At the South-Eastern Asian festival in Ottawa, I turned around and just saw this pirate walk by; I managed to stop him, ask him for a picture and talk a few words of which I missed half because the music was really loud. No clue what a pirate, bloody sword and all, was doing there. Great outfit, it was difficult to capture a good shot because of the shadows but I think this one looks good. See comments section for the individual images.

this is my 27th stranger, i captured this along with 26th stranger (her boyfriend) :)
her name is Bian Dhona Fransisca from Indonesia
the same story as stranger 26. she is the girlfriend of Giancarlo Castro . you can say that she is in one package with stranger #26 so not much to say :D
but if i remember correctly, i explained in both English and Indonesia as i knew that Bian is Indonesia, hahaha. explained twice, got their email, shot about 2-3 shots, and done! :)

I was walking by these two teens and one said to me "I like your camera" that to me says "Take my picture, I will totally be one of your strangers" (from the 100 strangers project) I turned and said thanks and was going to ask, but her vicious poodle started flipping out, snarling and growling and snapping. Apparently the poodle was not a fan of my camera. So I moved on. Went inside the coffee shop where Zara was getting herself some coffee. On our way out I noticed how I could see them through the fireplace in the wall, there they were , conversation flowing and hands warmed by gas powered flames. I asked the folks to excuse my intrusion as I leaned in to get a shot through the fireplace. I kind of like it. :)
One of the things I love about the Davis Farmer's Market is that there's always something interesting going on. Whether it's delicious food samples, festive music, hand-made goods, or gigantic monster bikes, there's always something to look forward to. Funny thing was, it wasn't the 10-foot tall bike that grabbed my attention; it was Peter. Besides his fluffy white beard (I suspect he might be Santa Claus), Peter had this big smile on his face, full of intense joy, that made me want to take his photo. It was after I confronted him that I learned he was the maker of this large bicycle. He gladly climbed onto his bike and shared with us a little bit about it. He designed the bike so that his four kids* could bike below him while he controlled the steering. There's a tube next to his handle bars that is attached to a horn so he can alert anybody who passes by. The bike is completely street-safe and complies to all the traffic laws. Overall it's a quite creative machine and well built too.

I saw this man from a distance talking with some other men and I thought: "Wow, he's great, an aged black man, with a pigtail of white hair!". But I was on the phone with my brother and I let him go. Luckily he stopped again few meters later in front of a man recycling and re-painting an old wood table. I came by and I stopped too, without saying anything. I thought it was a hard job to get a picture of him.
He said "Hi!". I said "Hi!". He smiled me saying: "We don't have to throw away things, we must recycle them! It's a fortune there are people who throw them away so we can pick them up!". I agreed with my head and a smile but didn't say anything. "What is your name?", I asked after a couple of minutes. "Ban Maharaj", he answered, "I'm a Hindu spiritual father. I belong to the Hare Krishna movement" he added. "It would be nice if I could take a portrait of you", I hazarded. "Why?", he asked. "Now comes the hardest part ...", I thought. "Because I'd like to win my shyness, and since I like photography I'd like to do that using a camera, that helps me to talk with people that I don't know. There there's a project called 100 Strangers and ...". I must have scored a hit because he stopped me saying: "It's enough, you can take the photo", but being a spiritual father used to speak a lot, he added many other things: he's native of Suriname but he's been living in Rome since 38 years, he's a master of Bakhty Yoga and he had to fight against his shyness too when he was younger because he had to speak in front of thousands of people. To do that he had to transcend the materiality of things. I'm not sure I caught the whole concept ...
Before going away he asked me if I had family: I answered I was going to pick up the kids at school, so he said: "You're a good father", and blessed me.

A few days ago, I said that I wanted to start my own collection of stranger photos, so here I am starting one. I'm not sure how detailed I'll get with it though, like including names, ages, etc. I think I'll just include a detail or two I observed about them. I also might edit them all to have the same color scale as this one, or just black and white.

I met Marco in the middle of Placia Reial, Barcelona. Marco and his wife were on a city break and originate from Italy

I captured Eleanor along with stranger #3 Hope yesterday. Eleanor is only 19 and works as a fund raiser for a cancer charity. Eleanor is from Busselton which is a lovely coastal town south of Perth. I told her I had very fond memories of Busselton and I especially loved walking along the Busselton Pier.
The things I noticed most about Eleanor apart from her bubbly personality was her amazing smile and fabulous hair which I didn't capture as well as I could in this shot, I probably should have moved back a bit but I do seem to be gravitating towards these close in photos. Eleanor and Hope were full of fun, and infectious optimism and it was lovely to meet them both. They told me one of the highlights of their day was buying and eating a box of rainbow paddlepops. I now have a craving for a rainbow paddlepop so will pick up some at the supermarket on the way home from work and keep and eye out for stranger number 5.

Nathan is the boyfriend of April, my stranger 303. We all chatted nicely together; although each found it difficult not to be distracted by their partner, while I was photographing them.
They went to the same school but didn't get together until after they left school. In fact, I think they said, they didn't even talk to each other, while they were at school.
Nathan and April watch movies at home. April used to like gore but not so much these days. Now they are not into any particular genre but just like watching the films together. Nathan also enjoys architecture. They had been visiting Glastonbury town today and decided to investigate the abbey as they passed it.
Although Nathan said yes, when I asked if he was up for being in my project, he admitted to being a little nervous before taking his turn. Nevertheless he was in very good humour while I we were making the portraits.

Prentice was running a Caribean BBQ stall in a park near Waterloo station. I've had a break from stranger shooting and needed an easy win to get back on track and he was perfect. Surprisingly it was a difficult shot. He was under a tent which diffused the light nicely but the smoke from the BBQ gave an additional level that I'd not experienced before. Lucky for photoshop. Any suggestions on how I could get more of this most welcome!

Strangers passing each other in the street. fait has brought them together, but will it ever bring them together again..?? or this might be the only time that fait brings them together !!
A trip into Nottingham on a hot, sunny day, gave me plenty of opportunities to add to my stranger project. When the sunlight is so harsh, as it was this day, I scout around looking for usable backgrounds that are in the shade, meaning I won’t have to deal with excessive contrast caused by such bright light and deep shadows.
I waited for a few minutes by a white door, and soon spotted a young lady coming towards me who was wearing a white top. I thought white against white would make a striking combination and knew that the silky finish to her clothing would reflect light so it would appear brighter than the painted door even though they were the same colour.
Sarah is French and she said she was a tourist, taking some time out from her studies to travel. Sarah is studying medicine and hopes to become a doctor.
I asked Sarah what she liked to do when she wasn’t studying. Travelling was her first choice, and she told me Porto in Portugal was her favourite place that she’d visited so far. Sarah is also interested in fashion, and told me she spends a lot of time customizing clothes and shoes.
Is there anything Sarah can’t live without? Having breaks to travel and weekends too, was her reply.
What is Sarah’s guilty pleasure? Cheese, she said.

Once again in front of the Strasbourg train station. This guy was waiting for his girl. I ask him for the project, he agree. He was a really cool guy, and do a lot of different expressions: some of them were very fun :) I think I will put some other portraits of him. He's the kind of guy with a real charisma, the kind who can be your friend just with a gaze and a smile.

Today I went to a local dog groomer - Amber's Goochie Poochie. I explained the project to her and she was more than happy to volunteer.
Amber has been doing this for over 5 years and loves her line of work. She has over 200 clients. Sam, the poodle pictured above, is one of her favorites. Amber is also into photography and asked if I was taking classes and I told her I am self taught and that is part of the reason I am doing this project, so I can become better at making pictures.
For this shot I was able to setup a light stand and use a softbox on camera right and a bare strobe camera left.

The Beltane Pagan Festival held in Nottingham’s Sneinton market provided plenty of opportunity to add to my stranger project. The event was very well attended by both stallholders and visitors. Finding usable, clean, backgrounds was a problem, but they were there. I stood next to a black gazebo as I thought it would make for a perfect background. It was then just a matter of waiting for someone to come along who I thought would make a good subject to photograph against a black backdrop.
Zoe didn’t need any persuading to be photographed, and I knew the colour of her hair would really stand out against my chosen background. Zoe’s black clothing didn’t blend into the backdrop as her denim top was faded to a dark grey and the light was falling on her and not on the background thus giving separation to the very similar tones. The day was overcast, so the light was relatively soft and easy to work with.
Zoe had come from West Yorkshire to visit the Pagan Festival. She works in mental health and also volunteers for a charity that deals with the same areas as her job. When not working, Zoe enjoys collection items from beaches, such a shells, pebbles, and bits of broken pottery.
I asked Zoe to describe herself in one word, and after a moment of thought she said, “me.”
Does Zoe have a guilty pleasure? Her reply was no, and she then elaborated saying nothing she does makes her feel guilty.

Mirko was hired to copilot with Peter due to Peter's recent surgery. He's an interesting guy who, at age 21, is on his way to a career as a pilot. He's a true international whose mother is from an African nation and whose father is German. He had considered joining the Luftwaffe, but instead will soon begin flying for Lufthansa. He already has a more exciting life than just about anyone you'll meet. He's also a nice guy who patiently showed my son around the small plane he was flying--which Mirko referred to as a very basic trainer.

Continuing my walk in the Entertainment District of Toronto I met Luke who accepted to be my next stranger. Luke is 32 years old and works in customer support for an e-commerce company.
Luke was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and moved to Hepburn, Saskatchewan when he was a year old. At the age of 19, his family moved to St. Catharines, Ontario. He completed his studies in Business Administration at Brock University in St. Catharines, taught English in South Korea for a year and then went to Australia to get his Teacher's Certificate. Luke then moved to the UK and taught for a year and a half as a Supply teacher for various classes and schools (kids aged 4 to 12).
Luke returned to Toronto three years ago and his goal is pursuing a career in the financial and business sector. He enjoys living in Toronto because it is a city that is accepting of diversity and different cultures. His favourite neighbourhood is the Distillery District. Luke loves to see films and his favorite movie nominated for the Oscars this past year was Life of Pi.

I got a real work out in terms of my photography skills today. With the bright midday sun shining I knew it would be especially difficult conditions, and had to get my subject to move into the shadows to get anything half-decent.
The subject today is Ben, and as the excerpt describes he's a (talented?) musician. I asked him if he was still at school/college and he said he was but he dropped out. "Too many essays", he replied :)
I was drawn to his super shades and rocking style. While taking his portrait I avoided getting into the reflection by shooting from an angle. I've had a bit of practice with people's sunglasses, but I think I will turn the aperture down next time to get a deeper depth of field, as I feel the portrait is a little soft.

I was sitting on a bench, examining my photos of Kim (stranger #97) when Nick walked by. I hadn't planned on photographing any more strangers, but somehow words slipped out of my mouth asking to take Nick's photo anyway. =) Maybe I jumped at the chance to ask him because of the many times I've sat on benches waiting for a pedestrian only to be disappointed.
At first I thought Nick was shy because of his nervous laugh, but then he surprised me with some fun poses (see photos in comments,) and I learned that he wasn't very shy at all. Before we parted ways, I asked him the boring question I ask nearly all my strangers - where is he from? Nick's answer was a little less boring. He is from here "unfortunately."

I heard about the 100 Strangers Project last month and immediately thought that it was something I would like to do. Today was the first real opportunity that I have had to get out and about as I had a bit of time between finishing work and meeting my wife from her train.
I had a really interesting chat with Dan in the park - but he was reluctant to have his photo taken and I was heading back when I saw Bryn enjoying a pint and a cigar outside a local pub. When I asked if I could take his photo his first two questions were, "What's it for?", and, "How much will it cost?"
I gave him my card and explained about the project and he was happy to be included - thankfully for me!
Bryn told me he that he is a retired university lecturer (employment law) and that he and his wife regularly commute to Cheltenham from South Wales. Hopefully Bryn will look in and be happy with his portrait - he did tell his wife that they could look it up on the laptop as he showed her my card.
Thanks for being my first stranger Bryn - it was good meeting you (and Mrs Bryn!).

Jerry is Stranger #7. He was outside the office building where I was working. He's an usher at the Lyceum Theater next door where The Nance is playing, starring Nathan Lane. Jerry is a real New Yorker. He was gearing up for a busy Friday night with a coffee and a butt (the Marlboro variety). He was imitating the many older patrons of the show, struggling to climb up the stairs to get to their seats. "Oh, my back... Oh, my spleen..." The Lyceum is an older theater with limited elevator access, if any. The play is set in the 1930s, so it does appeal to an older crowd.
I started talking to him asking about his No Camera and No Cell Phone buttons. Obviously the theater doesn't allow patrons to record the performances. Once he told me what he did, I instantly got it. He hopes he snags a girlfriend from this photo.

...after those 5 beers I drank with Klaas (my previous stranger) I walked through a mall cus I had te deliver some photo's to a local musician.
Musician was happy so I went outside and was reading a textmessage on my cellphone as I was walking... I looked up and saw this guy walking with his wife and 2 kids. He immidiately took my attention with that red beard!
I said "Excuse me..." and we started a conversation. Told him about the project and he was pleased I asked him for that!
After a few minutes chatting he asked me some things about 20 years ago. If I've played in a band as a guitarist... huh? ehh... yeah. This guy is a complete stranger to me, but he knew me from 20 years back when I played the guitar in a band! He even knew the bandname! What are the odds?
He plays the bass in a band called "Icons of Brutality" and has a gig in 2 weeks from now. Maybe I will give it a try and take a look at your band playing old death metal classics...
Richard you are very curious how I've portrayed your ugly mug. Well here it is! :D

I was on my way back to work after lunch and spotted Brendan sitting in the mall listening to his friend busking. I sat next to him on the bench and asked if he would mind if I took his photo for the 100 strangers project. Brendan happily agreed. It was Brendan's interesting hairstyle that caught my attention. Brendan is 29 years old and is a qualified stonemason but is currently unemployed, he specialises in stone kitchen tops. I got the impression that Brendan was taking a break from work through choice but I may be wrong there. He was a lovely young man to chat to and I hope he likes the photos.

Yes, the glasses are the first thing you see when you meet Donna. Her grandkids hate them, but Donna is sticking with them. She's a retired public school art teacher and a forever artist whose one regret is she hasn't found just one form of art to focus on. She paints, she sculpts and she makes jewelry like the lovely blue piece around her neck. Now she's written a book showing others how to teach art. Great to meet you, Donna!

Stranger #62 is Israel, the boy friend of Marika (previous stranger). Israel seemed like a fun guy- after a couple of frames, he began to make silly faces.
It was about 7 o'clock when I took this picture; the sun was just about setting and began to show rays of gold light. There was a spot in the field where a single beam of light shined through the cracks of the trees so I directed Israel to stand there and strike a pose.
So, thank you Israel, you have become stranger #62 in my on-going stranger project.

Ramone was sitting in a inset window relaxing when I popped up and asked if I could take his picture. He was fine with the idea and totally relaxed. I wanted him to sit as he had been and not to pose and he did that without me having to direct at all. I took two pictures, one from slightly below and one more so. This was the one I liked the best.
When I showed him the pictures Ramone pointed out that I'd taken from his 'puffy eye' side. He said he had some kind of infection in his left eye. So I said not to worry, photoshop would take care of that. When I tooked at the picture I couldn't see anything wrong at all but being a man of my word I posted the heck out of his left eye just to be sure!

A cold, wet and generally miserable January afternoon in Belfast was improved when I met Naomi and her friends having a chat outside one of the shops in central Belfast. When I mentioned my project they all looked at Naomi expectantly and she readily agreed to participate. Not the best choice of background colours given Naomi's hair colour but the best available.

I saw Chris & his friend Charlie about to sit down in a shady spot at the “Hub” in central Newtown, so I headed over with Evan for an introduction.
After the formalities & the going through the blurb I moved Chris into a shaded spot in a side street. He was in a bit of a playful mood and gave me a whole range of poses and expressions which only made it much harder for me to choose the best one to post.
As it turns out Chris is no stranger to being on “show” as he is the lead vocalist/front man for a band called Glitter Canyon. He describes the band's genre as “Surf punk.”
He had just finished a big night performing at one of the local pubs and was chilling out before heading off home. As you can see he was still in his clothes from the night before and his croaky voice was testament to a big night.
Chris told me that he is into skating and actually has a half pipe in his lounge room.
When I questioned how big his lounge room would have to be to fit a half pipe in there he said he lives in an old warehouse converted in to a house so there is plenty of room.
I enjoyed chatting with Chris with his laid back personality and his antics in front of camera made the encounter fun & different.

We met David Wilson walking down Newmarket one sunny afternoon. As you can see from the photo the way he dressed certainly caught my eye not to mention his fantastic moustache!
You may notice that David is leaning on a huge Penny Farthing bicycle. He was cycling from Stewart island to Cape Reinga the entire length of New Zealand and we have a very hilly country! Thats 2104km, or 1307 miles for our American friends.
He had been at it for over 2 months and the entire endevour was for a record and to promote tourism for Omaru, a town in southern New Zealand.
Great respect to such a dedicated and selfless man, I certainly hope he got the rest of the way safely.
Stranger #72 is Chiana, a unique and incredibly well-rounded individual. Aside from being a mechanical engineer, an extraordinary basketball player, and a passionate musician, Chiana has one of those personalities that can just brighten anyone's day- in this case, my day. From the moments I got to share with her, I would describe her as bold and determined, yet gentle and humble. I'm sure she had lots of accomplishments she could have shared with me, but instead she cracked jokes and talked about her interests. One of her interests which I found surprising was she liked to go range shooting, an activity I wouldn't have expected a girl to like. But, I guess that's what makes Chiana unique- she's a person full of surprises.

The people I usually see blend into their surroundings, but Jake was not one of those people. Sharply dressed with papers in hand, I feared he would decline for lack of time, but fortunately for me he obliged. I ushered him into a small doorway where we stood on opposite sides with our backs literally against the wall. The light was decent, Jake was oozing with character, and all I had to do was get a decent exposure and frame the shot. He didn't say much other than "whatever you need man" on several occasions.
