, since burial for Protestants was not allowed within Macau’s city walls. And the sale of land to foreigners was forbidden by Portuguese law. But the death of Mary Morrison, wife of Dr. Robert Morrison, missionary and translator employed by the E.I.C., was the catalyst which brought about the transfer to the British of land for both the Chapel and the Old Protestant Cemetery. How this transfer suddenly took place, after years of failure on the part of the Company, is a bit of a mystery.

Thanks to obscure records and destruction by white ants, it is impossible to know exactly what buildings have stood on the present Chapel site. There may have been a mortuary chapel for a time (perhaps a part of the original tenement); but it soon became a chapel for general purposes, evidenced by the marriage there in 1833 of Dr. Colledge and Caroline Shillaber.

After 1834, when the E.I.C. lost its trade monopoly, responsibility for the administration of the Chapel and cemetery was taken by the British government; in 1870 this responsibility was transferred by Deed of Transfer to Trustees consisting of at least three Consuls or other high ranking representatives of at least two nations having Protestant members living in Macau. This board of trustees has usually had members from the United Kingdom, the United States of America, the Netherlands and Germany. Although the Diocese of Victoria, Hong Kong, (and more recently the Province of the Sheng Kung Hui – the Anglican Church of HK and Macau) have faithfully supported the Chapel, it is owned and administered by the trustees. When the renovated building was dedicated in 1922, it was dedicated as a House of God, not as an Anglican church.

The use of the Chapel and its state of repair have had their ups and downs over the years. A period of prosperity was experienced with the residence of Australian clergyman, the Reverend E. J. Barnett from 1898-1910. But by 1921, the Chapel required complete rebuilding, except for the original foundation. This renovation was promoted by Bishop Duppuy, who preached the sermon at the dedication ceremony which was recorded in The Hong Kong Daily Press of January 9, 1922. This newspaper account mentions Bishop Duppuy’s recalling two conditions for the construction of the Chapel: It had to be placed behind a high wall, hence not visible from the street; and it could have no church bell.

Skegness had a 1,843 foot (562 m) long pier which was opened on Whit Monday 1881 at a cost of £20,840 and was at the time the fourth longest in England. It was a T-shaped pier with a saloon/concert hall at the pier head. Steamboat trips ran from the pier to The Wash and Hunstanton in Norfolk from 1882 until 1910. In 1919, it was damaged by a drifting ship, the schooner Europa, and it took twenty years to raise the money to fully repair it. During the Second World War the pier was closed and parts of the decking was removed as part of anti-invasion policies and didn't reopen until 1948 following repairs. The north east corner of the pierhead suffered damage during the 1953 East Coast Floods and the pier entrance was flooded but the main structure survived. In the early 1970s the pier entrance archway was demolished despite it being classed as Grade II listed building and at the same time the pierhead theatre was enlarged from a seating capacity of 700 to one thousand.

The structure that the cobblestones are making is pretty awesome.

An interesting tangle of pipes, wires, walkways, ladders, and supporting structure at a sawmill. (252a)

Neighbors noticed the two car detached garage at 105 Davis Rd to be going good so they made the call to the Seymour Volunteers. When the tones dropped an automatic mutual aid was requested from the Town of Oxford for a ladder truck as Seymour's was out of service. The fire crews arrived to a fully involved garage fire which was spreading to the exposed section of the 1.5 story wood dwelling which was in close proximity. Fire had extended into the first floor as well as the attic space but quick work from the responders kept the fire from engulfing the dwelling as well. Searchs of the home were negative but the owner was still unaccounted for. As marshals dug throught the rubble which was once the garage in hopes of determining the origin of the fire they made the discovery of human remains amongst the ashes and charred wood. The body which was badly burned was taken by the medical examiners office so an autopsy might reveal the identity of the deceased.

This was a fun garden structure to create. It also has an amazing view overlooking a private golf course in Toronto. The fabric ceiling is retractable and provides some protection from the rain and sun. Endless detail to this structure. This garden structure was crafted in the Toronto area.

From photographer's notes - "Today I was fortunate enough to have a tour of the Monrovia Station construction site. The pictures I sent out just recently were taken a block away from the station with a Telephoto lens. Obviously these pictures show much more. The Station is basically done except for finishing touches. Right next to the station just feet away is a neat parking structure which will park over 300 cars. As you can see they are about to install an elevator. We were at this location on the 13th of this month. The overhead support poles were up but no cross arms in place. Today the cross arms are up and Messenger wire has been strung. Overhead construction seems to go incredibly fast."
