Kate read in a magazine that a great way to store items (if they are reasonably attractive) is to display them in a manner as if they are supposed to be for show. Only catch: don't light them on fire while in storage. :)

Yellow zone is 2' off the main wall, all the way around the main open area of the basement. The storage system as thickened wall keeps the middle of the room open while maximizing unused wall area for storage. This way, storage can also be easily divided up by program, with each group using the storage areas that are most convenient for their own programming within the space.
Storage system could also encompass areas that become horizontal surfaces like counter tops, desks, or even larger protruding closets for bigger storage.
Perhaps could integrate the furniture storage into this thickened wall.
Smith Mine Ruins - Warehouse storage shelves (pushed over by vandals?) with the missing roof of adjoining room produced this puzzling display of angles and light/shade on the wall and through the doorway.

The self storage units are constructed of concrete and steel, and feature secure latches for optimum lock placement. When you store with Gladwin Self Storage you use your own lock and key, ensuring that you, and only you, have access to your storage unit.
Fully Fenced and Gated
Our facility is protected by a six-foot high metal chain link fence topped with barb wire, ensuring that unauthorized persons do not gain access to the facility. Further, access to the storage facility is limited to a single entrance/ exit point with a power security gate, requiring a security access code.
Computerized Access Control
Access codes are managed and monitored by the security system, ensuring that only current tenants have access to the facility. The entrance gate will automatically close after a set period of time, and requires the input of the access code to leave the facility as well. Further, all tenants are required to provide photo identification when renting a unit.
Video Surveillance
Strategically placed cameras record and monitor activity.
Security Lighting
The facility features a network of over 60 commercial grade lights which provide you with light to safely load or unload at your unit.
While loading some things in my storage unit, it hit me that this would be a cool spot to take my picture of the day. With no one around, I set up my tripod, grabbed the remote, and went for it.
Now we have a matching set on both sides of my makeup table, and my stuffies are on top, with 2 cute green lamps.

This is one of my storage crates I made that didnt turn out quite right. I saved it by putting flowers in it to hide the mistake! LOL!!!
