Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

Earlier this summer at an LGBTQ pride event, I overheard a nearby conversation wherein a post-operative transgender individual (post-op TG), categorized by some folks as “trans-sexual” (TS), stated that crossdressers (CD’s) predominated the gender association of which she and I were both members . . . OUCH !
For the past decade, I have considered myself a non-op TG (not striving for sexual reassignment surgery – SRS), so I took special interest when hearing the implication that I, and my peers in the gender association, were merely crossdressers.
Clearly, a TS literally and figuratively has more “skin in the game” with regards to their gender crossing, especially when SRS – sometimes known as “bottom surgery”, facial feminization surgery, HRT (hormone replacement therapy), electrolysis hair removal and/or other medical procedures, such a breast removal for trans-men, are involved. So, it does not take too much imagination to see why a TS would set a high standard for defining who might be admitted into the sorority / fraternity of the transgender.
However, for such a small community, perhaps 0.2% (1 in 500) of the U.S. population, there is quite a bit of diversity amongst transgender individuals. The world got a peek at that TG diversity when we learned that Caitlyn Jenner did not submit to sexual reassignment surgery in order to fulfill her gender identity needs.
Listed below are some varied paths to gender identity I have observed within the TG community:
•TS – transsexual: has surgically crossed the sex divide as well as the crossed the gender divide;
•Post-op TG – same as transsexual, see above,
•Pre-op TG – awaiting SRS, usually on hormones and usually “full time” within identified gender,
•Non-op TG – Gender identification differs from that of sex at birth; not seeking SRS; may or may not be on hormones; may or may not be full-time in their identified gender,
•TV / CD – transvestite / crossdresser: identifies their gender the same as their sex at birth; at times presents themselves in a gender other than their sex at birth; not initially considered transgender, but may be in a “questioning” phase (the Q in LGBTQ) where they later determine that they are, in fact, transgender.
Based on these definitions, which are by no means set in stone, the primary distinguishing characteristic between a part-time Non-op TG and a CD is gender self-identification, a characteristic that is not readily apparent when you stand both individuals side-by-side for a photograph.
I have wondered if a “score card” methodology might aid in transgender self-evaluation, somewhat along the lines of responses to a certain number of statements suggesting one is transgender. So here it goes:
You think you may be transgender when . . .
1. Your sleep dreams place you in a gender other than your sex at birth,
2. Life seems flat when “dressed in drab”, presenting in the gender of your birth,
3. Most of your social life takes place in the gender other than your sex at birth,
4. You wish you had more opportunities to get out in your preferred gender,
5. Your sex partner identifies you and lusts for you as your transgender self,
6. People who know you encourage you to go full-time in the gender other than your sex at birth,
7. When presenting in the gender the same as your sex at birth, you feel like you have this whole other wonderful person inside you that is being denied the opportunity to live life to the fullest,
8. You have been “outed” at work or school and in your family as being transgender,
9. Even when not dressed in the gender of your choosing, your sensibilities and outlook culturally align with those of that gender other than your sex at birth,
10. If you could be a TS at the snap of a finger with no unintended consequences (such as surgical infection, complications from anesthesia, blood clots, increased cancer risk, hormonal imbalance, etc.) you would do it in a heartbeat,
11. (Bonus Question) – Your adult daughter says you talk, walk and look more femme than her mother!
Scoring:
5 to 10: Most definitely transgender,
3 to 4 : Most likely transgender,
1 to 2 : Likely in the questioning phase,
0 : Unlikely transgender at this moment.
So how did I score? I can truthfully answer in the affirmative to all of the statements, including the bonus question! So, do you think I am a TG or a CD???

The rough working of stone quarried on the high peaks of the 'Langdale Pikes', deep in the Lake District - just under Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland and to the western side of the Pennines. Final polishing of the mine's rough stone occurred further down in sites such as Ehenside Tarn.
The open mines of Langdale account for 27 percent of British neolithic polished tools. It's axes and tools were not flint creations, rather they came from an igneous rock that had been refined and further hardened by metamorphic activity.
Production at the site was maintained for around 1000 years with finished axes found all over Britain and Ireland with clusters aside the Grimes Graves region - potentially a result of mobile negotiators. Neolithic societies seem therefore to have had strategies of goodwill and social mediation.
The axes seem to strive for perfection, to transcend the original material and transform into objects on a par with those observed in the living world - symmetry, clean lines, fine surfaces...
A polished axe blade will be stronger, so makes sense, but on these large and time consuming tools, every side and surface has the same shine! The desire for a perfect surface seems to have often been to bring to attention the beauty within the stone, and this seems to have pushed people to highest levels of general polishing and essential form. With the stones often coming from specific far away locations, it's as if ideas of great distances could be held inside a tool of great universality and utility. Many of the best examples show few signs of use, and maybe they were perfect symbols of far off friendship rather than hierarchical symbols of fractures of power and individual wealth. A focal object for vivid conversation regarding links ; contacts and assurances to help visualise the obvious networks of trade and movement that, even today, armature the neolithic record.

Yet a 2001 World Resources Indicator report which shows that 2 million of the most wretchedly poor people of the world live in 51 countries, also indicates that almost half of these people live in India and China alone!!!
Trip down to Steetley tonight for what turned out to be a wonderful sunset. Used the Big Stopper to get the movement of the clouds. The incoming tide became silky smooth. Some background information:
Saumur is a historic town in the department of Maine-et-Loire in western France. The commune that is located between the Loire and Thouet rivers, has almost 27,000 residents. Saumur is situated between the cities of Angers and Tours, about 40 km to the southeast of Angers and about 70 km to the southwest of Tours. It is surrounded by vineyards, which produce some of France’s finest wines.
Early settlement of the region goes back many thousands of years. The Dolmen de Bagneux to the south of the town is 23 meters long and built from 15 large slabs of local sandstones, weighing over 500 tons. It is the largest dolmen in France.
Saumur was founded in the 10th century, following the construction of a castle in the 9th century. After Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou, had ended the rule of the Counts of Blois in this area in 1026, the settlement evolved into an important trade centre of the whole region. As an integral part of Anjou, Saumur became French crown land under King Philip II of France in 1204. In the 16th century, King Henry III of France passed the town on to Henry of Navarre, who later became King Henry IV of France.
In the same century, Saumur evolved into the spiritual heartland of the Huguenots. In 1593, even a Protestant academy was founded, where the Calvinist doctrine of Amyraldism was taught. A number of renowned theologians disseminated this doctrine for almost one century, but in 1685, the academy was dissolved due to the Edict of Fontainebleau that was issued by the French King Louis XIV. After the academy had to close its gates, a large portion of the residents left the town, which hence lost its economic base.
However, Saumur recovered quickly from this economic setback and subsequently became an equestrian centre. In 1783, a military cavalry school was founded. Prior to the French Revolution it also became the capital of the Sénéchaussée de Saumur, a bailiwick, which existed until 1793. In that year, the town was the location of the Battle of Saumur during the War in the Vendée.
In 1940, during World War II and the Battle of France, the town was the site of another Battle of Saumur, where old quarter and south bank of the Loire were defended by the teenage cadets of the cavalry school. In 1944, it became the target of the first Tallboy and the fourth Azon bombing raids by Allied planes to stop the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich during its approach to the front. However, only the railway bridge was bombed, as the German tanks were expected to use the railway to cross the Loire. After the war, Saumur was awarded the medal "Croix de Guerre" with palm for its resistance and display of French patriotism in the Battle of France.
Today, Saumur is still home to the French military riding academy "École Nationale d'Équitation" as well as to the "Cadre Noir", a cavalry corps at this academy. The "Cadre Noir" is renowned for its annual horse shows. As already mentioned before, the town is also surrounded by wine industry. Hundreds of domaines utilise the tunnels under Saumur as cellars, while producing white, red, rosé and sparkling wines. The annual "Grandes Tablées du Saumur-Champigny" is an annual event held in early August with over 1 km of tables set up in the town where people can taste local foods and wine.
The Château de Saumur was originally constructed in the 10th century by Theobald I, Count of Blois, as a fortified stronghold against Norman attacks. It overlooks the confluence of the Loire and the Thouet rivers. In 1026 it came into the hands of Fulk Nerra, count of Anjou, who bequeathed it to his Plantagenet heirs. Following its destruction in 1067, the castle was rebuilt by Henry II of England in the later 12th century.
In the early part of the 13th century, Philip II of France made Saumur part of his royal domain. In 1356, King John II of France released the castle to his second son Louis I, Count of Anjou. Louis I was striving to convert it into a residence that was absolutely comparable to the magnificant residences of his brothers King Karl V of France and John, Duke of Berry. The page for September in the "Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" depicts the château as it looked in 1410, with much more architectural details like chimneys, ornamented gables and likewise ornamented dormers.
In the following decades, the castle changed hands several times until 1589 when the Protestant King Henry IV of France and Navarre gave the castle to Philippe Duplessis-Mornay, the noble governor of Saumur. In 1621 the castle was converted into an army barracks. Nearly two centuries later it was converted again, but this time into a state prison under Napoleon Bonaparte.
In the first part of the 20th century, the city of Saumur acquired the castle and began a restoration program to house the museum of the decorative arts. In line with the Saumur area's equestrian tradition and its famous "Cadre Noir", the castle also serves as a Museum of the Horse. The castle has a dungeon and watchtower, and furthermore houses the Musée de la Figurine-Jouet, a collection of very old toys and figurines of soldiers, Kings of France, and clowns.
The Château de Saumur has been listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture since 1862. Since 2000, it also belongs to the UNESCO Word Heritage Site "The Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes" with its many breathtaking châteaux. Altogether there are more than 400 of them in the Loire region.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

誰にも気づかれない作品。肩書がなくとも静かに語りかける作品。
僕はこれから様々な形で、多くの皆様に提供できるよう努めてゆきます。

For the final round of the competition, I've decided to return to my artistic roots by re-envisioning my Second Life artwork, the Shui Mo series, as haute couture. Always an artist at heart, I've painted this flowery ensemble in my ink brush style, which can be seen in the hair, collar, and skirt, all layered to give an ink-like fluidity. I tried to utilize negative and positive spaces to delineate the various components within this ensemble.
My artwork has always focused on natural themes, and this is no exception. The skirt is a flower mirroring the lotus flowers inside my art installations, and this motif continues from head to toe. Throughout the competition, I've strived to learn and improve as a model by learning from my peers, and this finale is my way of showcasing myself as an artist as well.

Here's another six image panorama of Jubilee Creek in the Knysna forest.
Many people who know me also know that I often spend more than a few hours editing a single photo. This panorama was no exception. My camera might be able to capture all the details in the highlights and shadows in a scene like this, but I do have to tweak all the photos if I want my final image to look as realistic as possible. This is my basic workflow...
1. I open all the RAW files and make some basic adjustments. Then I save 2 copies (as TIFF files), one copy exposed for the highlights and the other for the shadows. Then I blend each of those pairs together using luminosity masks.
2. Next I stitch the blended photos together into one panorama using PTGui or Photoshop's Automerge feature (whichever does a better job). Then I save the resulting pano as a 16-bit TIFF file.
3. I open the stitched image in Photoshop and start off by cropping it to create the strongest possible composition.
4. Then I'll balance the overall exposure (if necessary) using gradient masks and the "blend-if" tool, and I'll also add some midtone contrast and tweak the white balance.
5. Next I might adjust specific colours which still don't look quite right. The red tones are often overrepresented in a forest photo, so I usually have to tone those down quite a bit. I also try to remove any blue and cyan tones from the sky that are reflected off the leaves.
6. Then I will adjust the black and white points and tweak the contrast until everything looks as close as possible to reality. Then I save my photo as a 16-bit TIFF file.
All those steps are easy to follow when you know how to do them. I've had lots of practice over the years, so I could probably perform them in my sleep. I wouldn't need more than about 20 minutes to complete those simple tasks. So why do some of my photos take several hours to edit? Because the final step is always the most important step...
7. I get up and walk away from my computer and won't return for at least 5 minutes. This gives my eyes some time to readjust to the reality of the world around me. When I return to my computer I ask myself one simple question; What DON'T I like about this photo? It might be a colour that appears a bit oversaturated (usually the greens or yellows), or it could be a small twig that catches my eye too often and becomes a distraction. I'll try to fix as many of those problems as possible, before getting up and walking away from my computer again for another 5 minutes. I will repeat this process of self-critique and small adjustments until I wouldn't change another single thing in my photo. Sometimes I'll only be 100% happy the next morning.
So that's why (in case you were wondering) it often takes me many hours to edit a single photo. :)
I think as photographers we all strive to take a picture which is "different" however, when the sunrise and geology come together conveniently, it's best to just follow the rules and go along with nature.
I got up this morning, not really expecting much as the skies were quite clear, but having checked out the tide I knew there would be some interesting rocks out at Hauxley. On the long drive up, I passed under a large cloud so made a mental note to shoot in that direction.
In the end, the cloud lit up nicely as the sun rose, providing some lovely orange and pink tones, and the geology, as always, provided some great lead in lines.

Tonalism is a type of art which uses a limited palette of colors, shown here today as black, gray, white and yellow. It strives to suggest an overall meaning in the wide swathes of color. Figures in tonal paintings are primarily set against landscapes. The lighter colors on my body symbolize purity while the shock of black shows the strength of birds in flight.
As a tonal painting, I represent the stork. The word aptly means "kindness" in Hebrew. Despite the legend that storks deliver babies, we are not always welcomed. Many places have tried to drive out my species, so all of us are struggling for our survival.
As the stork, I circle above the roofs of country villages looking for the perfect place to nest. As I fly west, I see telephone poles rise up to meet me, metal baskets adorning their tops. These are the perfect shapes in which to create my nest. When my young are born, I will cradle them in my wide, black-tipped wings, encircling them in my love and protection. The next time you see a stork, if you have the good fortune, please think of me fondly.
I shot this from the sidewalk. It's on Parliament Hill, east of the East Block, and it stands out alone against the sky, a memorial to the War of 1812, which Canada won. (We know we won because we're still here, not part of the US. Heh.) I don't recall seeing it the last time I was in Ottawa. I like it.

I reached, the only standing fort out of thirty five built earlier, The Daravar Fort. On the eastern flank of this massive brick-built fort stands a beautiful and petit marble mosque. Erected on an artificial platform the design of this mosque reminds the visitor of the great jamia mosque of Delhi.
Passing through the mosque, I walked towards the fort and entered through a huge wooden spiked gate. Every portion of the fort held a mystery inside. I could see so many frames longing to be captured. The massive brick structure seemed to be striving for survival. The remains were calmly resting as if it has been ages they are like this. The more I moved further, I was being pushed into a state of sweet solitude. I was enjoying the experience to the utmost. The aroma of tranquility prevailed all over and the dominant seemed weaker. The fear of all the powerful started fading away. In the absence of colors, light and shade played a talismanic role. The amazing sciagraphy, due to the different levels in the typology and the changing angle of the rays of light, played magical feats and created shadows which spoke a different language every other hour. Shadows have always accompanied me; always been a companion to me in this journey where I love carrying this crowd of loneliness around me.
Soon the sun started to set down. The light was getting darker. And once again, I had to bid farewell to my companion and move on…for another journey!

I have this silly dream (currently working on it) to visit every lighthouse in the west coast of the USA. :)
Anyway, this tunnel is on the way to Point Bonita Lighthouse--located in the entrance of the San Francisco Bay, which it was an adventure to find. Thank goodness for GPS navigation systems. :-)
