The old man of Storr taken around sunrise after climbing up in the dark in mid-December. This was as extensive as the view got with the clouds quickly closing in with further heavy snow showers as an early warning of what was to come.

Where would we be without a simple thing like a pen? - The first people to invent the pen as a basic tool to write were the ancient Egyptians. - On May 25, 1827, Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received patent from the French government for a fountain pen which had a barrel made from a large swan quill. In America in 1848, Azel Storrs Lyman got a patent for a fountain pen with “method of supplying ink to pens from a reservoir in the handle.

I had hopes to see the cliffs of "The Old Man of Storr" in sunlight but what I got was fog and mysterious light. That didn't turn out too bad on this one though.

The view overlooking loch Fada towards the Old Man of Storr is fantastic. In total, over the past couple of days, I have spent about 7 hours at this location waiting for the right light. Could have been better but happy with the final result. Maybe I will give it one more try 😬 For my blog on Skye visit www.martindevlinphotography.com/blog/

A few remaining photos from this year's Scotland trip.

This is after the weather turned sour, I walked up to the old man of Storr, waited hours for the clouds to clear, then gave up and walked back down, driving back to Portree, the skies cleared for a moment and I parked very illegally on this one lane track to take this photo.

Legend has it that the Old Man of Storr gets its name because the rock outline and the protruding pinnacle looks like the face of an old man. “Storr” means “Great Man”. This seemingly unclimbable pinnacle was first scaled in 1955 by the english Don Whillans, an incredible feat that has been repeated only a few times since.

Just after a heavy hail shower on Loch Fada, (Skye)

I am not convinced that the struggle up the hill in the dark, over ice and through snow was worth it for the results, but at least we (Stoates-Findhorn) can say we did it!

Surprisingly, we were the only ones up there!

The Storr on the Isle of Skye.

It is quite a hike to get up to this view point. I made the journey up the previous day but the notoriously fickle weather closed in and in the rain I eventually had to admit defeat. However an early start the next day afforded better conditions and this shot.

2 more from Skye this Autumn. A screech to a halt job as there was a rainbow over the Old Man of Storr. The rainbow disappeared quickly, but the Old Man and the Storr behind it played hide n seek with the low lying clouds addind a fantastic separation between the pillar of the Old Man and the looming black cliffs of the Storr behind. Normally the view here wouldn't work as the Old Man is lost against the cliffs. Nik Silver Efex mono conversion

It was great whilst the sun lasted and before the hordes arrived.

My first attempt at trying to capture the reflection of the Old Man of Storr .

I was immediately drawn to the still pre-sunrise reflection on the water up here at the Storr. The original plan was 'to get it all in' but I couldn't quite manage it even with the wide angle. In this particular shot I tried focusing on falling snowflakes in the foreground meaning that not much of the photos is in focus. I'm not sure what to think of it. I like the sense of depth but I don't think it has that much needed magic....

The snow flakes have only really come out at full size

Isla de Skye (Escocia) / Skye Island (Scotland)

I hiked up to the famous Old Man Storr the same day I arrived at Skye. I photographed the sunset, but it left the giant rocks in the shaddows. When the sun was gone I struggled for an hour getting my new tent set up. The image posted here, is the view I woke up too. Unfortunately, no clouds, but I wasn't complaining. After an hour of shooting, I had a lovely breakfast with bacon, Scottish roles, and coffee just admiring the view.
