Stranger #14 of the 100 Strangers Project: Greg, a friendly chap, has been working for the county department of public works for 28 years. He loves getting outdoors and meeting folks in the neighborhoods. In fact he grew a long beard to keep away from a desk job which has stricter dress codes than outdoor work.
Alice is a scientific illustrator. As she told me this, another lady said “I am a scientific illustrator. It felt like a bit of an “I am Spartacus” moment to me.
Both ladies were really surprised as it is not a common job. As the 3 of us stood outside the Post Office, Alice said that she had never met another scientific illustrator before.
Alice works freelance, doing illustrations for educational purposes, largely working in watercolours. She showed me a picture of an owl on her phone, it was beautifully drawn and had text identifying different features.

Sometimes Alice is asked to make images very small things. Viewing the subject through a microscope and making an illustration.
Alice was wearing glasses and she offered to take them off for me. The glasses were cool and suited Alice, so I suggested that I take a couple photos before she took them off. I liked both looks but my choice was one without glasses, as I liked Alice’s expression in this shot and the eyes were slightly clearer.

Stranger #51 – Nina
Nina was walking ahead of me. I still had in mind that one should always approach strangers from the front, let them see you. I sometimes overtake strangers by walking fast on the other side of the street and then coming back in the other direction. On that particular day, I just overtook Nina and did an immediate U turn and started talking with her. She was very nice about it.
Nina is stuyding literature, she’s about to graduate. She would like to work among books. When I met her she was experiencing doubts as to whether she would pursue a post graduate degree. I asked her what she likes about reading: “I like to be in my own world. Anything can happen around me, I’m still in my bubble.” Her advice to her younger self: “Don’t pressure yourself too much!”

Nina marchait devant moi. J’avais toujours à l’esprit l’idée selon laquelle je ne devrais pas approcher les gens sans qu’ils puissent me voir arriver. Souvent, je dépasse les gens en marchant vite sur l’autre trottoir avant de venir dans leur direction de face. Ce jour là, j’ai juste dépassé Nina et en la dépassant je me suis retourné en commençant à lui parler. Nina a été très sympa.
Nina est en 3ème année de Lettres modernes. Elle aimerait travailler dans les livres. Lorsque je l’ai rencontré, elle était en pleine remise en question, elle ne savait pas encore si elle allait continuer en master. J’ai demandé à Nina ce qu’elle aime dans le fait de lire: “J’aime être dans mon monde. Il peut se passer n’importe quoi autour, je reste dans ma bulle.” Son conseil à elle même quand elle était plus jeune: “Ne pas trop se mettre la pression.”

I always had the power of seeing something different in people. I had the idea of creating this project in 2014 when I realize I’m shooting a lot of portraits for my friends, clients, people on the street… So I transformed this passion into an artistic project where my goal wasn’t take just average pictures of strangers, but make portraits of them that reveals something.
It’s an on-going project which I want to take 100 portraits stories.
The first of a series of 99 strangers. I am perhaps too confortable with my style, I decided I have to risk a bit more with new challenges and I always wanted to be more cheeky to target people. So this "99 strangers" group seems a good excuse for me. I hope I can commit myself to the whole set of 99 strangers, maybe too many for me :-)

Stranger #78 – Marta – I met her in the centre of Wrocław, Poland. The sun was setting down and it was getting quite chilly so I was going to call it a day, but then I spotted Marta. I approached her, asked for a photo and she immediately agreed but not without claiming she’s not photogenic. Well, I heard that before... We moved a few meters to a spot with better light and in the meantime I explained the project. I took a few shots and we chatted for a moment. Marta seems to be a really nice person and that was an interesting encounter. I hope you like the result ;)

Wendy is a “worker” at the local newsagent/tobacconist. I went in to buy some lotto tickets for my clients and we got talking. She’s a netball coach and loves being with people. She especially loves it when the shop gets busy.

I was out shooting with fellow 100 Strangers photographer, Arnab, and a
rather gorgeous model and we were having fun with a street art backdrop that we'd discovered in an alley way off Denmark Street when I saw Derren. We were outside a couple of live music venues that could only be described as 'metal'. Now I may not look the part, but I am a metal head at heart so I felt perfectly comfortable there and as is always the case, the people hanging around there looked hard as nails but were all perfectly chilled out. There was some awesome sounding music coming out of the clubs and Derren walked up to a group of people, guitar case in hand and started chatting. Well I couldn't resist. I was supposed to be doing a focused shoot but the lure of the interesting stranger was too strong so I popped over and explained myself to him and asked if he'd pose for a portrait. Thankfully he agreed and came over to the spot that I had in mind. He had these really cool gold mirrored aviator sunglasses on but I wanted his eyes in the shot so he kindly removed them. There was weird light in this spot and I'd been struggling before to get the exposure right. The metering in my camera was simply not getting it right but I'd had some practice already with Laura so I had the measure of it and with a few adjustments managed to get the shot I wanted.
Derrin plays in a cover band doing hard rock numbers and had just arrived for a practice session. I wished I'd had more time to grill him on what music he played, what guitar he had in the case and how he set up his gear. Having dabbled in electric guitar I've found the similarities between electric music and digital photography quite striking. But I had to get on with my focus for the day who was remarkably easy going about the fact that I'd just walked off and started photographing someone else so I wished him well and off he went back to his mates, who were throwing some good natured banter his way.

Meet Vi.
Tattoos are such commonplace these days but I don't know why I have such a fascination and curiosity with them. I don't have any myself. I never saw the appeal if I'm being brutally honest, but I appreciate the art and how it represents differing personalities.
You can instantly see from Vi's face that she has lived an interesting life. We talked about art mainly, as she is/was an artist, and her experiences of it going through college. You can read her story here.

Memu and her friend and had just left a café when I stopped her and asked for a photo. She was very excited and agreed immediately.
I took quite a few shots of her and again had a hard time deciding on which one to post, but settled for this more relaxed shot from the side.
Memu is originally from Sierra Leone and has been living in Australia for 4 years. Next year she plans to study Journalism at university.
I really like her two-tone plaits and her bright red lipstick which contrasted well against her dark features. She was very interested in the project and loved having her portrait taken, so much so that she gave me my first stranger hug which was a pleasant and unexpected way to say goodbye.

In the train back home, I spotted an incredibly tall young man with a very cool hairstyle, so I planned to ask him for a photo if we got off at the same station.
Luckily, that's exactly what happened. After I told him about my project, he agreed with a smile and said he was very flattered. So we went down into the tunnel under the railway and talked a bit.
Josué lives in Guyancourt near Versailles, he is 19 years old and is a basketball player, which did not come as a surprise considering his impressive height. That evening, he had to play a match in Marly-le-Roi and was 2 hours early, so we had plenty of time to take pictures.
I asked him to stand at the entrance to the tunnel and fired off a few frames. The first pics were good, but there was a distracting ticket machine on the right, so I asked Josué to take a few steps back into the tunnel.
He crossed his arms, looked at me without smiling and I took a few more pictures. This second series was the right one.
Hope you like your portrait, Josué. You did a great job and personally, I think you look great ! Thanks for participating in my project and don't forget to contact me if you want the original files. By the way, I hope you won your match ?

Dans le train qui me ramenait chez moi, j'ai repéré un jeune homme immense avec une coiffure très stylée, j'ai donc décidé que s'il descendait au même arrêt que moi, j'irais lui demander si je pouvais le prendre en photo.
Par chance, c'est exactement ce qui s'est passé. Quand je lui ai parlé de mon projet, il a eu un sourire et m'a dit qu'il était très flatté. On est descendus dans le tunnel qui passe sous la voie ferrée tout en continuant à discuter.
Josué vit à Guyancourt près de Versailles, il a 19 ans et il est joueur de basketball, ce qui n'est guère étonnant vu sa taille impressionnante. Ce soir-là, il jouait un match à Marly-le-Roi, et comme il avait 2 heures d'avance, on avait tout notre temps.
Je lui ai demandé de se mettre à l'entrée du tunnel et j'ai pris quelques photos. La première série était bonne, mais un distributeur de tickets à droite de l'image gâchait un peu la fête, alors j'ai demandé à Josué de reculer de quelques pas.
Il a croisé les bras, m'a regardé sans sourire, et j'ai pris une deuxième série de photos. Celle-ci était la bonne.
J'espère que tu es satisfait de ton portrait, Josué. Tu as été parfait, et personnellement, je trouve le résultat excellent. Merci d'avoir pris part à mon projet, et n'oublie pas de me contacter pour que je t'envoie tes photos en haute résolution. Mon adresse mail est dans mon profil.

Mark is a lorry driver, “not long distance”, he told me. Today he was enjoying the sunshine and a bit of shopping with his girlfriend, Natalie.
He was happy to be part of my project and I offered to take a photo of the couple together after photographing Mark. Natalie wasn’t keen and said that she doesn’t like having her photo taken. Mark persuaded her and once she had agreed, Natalie posed nicely with Mark. I closed the aperture to ensure that both would be in focus and took three shots.
After sharing goodbyes and words of thanks, I set off home. About half way home I decided to review the photos and discovered that the shots of the couple were completely over exposed. I had been using a “new” lens (second hand) and had not tested it. Turns out that the aperture was not closing down. Such a shame :-(
Later I returned the lens and while in the shop met Chelsea, who will be my stranger 550 :-)
Thank you Mark for being part of my project. It was great to meet you and Natalie. It was a shame that the photos with Natalie did not come out. So sorry.

She was a completely stranger to me when I originally asked her for a portrait on the street. The same day I took her picture, she contacted me via email and I eventually got the opportunity for a photo shoot with her.
Stranger #41 – Marta – I met her in a popular meeting place in the centre of Wrocław, Poland. Her classy vintage hairstyle caught my attention when I first saw her. She was doing something on her phone when I approached her and asked for a photo. I have to say she looked genuinely frightened of the idea: “A photo? Of me? Why? Really?” So I told her I’m really good and people generally like how they look on my photos. Fortunately she agreed what actually surprised me a bit. So I took a few shots (which were great!) and asked for a different angle a few meters away - she agreed but I had to promise that these pictures would be the last. Of course Marta assured me that this is going to be an awful photo and the first bad portrait in the series. And you know what? Looking at the final result, I have to disagree with the statement :) Anyway, she is a very nice person and that was definitely a great encounter.

Pauline is a young woman who works since a few months to the restaurant Sylmar situated next to the theater Sevastopol in Lille. She smoked a cigarette, sat on the shop window, when I met her.
We made two tries of poses: one where she looked at the lens and at one where she looked far off. I preferred to keep the same style of photos as for the other strangers of the project and to present that where she manages her look towards me. I find this one more natural.

“I’ve been collecting quotes recently, and the one that sticks in my head is ‘The only way forwards is back’. I did a (graphic design) project recently, and we could do it on anything, the brief was really open. At first, I had all these ideas and thought ‘I need to condense this’, so what I found was that I had to go back to my old work to draw out the new concepts."
It was Victoria's accessories which first caught my eye as she was walking towards me - the Little Green Men earrings from Toy Story to the Thomas the Tank Engine watch (you'll have to take my word on that one).
Victoria studies Graphic Design and since there was quite a lot of overlap into photography we talked a lot about her previous projects and what her course was teaching her.
The last bit of our conversation, and where the quote above is from, was when I asked her how she found her inspiration, because that is something which artists often differ on and it's always useful, and interesting, to learn how others do it.

I was dishing out calendars in a mall and met this lady...
Joy is a sales associate in a popular jewelry shop. She is a cheerful and enthusiastic person and could pass for a fashion model specially during corporate events. She also loves to sing. Her immediate plan is to continue working and save-up money. She dreams to take up criminology. As a child she always wanted to be in the police force.

Zara was working as front of house in a London restaurant where we had a meal. As soon as I saw her I knew I wanted to ask her to take part in the stranger project. She was so busy that I almost didn't ask. When I plucked up courage she said yes but how can we do this quickly...so I knew I only had one shot at it. Ideally I would have asked her to pose holding some menus but time was of the essence so I just clicked and this is the result. I would have liked less light through her hair and more on her face but I was just so pleased she let me take her photo at all. She is a really lovely and beautiful lady and I don't think this really does her justice, but thank you Zara.

Stranger #93 – Rachel – I met her in Estrella Negra - the only vegan-friendly restaurant in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. Actually, she voluntarily helped me when I was trying to buy vegan food without being able to speak Spanish. At all. English doesn’t seem to be used much in this region so her translation was really appreciated. Anyway, during dinner I had a nice conversation with her and her boyfriend Andy (Stranger #94). It turned out she’s from Australia and Andy is from UK. The pair has been travelling through South America since September and I have to say I found that pretty impressing. They were both really nice so I explained my project and asked if they would be interested in having their portraits taken. They agreed immediately ;) I shot a few frames on the main street of San Pedro shortly before sunset and I hope you like the results. That was a very nice encounter and the couple was great company for dinner :)

My name is Abdelhak Guenaoui, I live by Tagnawite, it's been 13 years since I played Guenbri, the last track I could realize was "Wlad lghaba", I'm married, popular and I live each day as it comes in Casablanca. Thank God, Sometimes, I find myself in some magnificent houses. I'm on my way to the beach right now to meet some friends for relaxing because the urban stress bothers me.

Back to the strangers project! Meet Laurent, a 25-years old man that I met in a laundromat in Belval, Luxembourg. Having done a master of computer-science at Le Havre, he's now working at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology on analysing life cycle of industrial activities and products to make it more sustainable. He was just washing his laundry on his way home. Thank you Laurent :)

Walking through a local park, I spotted these two ladies. They were just about to leave and I really wanted to add the two to my strangers collection. I approached, did my pitch and they happily agreed to take a few pictures. Unfortunately, that's about as far as I got with the conversation. I did find out that they are sisters, ( I thought they were twins at first glance) and they have their own you -tube channel critiquing the latest in fashion, makeup and wardrobe. I have no idea where to find it. I'm going to count this as a stranger encounter, even though I'm embarrassed to say I didn't catch their names. Because of that I'm only going to count this as one stranger. I figure that evens out the karma. So, to the lovely ladies who make up my stranger #22, please email me (you have my email address) and I'd be happy to send you a copy of the picture. Thanks for being so kind and allowing this stranger to snap a few photos.

I like shooting tight. I also find that B&W is magic.
But so far in my project, I had never shot like this.
I was too nervous about approaching and I was missing the most important thing - to do what I like.
So, I made my plan for this one to be different. Meeting this particular stranger was a gift and helped me achieve the mood of the scene that i wanted.
He is studying Finance, final year, and he defines himself as beeing optimistic and trustful, so he sees nothing to lose to take a chance and participate to the project.
I must admit, revising the pictures after we split, I realized that being carried away by the moment I wasn't hundred percent sure that I memorized correct his name.
These being said and hoping I am not mistaken, thank you Lucian for being my #6 stranger!

My original plan when heading out Friday evening was to try to get a good, dramatic, backlight shot. The cloudy weather had forced me to change my plan. Then I found myself around Piccadilly Circus when miraculously, the sun came out to play. I knew I didn't have a lot of time and was scanning the crowds desperately when I saw Ola and a friend motoring up the street. I didn't think they'd stop but I had to try and thankfully, she was very happy to stop.
Ola is from Lille in France but is studying art in London. Artists are always great, they really get what we're doing. Ola was wonderful, working hard to get a super shot and the toughest bit for me was deciding which shot to use.
I went for a super tight crop because we were in an open, busy street and I didn't want any distracting elements in the background.

I spotted Dennis outside the Sprouts grocery store in Round Rock, Texas, and was taken with his face. We were almost done shopping when I saw him again nearby with his wife. I know I had to ask him to pose. He's originally from St. Louis, but has been all over. He was happy to pose, but didn't really want to chat. Perhaps those eyes said it all.

I met Evie at Nottingham’s Samhain Pagan Market. She was with her friend Christian, who you can see as my previous stranger.
Evie was standing by one of the entrances to the market so I decided to photograph her where she was. Evie said that seeing all kind of paraphernalia through the bars would give the image a better street look than if it had been a simple plain background. This comment came about as I was constantly changing my viewpoint to try and eliminate bright highlights from behind Evie that I felt would be a distraction.
Evie’s observation and the way she changed her pose and head angle each time I took a photograph gave me the impression she knew about photography and had some modelling experience. This she confirmed when I asked her and she told me she used to be a fashion model specialising in lingerie. She then said that the industry now considers her to old so she doesn’t model anymore.
Evie is from London but now lives in Nottingham. Evie has her own business designing and making wearable art/stage wear for heavy metal bands and wrestlers. Evie named Cradle of Filth and Lords of the Lost as two of her metal band clients and Lyra Valkyria from the wrestling world.
In her spare time Evie enjoys going ballroom dancing and taking part in historical European martial arts.
The one-word Evie used to describe herself was feral and her biggest strength is her empathy.
If I could grant Evie a wish, what would it be for? “For everybody to feel the results of what they do to others,” was her thought-provoking answer.

I spotted Stranger #17 crossing the street just as I pulled my car out into busy traffic. He was sharp dressed, had a distinctive face, and was wearing a cool fedora hat. I cursed that I had not found him five minutes earlier when I was actively canvassing the area for interesting strangers. I made the decision to try to track him down. I had to drive a few blocks down to the next traffic signal, turn onto a side street where I spun my car around, and then started backtracking hoping against odds that I could find him. I suddenly spotted him on my side of the street, and lo and behold he was standing on the sidewalk in front of the sole remaining open parking spot on the entire avenue. It was as though he was waiting for me. I did a terrible job with my hurried attempt at front end parallel parking (my car was sticking at least two feet out into the traffic). I jumped from the car, and before I made my way around to the sidewalk Stranger #17 began laughing and said, “You can do better than that.” The scene was even crazier in that a police office was only a couple of yards away observing my clumsy antics…fortunately it seemed he was slightly amused by the situation as well. I told Stranger #17 that I was only going to be a minute and then I explained my intentions. He gladly agreed to a portrait.
When I first saw him he was simply straight faced, but by this time he had broken out into a wide charismatic smile. It was the kind of smile that just beams with confidence which made me even happier that I had hunted him down. When I asked him for his name, he fumbled around in his jacket pocket and pulled out what appeared to be a postcard. He then pointed to his picture and name which was prominently displayed on the card. After a few shots we shared a couple of words, and I think we might have had a chat if I had not left myself parked in such a poor manner. I thanked him and off I went.
Later, I had a chance to look at the postcard. It was essentially a playbill for an awards ceremony of a local civic organization. His name was Charles, and he was being awarded ‘Man of the Year’ by this particular organization. Since I had both his first and last name, I Googled him and as I suspected the results were plentiful. I learned that he has been a leader in the community for decades. He was formerly a Cleveland City Council member, and is now serving on the board of several civic and charitable organizations. He has also met with the President and First Lady on multiple occasions. Just goes to show that you never know who you’ll run into on this 100 Strangers Project…especially when you put forth just a little bit of perseverance.

My LEGO Stranger Things cars so far.
I was asked to build Steve’s Beamer for LEGO 11370 Creel House, but the LEGO Icons team went with a different design.
Since I don’t really care for the real car, I built it in a few days maybe, and after my version was rejected, I didn’t spend any more time on it.
Usually I will build a whole fleet of these 6 wide cars (I have at least 10 Blazers in craziest colors), trying out different solves, colors, whatever. Here I built only one extra in blue, and that only because I wanted to see how the trunk will look like using the new 1x3 2/3rd slope, and the dark red paint I have doesn’t match the bricks at all, and looks terrible.
My grey paint matches perfectly though, and I spraypainted some white 11mm rims from the collectible F1 cars, turned them spokes out and although I’m not a great fan of that wheel, I think they would look okay on the BMW.
The WSQK van that I built for myself looks quite a bit like the one that made it into the box. Actually they only differ in small details, I prefer my mirrors, and I could use the ancient chromed exhaust.
I also keep tinkering with the Blazer when new elements appear that make it possible to fix some issues. The new wheel painted black (it’s out in light grey right now, and will come in dark grey in the LEGO City Garbage Truck), makes it possible to add hubcaps, although I don’t know if I should rather have used saucers instead. They are too big, but look better than the 1x1 plates.
