It's Saturday morning, November 1, 2008... the last days of this election campaign, some are feeling worn out and are concerned to say they just can't give anymore... then there is an event like today that was so different, so refreshing and invigorating... Danny Devito, Rhea Perlman and Jon "Bowzer" Bauman toured Southeast Florida venues, encouraging people to vote early for Barack Obama, for people to get out the early vote for Barack Obama and to get out the vote on election day itself for Barack Obama. What was really amazing was that Devito, Perlman and Bowzer ended their events by actually driving people to the polls to vote if they had identified themselves as not having voted yet. So, after leaving the Cocowood Lakes Clubhouse, the carpool rock-n-rolled all the way to the early voting polls at the Public Library on Hagan Ranch Road in Delray Beach.
Standing at 4' 1", Danny DeVito is ten feet tall in my book. He is an actor, director and producer, that we all may best know him from his character, Louie De Palma, on the TV series, "Taxi". You've also seen him in wonderful films like, "Romancing the Stone", "The Jewel of the Nile", "Ruthless People", "Throw Mama From the Train", "War of the Roses", "Other People's Money", "Tin Men", "Twins", "Junior", "Batman Returns", "Renaissance Man", "The Rainmaker", "The Big Kahuna" and his appearnaces on Saturday Night Live. Right now Danny plays the character Frank Reynolds, in the hysterical sitcom "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" on FX which once you take a look at, you'll have so much fun that you'll be hooked. Danny DeVito is also an outspoken Democrat and supporter of the OneVoice Movement, a non-profit organization that strives to empower moderate Israelis and Palestinians to take a more assertive role in resolving their conflict.
Rhea Perlman, an active and outspoken Democrat, has received ten Emmy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series "Cheers", winning the Emmy four times. She starred in the sitcom "Pearl" and was featured in the TV drama "Kate Brasher". Rhea played Jacqueline Kennedy in the TV film "How to Marry a Billionaire: A Christmas Tale", the character Honey in the hilarious film "Canadian Bacon", the grumpy shopkeeper in "Packin It In" and she also played opposite her real-life husband Danny DeVito in the film "Matilda". Right now you can see Rhea Perlman in the role of Bertha in the West End of London, in the comedy "Boeing Boeing".
Jon "Bowzer" Bauman was a recognizable member of the group Sha Na Na, singing barritone as he taunted the audiences while flexing his muscles. Bauman currently tours extensively with his group, Bowzer and the Stingrays, performing at fairs, amusement parks, cruise ships and conventions all over the world. They currently headline "Bowzer's Ultimate Doo-Wop Party."
Talk about inspirational... this event was so out of the ordinary and so special because these incredible celebrities took so much of their time and made so much of an effort to convince undecided voters to get up and go with them to the polls and cast their vote for Barack Obama.

Even in winter one can find many motives to take a photo of. In post processing I played a bit with colours and texture to make it look less dull.

Still striving for that perfect black and white flower shot, whatever that might be. This isn't it, but I like it.
I am not a "flower photographer", but I do enjoy the challenge of getting a good flower shot. And while I don’t always know what kind of flower I am shooting, on a good day, I can usually tell a rose from a daisy.

Grace and poise
These images are part of a series exploring the concept of dedication and striving for perfection. While the audience sees the effortless, gracefully composed movements and impeccable poise - they are generally not privy to the ballerinas unending dedication, drive and persistent practice.
I find interest in pursuits whereby success can only be achieved with unending work and graft. Ballet embodies this in spades with the need for incredible strength, balance, timing and intense discipline.

The 2017 Weekend at the Asylum which is likely the largest and longest running Steampunk Festival in the World. It is held in the historic uphill district of Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
Since 2009, the festival (or convivial in Steampunk parlance) has been held each year in Lincoln and currently stretches over multiple venues in the historic cathedral quarter of Lincoln town, Lincoln Castle and Bishop Grosseteste University. It is run as a not-for-profit event organised by the Victorian Steampunk Society.
For four glorious days the historic streets of Lincoln are thronged with thousands of splendidly dressed steampunks enjoying a festival which strives to combine art, literature, music, fashion, comedy and simple good fun.
The event contains programmes of features and entertainment, such as the Empire Ball, Majors Review (The Major's Soiree) and the National Tea Duelling final, along with lots of live music and comedy and the largest steampunk market in the World, the Bazaar Eclectica.

We all strive to improve over time, be it a personal goal or a photo of a subject. The photo on the left is my first photo of a Marbled Godwit taken in Winderemere Basin in Hamilton in 2017. The bird was too far away. I used a 2x converter on 500mm lens to maximize the reach. The bird was barely recognizable from its shape and pink at the base of its beaks. It made my life list then. The second photo in the middle of a Marbled Godwit was taken in Stayner Sewage Lagoon near Barrie on May 27, 2019. The bird was closer, and the photo was better; however, there's still plenty of room to improve. The photo on the extreme right was taken in Tommy Thompson Park in Toronto on Aug 27, 2019. This time I managed to get a lot better picture with clear identification of a Marbled Godwit. Now, the question is am I going to stop taking photos of a Marbled Godwit? Most likely not, if the opportunity for betterment is there, so will be I.

Sunset shot over Jenny Lake in Wyoming's fantastic Grand Teton National Park.
In my striving to catch the colour here the mountains ended up a solid mass of black, so I've done my best with Photoshop 7.0 to bring (subtly) some of the lines back between the rugged ridges on the left hand side of the picture. Not sure it has been entirely successful, but the thought was there.

Chamonix is dominated by the white majestic dome of Mont Blanc, at 4,810m the highest mountain in western Europe.
Every year the summit of Mont Blanc becomes the ultimate objective for mountaineers the world over, all striving to stand on top of the roof of Europe and look down on all of the major summits of the Alps.
To climb Mont Blanc from Chamonix, people normally chose one of the two most common routes. Slightly more technical, the route from the Aiguille du Midi, over Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit is generally quieter, and highly dependent on conditions.
The slightly easier and more reliable option is via the Tramway du Mont Blanc to the Nid d'Aigle, then up the Aiguille du Gouter and the Bosse ridge.
While not technically challenging, ascending Mont Blanc requires a high level of physical fitness and experience using crampons and an ice axe.

Looking towards An Teallach, Wester Ross. I had been holding onto this photograph for a couple of months as I wanted to keep the powder dry on some of the photos I submitted to opoty 2018. With disappointment I can now say that none of the twenty photos I entered made the cut. It was the first year I had entered so who was I kidding that any of my photos would make the grade, but it still knocks you back a bit. On reflection I’m not into photography to win competitions, but at this late stage in my pastime it does not hurt to get peer recognition. I’ve been into photography for over 40 years and of late (with more time on my hands) it the thing that gives me day to day purpose. I should not complain, I’m now selling prints of my work, made several appearances in monthly camera magazines and even had several photos appear in a hardback book last year celebrating 50 years of drystone walls, but I’m still asking myself what’s missing in my work. However the question I should have been asking is do I like my photographs, as photography is a personal thing, or it should be, and the answer is yes (well some of them ). So I will strive to get better, try to get to the places I love, and enjoy it. Roll on LPOTY 2019,.
