— Zun Lee

Zun adds...

“Robert Capa famously said "if your pictures aren't good enough you aren't close enough." Many interpret this quote as referring to physical proximity. However, the closeness Capa spoke about also encompasses emotional closeness, or empathy toward a subject or subject matter. Caring about a subject (whilst not necessarily sympathizing) makes a visible difference in how we photograph, I believe.”

Tolerating corruption as a way of life can end up poisoning us, so beware! Riots and protests are really the way, as right thoughts and acts. It is not about serving self, it is about serving Jesus.

GROUNDED IN ECOLOGY

Balmori Associates is an international urban and landscape design firm founded by Diana Balmori. Balmori Associates is recognized across the globe for its creative interfacing of landscape and architecture and expanding the boundaries between nature and structure. As distinguished leaders in the field of urban design and the design of innovative public spaces Balmori Associates gives form to the processes of sustainability, producing ‘green infrastructures’ while revealing the constructed and natural operations of a site.

Balmori Associates strives to achieve the highest standards of environmental responsibility by rooting our work in two basic sustainable design principles: Low-Impact and Regenerative . Low-Impact to reduce potential detrimental effects of local and project-related construction, development or consumption and to minimize environmental impacts, while sustaining the health and resilience of ecological systems. Regenerative Design to integrate building systems within landscape for resource renewal and the restoration of constructed landscape.

Our diverse portfolio includes executed projects at all scales, and award-winning competitions and has garnered numerous awards for design excellence; and sustainability is a central concern in all our work. In 1998, Balmori Associates’ Master Plan won the international competition for the waterfront development of the Abandoibarra district of Bilbao, Spain. We provided design leadership on the greenroof at Silvercup Studios in Queens, New York, the largest scientifically monitored green roof in the United States. In the fall of 2012 Korean Prime Minister and several ministries moved from Seoul to Sejong, South Korea new multifunctional administrative city, a zero-waste urban plan designed by Balmori Associates. LES JARDINS DE MÉTIS | REFORD GARDENS

Visit : www.refordgardens.com/

From Wikipedia:

Elsie Stephen Meighen - born January 22, 1872, Perth, Ontario - and Robert Wilson Reford - born in 1867, Montreal - got married on June 12, 1894.

Elsie Reford was a pioneer of Canadian horticulture, creating one of the largest private gardens in Canada on her estate, Estevan Lodge in eastern Québec. Located in Grand-Métis on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, her gardens have been open to the public since 1962 and operate under the name Les Jardins de Métis and Reford Gardens.

Born January 22, 1872 at Perth, Ontario, Elsie Reford was the eldest of three children born to Robert Meighen and Elsie Stephen. Coming from modest backgrounds themselves, Elsie’s parents ensured that their children received a good education. After being educated in Montreal, she was sent to finishing school in Dresden and Paris, returning to Montreal fluent in both German and French, and ready to take her place in society.

She married Robert Wilson Reford on June 12, 1894. She gave birth to two sons, Bruce in 1895 and Eric in 1900. Robert and Elsie Reford were, by many accounts, an ideal couple. In 1902, they built a house on Drummond Street in Montreal. They both loved the outdoors and they spend several weeks a year in a log cabin they built at Lac Caribou, south of Rimouski. In the autumn they hunted for caribou, deer, and ducks. They returned in winter to ski and snowshoe. Elsie Reford also liked to ride. She had learned as a girl and spent many hours riding on the slopes of Mount Royal. And of course, there was salmon-fishing – a sport at which she excelled.

In her day, she was known for her civic, social, and political activism. She was engaged in philanthropic activities, particularly for the Montreal Maternity Hospital and she was also the moving force behind the creation of the Women’s Canadian Club of Montreal, the first women club in Canada. She believed it important that the women become involved in debates over the great issues of the day, « something beyond the local gossip of the hour ». Her acquaintance with Lord Grey, the Governor-General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, led to her involvement in organizing, in 1908, Québec City’s tercentennial celebrations. The event was one of many to which she devoted herself in building bridges with French-Canadian community.

During the First World War, she joined her two sons in England and did volunteer work at the War Office, translating documents from German into English. After the war, she was active in the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Montreal Council of Social Agencies, and the National Association of Conservative Women.

In 1925 at the age of 53 years, Elsie Reford was operated for appendicitis and during her convalescence, her doctor counselled against fishing, fearing that she did not have the strength to return to the river.”Why not take up gardening?” he said, thinking this a more suitable pastime for a convalescent woman of a certain age. That is why she began laying out the gardens and supervising their construction. The gardens would take ten years to build, and would extend over more than twenty acres.

Elsie Reford had to overcome many difficulties in bringing her garden to life. First among them were the allergies that sometimes left her bedridden for days on end. The second obstacle was the property itself. Estevan was first and foremost a fishing lodge. The site was chosen because of its proximity to a salmon river and its dramatic views – not for the quality of the soil.

To counter-act nature’s deficiencies, she created soil for each of the plants she had selected, bringing peat and sand from nearby farms. This exchange was fortuitous to the local farmers, suffering through the Great Depression. Then, as now, the gardens provided much-needed work to an area with high unemployment. Elsie Reford’s genius as a gardener was born of the knowledge she developed of the needs of plants. Over the course of her long life, she became an expert plantsman. By the end of her life, Elsie Reford was able to counsel other gardeners, writing in the journals of the Royal Horticultural Society and the North American Lily Society. Elsie Reford was not a landscape architect and had no training of any kind as a garden designer. While she collected and appreciated art, she claimed no talents as an artist.

Elsie Stephen Reford died at her Drummond Street home on November 8, 1967 in her ninety-sixth year.

In 1995, the Reford Gardens ("Jardins de Métis") in Grand-Métis were designated a National Historic Site of Canada, as being an excellent Canadian example of the English-inspired garden.(Wikipedia)

Created by Elsie Reford between 1926 and 1958, these gardens are an inspired example of the English art of the garden. Woven into a natural setting, a series of gardens display perennials, trees and shrubs. A crab-apple orchard, a rock garden, and the Long Walk are also the legacy of this dedicated horticulturist. A microclimate favours the growth of species found nowhere else in Canada, while the stream and winding paths add to the charm. Elsie Reford’s beloved blue poppies and lilies still bloom and contribute, with other exotic and indigenous plants, to the harmony of the site.

From now on I will host "Lot No.402_".

The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.

That is the number when it was put up for auction.

No sign was written on the work.

So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.

However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.

A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.

I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Rain water from the Blue Mountains, trickling down under the Lennox Bridge.

After a massive cropping, I used Lightroom to desat every colour except blue, took the image to Photoshopt, blured and desat half a layer and voala! Stoked. Just stoked.

This is the breakthrough of photographic success ive been striving for: an idea and perspective ive always looked past.

Underneath the Southbank Center in London.

On Monday, May 18, 2015, Sunshine Village Ski Resort capped off a successful season with the 87th Annual Slush Cup party. This event saw adventurous skiers and snowboarders fly down the mountain in outlandish costumes as they strive to make it across pool of icy, cold slush water. This is actually a judged competition, with those brave enough to attempt this annual feat were up to receive prestigious accolades including best belly flop, best face plant, and biggest splash, to name a few.

During a day's layover in Honolulu-Waikîkî, I went to see the sights from the rim of Diamond Head Crater. The park itself is the least inviting of any I've seen in Hawai'i. Generally they're really very wonderful. This one consists basically of a small grassy area near the 'facilities' and for the rest public access is only to a relatively narrow walkway up to the crater's edge. The very large natural area of the crater bottom is quite out-of-bounds for the 'general public'. When I asked a guard why this is the case, he said that the crowds leave too much litter to clear away. Anyway, not being able to look at the plants and birds was a disappointment to me here.

The view from the rim, though, was fabulous, as this photo demonstrates. In the background Honolulu and Waikîkî, in the foreground Waikîkî's spacious Kapi'olani Park. It's not only the city scape that's different compared to - say - a century ago. This bright green area in the nineteenth century was basically a huge swamp made over into a park later. It was named for Esther Julia Kapi'olani Napelapuakak'e (1834-1899), Queen Consort of King David Kalâkaua (1836-1891). The name 'Julia' was pronounced in Hawaiian as 'Kulia', and that fits in nicely with the Queen's motto: 'Kulia I Ka Nuu' (Strive for the highest). That's certainly what I was doing on my climb to the crater's edge... as many with me. And I hope our 747 this morning does more than merely strive!

Say to wisdom:

“You are my sister”; and may you call understanding itself “Kinswoman,” Proverbs 7:4. I find it interesting that the Good Book refers to wisdom as a woman. I tell you true, I strive to be that woman. Oh, I found these pretty little flowers while hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains.

This one is shot in one of the most busy market in mumbai. It was difficult to click there because everytime i tried to focus someone or the else will come in between but still i wanted to get these shots since a long time. So here they are and i managed to get a few shots of these hardworking people.

With stammering lips and insufficient sound

I strive and struggle to deliver right

That music of my nature, day and night

With dream and thought and feeling interwound

And only answering all the senses round

With octaves of a mystic depth and height

Which step out grandly to the infinite

From the dark edges of the sensual ground.

This song of soul I struggle to outbear

Through portals of the sense, sublime and whole,

And utter all myself into the air:

But if I did it, - as the thunder - roll

Breaks its own cloud, my flesh would perish there,

Before that dread apocalypse of soul.

This little flower, in it's bright yellow dress, was photographed using the simplest of cameras carrying a very simple lens. The flower was growing at the foot of Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach. Yesss.. a mountain of trash that had been filled in, covered with soil and planted in grass. I'm not sure why they did this but they were probably filling a need.. people go jogging around, over and across it now. Friend meets friend on Mt. Trashmore.. an idea that seems to have worked. Yes, it has built in vents.. I checked the obvious. I went there just to see it and take a few pictures.. the highest point in town.

I felt some sadness at this kind of need .. but then again.. it has worked for them.. I'll say this though.. most times when I take pictures I'm trying to express a sadness or a joy inside.. not good at words, I strive to express through my camera the feelings inside.. oh wait.. I'd guess we all do that.. a loneliness impossible to express in any other way.. or a joy that cannot be contained. I like your work.. some of it, I even love.. God Bless you all and your pictorial expressions of deep feelings. What a wonderful hobby, passion and/or obsession we all have!

Thanks for looking in! - Have a great day and weekend ahead!

"The Star" by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (1924) at the Cincinnati Art Museum

and beauty is a sphere in which we are allowed to stay children throughout life.

Del Rey, CA

Happy New Year to everyone from Duncan! In introducing him to the group, I'm trying to move a bit out of my own box (I almost never "pose" him), while telling you something about him. I was striving for something of a "low key" shot, because (although he's ALWAYS up for anything exciting that might happen), he really is fairly low-key (well, for a Border collie at least). He's not much of a "party animal", as this shot tries to convey; he loves all people and is cordial to other dogs but doesn't seek them out for play. He is viewed as a "star" when I take him to work (a regular occurrence), though his favorite thing (apart from hikes) is to go "outside" (reflected in his glasses). He's got a great "stay" (as you can guess from the EXIF; this was taken handheld). Anyway, we're looking forward to participating in "52 Weeks" this year. Any and all criticism is gratefully received, as one of my resolutions this year is to work on my skills as a dog photographer.

I'm a firm believer in spending New Year's Day doing the things you enjoy the most. For me this involves photography and going for a hike with Duncan (which is where I'm headed now!).
