16/12/2019 The track floods every year. But this year the volume of water is the highest we've seen since the "conveyer belt" of winter storms in 2014. The culvert seems to be blocked by debris or silt. But even if it wasn't it could not take this level of flow. To make matters worse, the track surface is being eroded by the force of water. It is becoming impassible to all but the sturdiest of 4X4s and those in a good tall pair of wellies. We are working on a temporary solution. A more permanent solution will have to wait till summer

Merry Christmas and a happy new year :-))
This is a good example of eutrophication. It looks kind of cool, but it's very unhealthy for the ecosystem depending on the body of water. The next day, I went back to this site and the park staff had started to cut all these plants out of the stream so it could flow as water again.
Eutrophication is an increase of nutrients in the water, which SOUNDS like a good thing, but it encourages the growth of algae and plants, which eventually cover the surface of the water, and block the oxygen from getting in. The fish and other organisms die from lack of oxygen, fertilizing the plant growth. Over a long period of time, a pond or lake could turn into a swamp and then a meadow. This is a natural process that happens regardless of human interference. But people cause this process to happen more rapidly and more frequently because of the laundry detergents we use (phosphorus) and the fertilizers we use (nitrogen). These elements wash into our water systems and hasten eutrophication. Hope I have that little science lesson right. LOL
