And the girder is gently lifted, assuming you can say "gently" when referring to a girder that is 145 feet long, weighing 128,000 pounds.

Ironworkers attach crossframes at the right in this image. Shoring towers support the girders on the left.

Crews worked around-the-clock during a temporary GCRTA track-outage in order to set steel over the rapid transit tracks - hence the need for lighting!

First responders from across the country were in Virginia Beach for a massive structural collapse training exercise hosted by the Virginia Beach Fire Department and Virginia Task Force 2. The annual School was held at the sprawling complex of crawl spaces and staged disaster zones representing different scenarios – things first responders have seen and experienced first-hand. This course gives urban search and rescue teams a chance to practice their skills. More than 160 people took part in the hands-on training lasting for 8 days with students coming from as far as San Francisco, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware.

Quartzite in the Precambrian of Wisconsin, USA.

The Baraboo Ranges of southern Wisconsin are dominated by a hard, erosion-resistant Precambrian metamorphic unit called the Baraboo Quartzite. These rocks were originally marine sandstones and have been subjected to metamorphism and structural folding. Original sedimentary structures are preserved, such as cross-bedding and ripple marks. Baraboo Quartzites vary in color from pinkish to dark reddish to grayish. During metamorphism, quartz overgrowths formed over the original quartz sand grains. Long-term, modern weathering can result in original sand grains being released.

This unit has economic significance - it has been quarried historically and in modern times. The quartzite is broken down into gravel-sized pieces for use as railroad ballast and erosion-control rip-rap.

Stratigraphy: Baraboo Quartzite, upper Paleoproterozoic, ~1.7 Ga

Locality: Tumbled Rocks Trail, northwestern margin of Devil's Lake, Devil's Lake State Park, northern part of the South Range of the Baraboo Ranges, southeast of the town of Baraboo, eastern Sauk County, southern Wisconsin, USA (43° 25' 34.34" North, 89° 44' 06.56" West)

The two cranes lift the girder slowly, eventually lifting it up above the knuckle girders already in place.

A closer look at the connections between structural glass members. I like the resemblance to a spider holding all pieces together.

20 vessel supports ranging in length from 30" to 84" were manufactured for an oil refinery in Texas. The structural supports will be attached to existing vessels to assist in supporting the nearby pipes and piping system. The supports were fabricated from carbon steel and coated with a hot-dipped galvanize finish to prevent corrosion.

At least three phases of deformation here. Structural geology is awesome!

The main bridge girders extend out over the future overlook-approximately the location of the old Broadway Mills Building.

The crane picks up the girder and moves it until it is clear of the timber base where it was resting.

Here you can see the inside knuckle girders, Pier 5 on the left and Pier 6 on the right. The closure girders, that will connect the two piers will span OVER the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks, so we had to request a rail outage for this work.

This pavilion was designed for the SESAM 2009 workshop in Valle di Canne, Rome. Each workshop group was given a metal U-Structure (4.8m square), in which to explore the theme of Evolution. The concept of our project was to explore man's physical, mental and spiritual evolution. Visitors are led on a journey through the pavilion where they discover a variety of spaces articulated to heighten awareness of particular faculties. Touch — crawling through a dark and narrow passage, our concern is with the texture of the surfaces immediate to us. Vision — we stand, where we are presented with a view of the park in the distance. We become more aware of the world around us. Self-awareness — we discover a generous bright lit room, where a small mirror attracts our attention. Upon seeing ourselves we become aware of our own physical limitations. We are objects in space. Spirituality — The mirror also directs us to a seat in an adjoining space. Sitting here, in a chimney to the sky, we reflect on our experience.

Dearadh an pailliún don cheardlann SESAM 2009 i Valle di Canne, an Róimh. Tugadh U-Struchtúr miotal (4.8 méadar cearnóg) do gach grúpa cheardlanna chun téama na hEabhlóide a fhiosrú. Bá chioncheap ár dtionscadal ná eabhlóid fisiciúl, meabhrach agus spioradálta an duine a fhiosrú. Treoraitear na cuairteoirí ar turas tríd an pailliún, áit a aimsíonn siad sraith do spásanna atá cúrtha in iúil chun tuiscint céadfaí áirithe a mhéadú. Tadhall — ag dul ar na ceithre boinn trí phasáiste cúng agus dorcha, an rud is tabhachtaí dar linn ná uigeacht na ndromchlaí is cóngaraí dúinn.Radharc — Seasaimid san áit a bhfuil radharc den pháirc i bhfad uainn. éirímid muid níos fiosraí faoi an domhain mórthimpeall orainn. Féin-feasacht — aimsímid seomra mór, flaithiúil, geal, áit a bhfuil tarraingt ag scáthán beag orainn. Agus ár íomhá ós ár gcomhair, bíonn eolas againn ar ár dteorainneacha fisiciúila féin. Is ábhair i spás muid. Spioradáltacht — treoraíonn an scáthán muid chomh maith chuig suíochán i spás in aice lámha. In ár suí anseo, in aimléir go dtí an spéir, déanaimid machnamh ar ár eispéireas.

Siamo oggetti nello spazio.

Structural repairs complete.

Cactus can be so much more challenging to photograph than "regular" plants; they lack the branches and leaves that allow creative patterns and shapes that other plants have. However, this cactus was pretending to be part of the greenhouse window frame, and I thought that was quite fun.
