マークザッカーバーグ氏の批判に、アップルは耳を傾けるだろうか。
僕にはそう思えない。アップルヴィジョンプロに夢を見せられた僕には。
メタのマークザッカーバーグ氏は、有名なポッドキャストに出演し、アップルはアイフォン以来革新的な製品を発売せず、売り上げも落ちていると批判したようだ。
アップル発祥のポッドキャストに現れ、アップルを批判すると言うのは軽いジョークに思えるが、真剣に訴えたんだろうと僕は思う。
なぜなら、今の彼はARグラスという武器を手にしているからだ。
おそらく、さまざまな関係機関や優秀なスタッフが彼を支え、それなりの目標を達成したんだろうが、パワーブック５４０cから使い続けてきた僕のような古いアップルファンからしてみれば、まだ物作りのアイデンティを彼からはまったく感じない。
これは他の、現在世界を制覇しているIT企業らも含む。
メタ、アマゾン、テスラ。マイクロソフト。グーグル。
社名が並ぶだけで、このテキストを読まれている方は名前と顔をすでに浮かべているはずだ。
僕は以前、スティーブ・ジョブズはアーティストではないと書いた。
彼は、現世界に散らばったイメージを紡ぎ合わせ、それを膨らます。そして未来へリンクさせる。それが得意だっただけだ。
実際に創作していたのはジョナサンアイブだ。少数ながらも僕のような意見を持っている方もいるだろう。
しかし、先述したIT関連の面々が、トランプ氏に再び権力が戻るとなった途端に会社の方針を覆す様子を見ていると、僕は一言、どうしても意見したいのだ。
彼らが作ったARグラスや車などには、肝心な観念が欠けている。思想という重い言葉や、軽めのアイデンティティと言い換えてもいい。
確かに、ティムクック氏やアップルの現在のスタッフらは、発売前の商品に関して口を滑らせることが多くなった。
僕は、以前から書いているように音楽が大好きだ。
外界を断ち、アーティストらがスタジオにこもって、怒りや憎しみ、喜びや悲しみを一心不乱になって一音に吹き込む。何かを託すと言ってもいい。
そして、完成したアルバムを発表し、どんな思いを込めて制作したのかを語る。（僕が好きなプリンスはほとんど語らなかったので、完成された作品を理解する必要があった）
アルバムが完成し、発表するまで、彼らはひとことも語らない。
僕の胸を震わせたのは、そんなアーティストらだった。
僕の中に淡く灯っているアップルの革新性は、いまでも消えていない。
それは昨年、大失敗だと批判されたアップルヴィジョンプロでさえも消すことはできない。むしろ、アイフォン以上の強烈な光を放っている。
ただの斬新な電化製品ではなく、細かな電気部品の向こうに観念や思想を感じるからだ。
残念ながら、メタのARグラスやテスラの車に、僕がその観念や思想を感じることは今後もないだろう。
長々と書いてきたが、結論は以下の記事だ。

ティムクック氏は個人的にトランプ氏へ献金をするが、アップル社だけは他社と同じようには献金していない。
アップルは、トランプ氏になびかなかったのだ。
アップル社の観念や思想とは、具体的に何かと訊かれたら、僕はこう答える。
アップルとは、自分自身を信じる人間が集まっているグループだ。
たぶん、天国のスティーブ・ジョブズは、僕がクソ真面目に書いたテキストを、鼻で笑っていることだろう。
トランプ氏に媚びない会社。
それがAppleさ。:)

Will Apple listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s criticism?
I don’t think so—especially not for someone like me who was captivated by the dream of Apple Vision Pro.
Mark Zuckerberg of Meta appeared on a popular podcast and criticized Apple, claiming they haven’t released an innovative product since the iPhone and that their sales have been declining.
While criticizing Apple on a podcast originating from Apple itself may sound like a light joke, I think he was quite serious about it. After all, he now wields the weapon of AR glasses.
Supported by various institutions and a talented team, he may have achieved some notable goals. Yet, as an old Apple fan who’s been using products since the PowerBook 540c, I can’t feel any sense of craftsmanship identity from him.
This critique extends to other leading tech companies of our time as well: Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.
Simply listing these company names likely brings their logos and the faces of their leaders to mind for those reading this.
I once wrote that Steve Jobs wasn’t an artist.
He was skilled at weaving together scattered images from our current world, expanding them, and linking them to the future. That was his specialty.
The one who actually created was Jonathan Ive. There are probably others like me who share this minority opinion.
However, seeing how the IT leaders mentioned earlier change their company policies at the mere prospect of Trump regaining power, I can’t help but voice my opinion:
The AR glasses, cars, and other products they create lack a crucial concept. Whether you call it a profound ideology or a lighter term like identity, it’s missing.
True, Tim Cook and the current Apple team have become more prone to letting slip details about unreleased products.
As I’ve often written, I love music.
When artists isolate themselves from the world, locking themselves in studios to pour their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow wholeheartedly into a single note, they entrust something to their work.
Once they finish an album and release it, they share what they felt while creating it. (The artist I admire, Prince, rarely explained his works, so I had to interpret his completed pieces on my own.)
Until the album is complete and released, these artists say nothing.
The ones who move me most are those kinds of artists.
The faint light of Apple’s innovation within me hasn’t been extinguished.
Not even last year’s Apple Vision Pro, criticized as a major failure, could extinguish it. On the contrary, it radiates an even stronger light than the iPhone.
This isn’t just a novel electronic device—it conveys a sense of ideology or thought beyond its intricate electronic components.
Unfortunately, I doubt I’ll ever feel that same sense of ideology or thought from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.
I’ve written at length, but here’s my conclusion:

At first glance, it might seem like Tim Cook, like other IT companies, has sold his soul. But that’s not the case.
While Tim Cook personally donates to Trump, Apple as a company has refrained from doing the same as other companies.
Apple didn’t bow to Trump.
If someone were to ask me what Apple’s ideology or thought is, I would answer:
Apple is a group of people who believe in themselves.
Steve Jobs is probably laughing at this overly serious piece I’ve written from somewhere up in heaven.
A company that doesn’t kowtow to Trump—that’s Apple for you. :)

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

Middle class India is currently in a celebratory mood. Word has it India is to be the next economic super power in the world. Yet a 2001 World Resources Indicator report which shows that 2 million of the most wretchedly poor people of the world live in 51 countries, also indicates that almost half of these people live in India and China alone!!!
The flat ones fly first: gracefully, with no regrets and leaving no trace. The crooked and heavy ones go the same way.
Yet, there are rare, special stones - the ones you strive to keep.
This overdose prevention site off Crack Alley at 58 West Hastings St. is operated by the Vancouver Overdose Prevention Society, a not-for-profit organization that oversees hundreds of consumptions daily.
This mural was painted by residents of the Downtown Eastside, protesting the city’s 2016 plan for a housing development at 58 W Hastings which would include only a small fraction of social housing units. Months later, following extensive protest by the community and pressure from the Tent City occupying the vacant lot, Mayor Gregor Robertson committed to 100% social housing in the new development.
This mural represents the community’s call to action for ending homelessness. It reminds us that “homelessness is place-based marginalization . . . the visible reminder of what are otherwise hidden hierarchical social mechanisms of oppression”.
Homelessness is a social problem not an individual one and social workers must challenge the structural violence that strives to annihilate and exclude homeless people from occupying unconventional public space.
58 East Hasting site is one of 10 serving the Downtown Eastside (DTES). The sites offer a safe space for users to inject illicit drugs.
Staffed by volunteers trained in administering naloxone (Narcan) and CPR the site offers take-home fentanyl test strips so drug users can check their drugs for contamination at home.
The society also advocates for more sanctioned safe injection sites and a better government response to the overdose crisis.
The society began as a tent designated for safe consumption and overdose prevention, and was one of the initial community-led responses to the opioid crisis in British Columbia.
There is likely no area in Canada that has been studied and experimented upon more widely than Vancouver‟s notorious Downtown Eastside.
Long an area inhabited by low-income residents, it is now widely known as home to drug users and a myriad of drug dealers; as the community of last refuge for the mentally ill; as a ghetto filled with less than substandard housing; as a dangerous but accepting refuge for the homeless; as the nexus of crime for Greater Vancouver; as the danger-filled workplace for marginalized prostitutes; and as the destination of last resort for society‟s discards.
DTES is also a government initiated and sponsored ghetto due to the continuous addition of social housing that has built a community of customers with no cash, ripe for exploration by the drug and prostitute trade - IMO.
I thought this article by Vancouver Sun columnist Ian Mulgrew sums up the sad state of affairs in Canada's and in particular, Vancouver’s horrible human tragedy associated with illicit drug use. Mr. Mulgrew report extensively on the DTES.

Four years after the authorities declared opioid deaths a public health emergency in B.C., the crisis rolls along like a Monty Python plague skit: Bring out your dead!
While there are daily briefings about COVID-19, which has killed fewer than 200 people in B.C., overdoses that have killed more than 700 so far this year receive little more than a monthly mortality update.
The number of drug deaths in each health authority is at or near the highest on record, without a cure, vaccine or solution in sight.
Instead of truly confronting the crisis, governments seem to be continually finding reasons to stall and shy away from discussing what is needed.
There is little evidence our political leaders want to talk about the issue beyond wringing their hands and mouthing anodyne concern.
The B.C. government won’t even provide the costs associated with the more than 30,000 people weaned off illegal drugs and now on Big Pharma substitutes.
“As this matter is before the courts (because users have launched a class-action lawsuit) it is not appropriate for us to share any information that is not publicly available at this time,” said Tracey Robertson, senior public affairs officer.
“This includes the costing associated with Methadone, Methadose and Metadol-D treatment. That said, we are able to provide you with the number of patients on Methadone (15,459), Methadose (12,026), and Metadol-D (3,589), as of April 2020.”
Believe it or not, it was 15 years ago that B.C.’s public health officers demanded the government decriminalize drug offences.
In a strident, progressive paper, they said it was time to address the harmful effects of the criminal prohibition against substances such as heroin and (at the time) marijuana.
They emphasized that anti-drug laws were based on racism and cultural biases, not evidence of harm, and the prohibition was causing far more damage to health and to society.
Titled “A Public Health Approach To Drug Control in Canada”, that 38-page paper recommended reform of federal and provincial laws and international agreements that deal with illegal drugs, development of national public health strategies to manage all psychoactive drugs, including alcohol and prescription drugs, improved monitoring, and more education.
Governments ignored it, and the echoes that followed over the years.
By 2019, even before her fame, Dr. Bonnie Henry was still trying to get that 2005 message heard.
In May, federal Minister of Health Patty Hajdu was asked to introduce a nationwide exemption for drug possession so no one would have to fear arrest and jail, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, even the nation’s chiefs of police — who fought drug reform to protect their budgets — have joined the bandwagon, saying we should decriminalize drug possession.
The chiefs say it would improve the health and safety outcomes for drug users while reducing property crime, repeat offences and the demand for drugs in communities.
Really? After all these years of filling our jails with drug users while gangs prospered and proliferated, the cops have finally figured that out?
Heck, even Premier John Horgan, who recently sounded like he didn’t have a clue about addiction, is apparently all for decriminalization.
It’s about time.
Banning opiates, cocaine and other substances has proven to be as stupid as trying to ban alcohol.
Our drug laws are an abject failure. Still, decriminalization is not the answer to the opioid crisis any more than it was for marijuana.
It’s a halfway house of pain. Which is why we need a discussion.
Decriminalization allows the user to consume without risk of arrest, but does nothing to address the illegal black market, with its tainted products, violence and indiscriminate sales to kids.
Criminal drug laws protect traffickers from taxation, regulation and quality control. They maintain artificially high prices for drugs that cost pennies, and they produce an underground economy where disputes get settled not in court, but with guns.
There are better ways to control drug use.
It’s time to adopt a new legal regime to regulate drugs — their potency, retail sales, warning labels, age limits and other restrictions such as prescriptions.
Decriminalization won’t do that. Legalization will.
We need an integrated strategy of prevention, research, education and social programs to address poverty and the homelessness that has far too many people sleeping in parks.
We have to start discussing that aid package and dealing with addiction as seriously as we have attacked the coronavirus.
Legalization is not a panacea. It does not end drug use or violence.
But it will stop people with a medical issue being turned into criminals, and help us reduce the overdose deaths, the black market and the violence.
The 2005 anti-drug strategy called for a national dialogue, and Dr. Richard Mathias, of the University of B.C. faculty of medicine, emphasized: “We have to find a different paradigm here. The paradigm we have is killing Canadians.”
It didn’t happen.
Today, more than ever are dying. That 15 years have passed isn’t a joke, it’s an indictment.

Here's another six image panorama of Jubilee Creek in the Knysna forest.
Many people who know me also know that I often spend more than a few hours editing a single photo. This panorama was no exception. My camera might be able to capture all the details in the highlights and shadows in a scene like this, but I do have to tweak all the photos if I want my final image to look as realistic as possible. This is my basic workflow...
1. I open all the RAW files and make some basic adjustments. Then I save 2 copies (as TIFF files), one copy exposed for the highlights and the other for the shadows. Then I blend each of those pairs together using luminosity masks.
2. Next I stitch the blended photos together into one panorama using PTGui or Photoshop's Automerge feature (whichever does a better job). Then I save the resulting pano as a 16-bit TIFF file.
3. I open the stitched image in Photoshop and start off by cropping it to create the strongest possible composition.
4. Then I'll balance the overall exposure (if necessary) using gradient masks and the "blend-if" tool, and I'll also add some midtone contrast and tweak the white balance.
5. Next I might adjust specific colours which still don't look quite right. The red tones are often overrepresented in a forest photo, so I usually have to tone those down quite a bit. I also try to remove any blue and cyan tones from the sky that are reflected off the leaves.
6. Then I will adjust the black and white points and tweak the contrast until everything looks as close as possible to reality. Then I save my photo as a 16-bit TIFF file.
All those steps are easy to follow when you know how to do them. I've had lots of practice over the years, so I could probably perform them in my sleep. I wouldn't need more than about 20 minutes to complete those simple tasks. So why do some of my photos take several hours to edit? Because the final step is always the most important step...
7. I get up and walk away from my computer and won't return for at least 5 minutes. This gives my eyes some time to readjust to the reality of the world around me. When I return to my computer I ask myself one simple question; What DON'T I like about this photo? It might be a colour that appears a bit oversaturated (usually the greens or yellows), or it could be a small twig that catches my eye too often and becomes a distraction. I'll try to fix as many of those problems as possible, before getting up and walking away from my computer again for another 5 minutes. I will repeat this process of self-critique and small adjustments until I wouldn't change another single thing in my photo. Sometimes I'll only be 100% happy the next morning.
So that's why (in case you were wondering) it often takes me many hours to edit a single photo. :)

I shot this from the sidewalk. It's on Parliament Hill, east of the East Block, and it stands out alone against the sky, a memorial to the War of 1812, which Canada won. (We know we won because we're still here, not part of the US. Heh.) I don't recall seeing it the last time I was in Ottawa. I like it.

I have this silly dream (currently working on it) to visit every lighthouse in the west coast of the USA. :)
Anyway, this tunnel is on the way to Point Bonita Lighthouse--located in the entrance of the San Francisco Bay, which it was an adventure to find. Thank goodness for GPS navigation systems. :-)

Our Daily Challenge ... our parents war.
My parents fought to ensure that their children got the education they missed out on. My father qualified to go to High School but he had to leave to get a job, apprenticed to his father, who was a baker. My Mother went to High School but couldn't leave home to train as a nurse because her brothers were away at war and she was needed to help on the farm. So, education and working in our chosen field was high on the agenda. I know that it was often a struggle especially when Dad died at 46 and Mum had to do it alone.
I finally got my replacement camera on Tuesday and I spent a frustrating two days trying to work out how to change the Asian language to English. Finally went to a store today which had the same camera and had a look to see where the language control was in the menu and "Hey presto" I can now read what it says. It has some great new features to try out too. We also finally got a new aerial for our Internet today. So far it seems considerably better so hopefully I will now be able to catch up.
