During a day's layover in Honolulu-Waikîkî, I went to see the sights from the rim of Diamond Head Crater. The park itself is the least inviting of any I've seen in Hawai'i. Generally they're really very wonderful. This one consists basically of a small grassy area near the 'facilities' and for the rest public access is only to a relatively narrow walkway up to the crater's edge. The very large natural area of the crater bottom is quite out-of-bounds for the 'general public'. When I asked a guard why this is the case, he said that the crowds leave too much litter to clear away. Anyway, not being able to look at the plants and birds was a disappointment to me here.
The view from the rim, though, was fabulous, as this photo demonstrates. In the background Honolulu and Waikîkî, in the foreground Waikîkî's spacious Kapi'olani Park. It's not only the city scape that's different compared to - say - a century ago. This bright green area in the nineteenth century was basically a huge swamp made over into a park later. It was named for Esther Julia Kapi'olani Napelapuakak'e (1834-1899), Queen Consort of King David Kalâkaua (1836-1891). The name 'Julia' was pronounced in Hawaiian as 'Kulia', and that fits in nicely with the Queen's motto: 'Kulia I Ka Nuu' (Strive for the highest). That's certainly what I was doing on my climb to the crater's edge... as many with me. And I hope our 747 this morning does more than merely strive!

This image is a result of a Halloween party held in aid of the charity, Shine. I was honoured to be asked to photograph the event by a family who have been closely involved with the charity for many years, with Shine being a lifeline on a number of occasions for them all.
Shine is a registered charity, which was formed in 1966, initially to help families and individuals affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
Today, Shine is a community of 75,000 individuals, families, friends, and professionals, sharing achievements, challenges and information on living with hydrocephalus, or spina bifida, and related issues. Working together throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland, we strive to overcome challenges and achieve the best for you and your family.

I’m a huge Western Maryland Railway fan. I have an affinity for local history from my home town of York Pennsylvania and as a train fan also a keen interest in the railroads that served it. The Western Maryland was one of those and in addition to the local connection, I’v long admired it for the way it was run, and the pride the men of the Western Maryland took in their road. Many of my LEGO builds have been WM subjects but there is one I’ve wanted to do for several years but always seemed to put of. One of the Western Maryland’s Challenger type locomotives. the Western Maryland Railway’s Challenger is a locomotive that I’ve wanted to build for many years now. I wanted this to be a really special engine and a fitting tribute to what I think is a special railroad. And for a long time I guess I just didn’t feel my building skill would do the engine justice.
It wasn’t until last fall my friend and fellow PennLUG train builder Nate Brill, always wanting to push me to build my best, (but also probably growing tired of me talking about this engine) finally convinced me to build it and to make a competition out of it. Nate was interested in building his own Challenger, the Spokane, Portland & Seattle’s Challenger. I had met Nate at the 2009 NMRA National Train Show. We we’re both there helping with the LEGO train display that year and upon finding out he was a fellow Pennsylvanian I urged him to join PennLUG. We quickly became good friends and I owe much of how I’ve grown as a train builder to Nate’s influence. We have both strived to push each other to build better and better MOCs. I feel like every build is a collaboration. We often find ourselves bouncing ideas off of each other, solving a tricky problem on each others build and in general inspiring each to do his best. And so with this spirit in mind Nate set forth the challenge to see who could build the better Challenger. A “Challenger Challenge”.
We decided the winner would be determined through several tests. Speed, Train pulling capacity, Raw pulling power, Maneuverability, Battery life, and finally a vote by our fellow PennLUG members on who built the best model. The performance tests were undertaken on our recent display at the Greenberg Train & Toy Show in York Pa. Nate easily won the speed contest. On the train capacity though Nate’s speed proved to be a liability in that while his engine could pull a heavy train it would also want to pull couplers apart in the process. My engine though with it’s slower speed could better control the way it’s power was applied and kept the train together while pulling. Next was raw pulling power in which we tied the engines to each other and duked it out in a tug of war. Again my better power control and better traction won the day. For the maneuverability we each had to negotiate a standard LEGO switch. Sadly both of us failed under pressure, even though we had both done testing before and since with success, so no points for either there. last was battery life where Nate won. I had only managed 2.5 hours on a standard LEGO rechargeable battery where Nate managed a half hour more.
So with both our engines in a dead heat it came down to a vote from our club. At our February meeting we both presented our builds to the club and took a vote. It was a close vote but in the end Nate was the victor and I congratulate my good friend on his hard fought prize. I may have lost but I couldn’t be happier. Because we both pushed each other to do our best and because of that I built the Western Maryland Challenger I always wanted to build and now sharing a track with it is another stellar engine, Nate’s Spokane Challenger. I’ll leave Nate to present his masterpiece but for now I humbly present my beloved Western Maryland Challenger.
Starting in 1940 the Western Maryland Railway purchased 12 Challenger type 4-6-6-4 steam locomotives from Baldwin Locomotive Works. The Western Maryland advertised itself as the “Fast Freight Line” so it’s no surprise that they chose a fast, tall drivered Challenger design when shopping for new motive power. Designated as class M-2 they were most often referred to as ”the 1200’s” by the men on the WM referring to their road numbers (1201 to 1212).
While it could be argued that the speed of the Challenger type wasn’t the best fit for the Western Maryland’s mountainous grades, from their delivery until the arrival of the WM’s new 4-8-4’s in 1947 the 1200's did exactly the job they were designed to do. Running through on trains from Hagerstown to Connellsville Maryland and speeding up schedules on the “Fast Freight Line”. With freight train speeds of 50 mph between Hagerstown and Cumberland and 45 mph between Cumberland and Connellsville the Challengers made their home on the WM, pulling heavy loads and doing it in a timely fashion. The 1200's also occasionally worked trains east of Hagerstown to Baltimore but with this hilly and curving mainline and speeds limited to 40 mph they were not really at home there. After the arrival of the J class 4-8-4's in January 1947 the challengers rarely ventured east of Cumberland. Most of these trips probably were to receive heavy shoppings in Hagerstown.
One thing the challengers did for the railroad that can not be disputed is that they gave the railroad proof it was in the fast freight business. Regardless of the limitations of the locomotives themselves or their contribution to speeding up freight trains, salesman had a locomotive with big drivers they could show customers and potential customers. After all, every little boy at the time knew big drivers meant fast engines. How important was this to the WM? In 1952 they published a booklet to help celebrate the 100th birthday of the railroad. The Challengers, Potomacs, and diesels were all featured in the booklet. However, it was a builders photo of Challenger 1203 spread across two pages in the top center of the booklet that was most prominent. How does this prove the challengers to be important to the image of the WM? With the decision already made to dieselize the railroad challenger 1209 was stricken from the roster in August 1952, three months after the official celebration.
With the onset of dieselisation on the Western Maryland all the big Challengers were retired in 1953. Unfortunately none we’re preserved. It is my hope that that this model serves as a fitting tribute to one of the WM’s greatest steam locomotives.

Nova was the top model in the Chevy II lineup through 1968. The Chevy II nameplate was dropped, Nova becoming the nameplate for the 1969 through 1979 models. Built on the X-body platform, the Nova was replaced by the 1980 Chevrolet Citation introduced in the spring of 1979. The Nova nameplate returned in 1985, produced through 1988 as a NUMMI manufactured, subcompact based on the front wheel drive, Japan home-based Toyota Sprinter.

Gassers are based on production models from the 1930s to mid-1960s, which have been stripped of extraneous weight and jacked up using a beam axle to provide better weight distribution on acceleration (beam axles are also lighter than an independent front suspension), though a raised stock front suspension is common as well. Common weight reduction techniques include fiberglass body panels, stripped interiors and plexiglass windows (sometimes color tinted).

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。

Here's another six image panorama of Jubilee Creek in the Knysna forest.
Many people who know me also know that I often spend more than a few hours editing a single photo. This panorama was no exception. My camera might be able to capture all the details in the highlights and shadows in a scene like this, but I do have to tweak all the photos if I want my final image to look as realistic as possible. This is my basic workflow...
1. I open all the RAW files and make some basic adjustments. Then I save 2 copies (as TIFF files), one copy exposed for the highlights and the other for the shadows. Then I blend each of those pairs together using luminosity masks.
2. Next I stitch the blended photos together into one panorama using PTGui or Photoshop's Automerge feature (whichever does a better job). Then I save the resulting pano as a 16-bit TIFF file.
3. I open the stitched image in Photoshop and start off by cropping it to create the strongest possible composition.
4. Then I'll balance the overall exposure (if necessary) using gradient masks and the "blend-if" tool, and I'll also add some midtone contrast and tweak the white balance.
5. Next I might adjust specific colours which still don't look quite right. The red tones are often overrepresented in a forest photo, so I usually have to tone those down quite a bit. I also try to remove any blue and cyan tones from the sky that are reflected off the leaves.
6. Then I will adjust the black and white points and tweak the contrast until everything looks as close as possible to reality. Then I save my photo as a 16-bit TIFF file.
All those steps are easy to follow when you know how to do them. I've had lots of practice over the years, so I could probably perform them in my sleep. I wouldn't need more than about 20 minutes to complete those simple tasks. So why do some of my photos take several hours to edit? Because the final step is always the most important step...
7. I get up and walk away from my computer and won't return for at least 5 minutes. This gives my eyes some time to readjust to the reality of the world around me. When I return to my computer I ask myself one simple question; What DON'T I like about this photo? It might be a colour that appears a bit oversaturated (usually the greens or yellows), or it could be a small twig that catches my eye too often and becomes a distraction. I'll try to fix as many of those problems as possible, before getting up and walking away from my computer again for another 5 minutes. I will repeat this process of self-critique and small adjustments until I wouldn't change another single thing in my photo. Sometimes I'll only be 100% happy the next morning.
So that's why (in case you were wondering) it often takes me many hours to edit a single photo. :)
The Abraj Al-Bait Towers, also known as the Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower, is a government-owned mega tall building complex in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. These towers are a part of the King Abdulaziz Endowment Project that strives to modernize the city in catering to its pilgrims. The complex holds several world records, the tallest clock tower in the world and the world's largest clock face.

Early this morning we sadly heard that our grandmother, Bienvenida Pantaleon, passed away. Bienvenida was an amazing person who's loving hug would instantly make you feel at home and who's voice could lift you up from thousands of miles away. She incredibly raised 10 children, all of whom any parent would be proud to call their own. It is perhaps the solemn hope of every person to leave this world a better place than they found it .. Abuela was able to rest easily knowing she left the world ten times better with the legacy of her children.
Personally, she molded our mother who in turn molded us. We feel abuela's imprint on our lives every day by the decisions we make and in the type of person we strive to be. She expected the best of her children, who in her footsteps now also expect the best of theirs. For that we will always be indebted to her.
We love you abuelita. Your loss already leaves us with a hole we know we can not fill but we know you are in a better place now and will be with us again someday,

A Lincolnshire Branch Morris Minor Owners Club Rally held on Castle Hill during 2014 Weekend at the Asylum. Organised by Victorian Steampunk Society, Weekend at the Asylum is the biggest Steampunk Festival in Europe. It is held in the historic uphill district of Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
Since 2009, the festival (or convivial in Steampunk parlance) has been held each year in Lincoln and currently stretches over multiple venues in the historic cathedral quarter of Lincoln town, Lincoln Castle and Bishop Grosseteste University. It is run as a not-for-profit event organised by the Victorian Steampunk Society.
For four glorious days the historic streets of Lincoln are thronged with thousands of splendidly dressed steampunks enjoying a festival which strives to combine art, literature, music, fashion, comedy, and simple good fun.
The event contains programmes of features and entertainment, such as the Empire Ball, Majors Review (The Major's Soiree) and the National Tea Duelling final, along with lots of live music and comedy and the largest steampunk market in the World, the Bazaar Eclectica.

(We know we won because we're still here, not part of the US. Heh.) I don't recall seeing it the last time I was in Ottawa. I like it.

I reached, the only standing fort out of thirty five built earlier, The Daravar Fort. On the eastern flank of this massive brick-built fort stands a beautiful and petit marble mosque. Erected on an artificial platform the design of this mosque reminds the visitor of the great jamia mosque of Delhi.
Passing through the mosque, I walked towards the fort and entered through a huge wooden spiked gate. Every portion of the fort held a mystery inside. I could see so many frames longing to be captured. The massive brick structure seemed to be striving for survival. The remains were calmly resting as if it has been ages they are like this. The more I moved further, I was being pushed into a state of sweet solitude. I was enjoying the experience to the utmost. The aroma of tranquility prevailed all over and the dominant seemed weaker. The fear of all the powerful started fading away. In the absence of colors, light and shade played a talismanic role. The amazing sciagraphy, due to the different levels in the typology and the changing angle of the rays of light, played magical feats and created shadows which spoke a different language every other hour. Shadows have always accompanied me; always been a companion to me in this journey where I love carrying this crowd of loneliness around me.
Soon the sun started to set down. The light was getting darker. And once again, I had to bid farewell to my companion and move on…for another journey!
