Workshop: Electricity Storage
organized by Pippo Ranci \ FSR
This area of the museum was blocked off due to asbestos removal and ongoing renovation. I took the picture through a window.
Here is a closeup of my storage caddy (it's really a locker organizer but it works great for this purpose!) I have a color wheel, tape and clear plastic measuring thing - I forget what it's called! The tube-shaped bag on the left started out to be a wine bag, but I didn't like it for that. Instead it serves as a holder for all my thread and silk ribbon scraps-works pretty well, too! These items are all located to my left as I sit at my desk and are easily within my reach.
Storage for short knitting needles, often used for knitting socks
Although I never learned how knit a sock, I use my 5-needle sets very often for knitting other seamless things (I LOVE seamless garments!)
Here we see 5-needle sets of 2,5, 3, 4,5 and 5mm. The XXXL crochet hook No S (I think around 20mm) found its place in the unoccupied space for 4mm needles. They are on a project assignment ;-)

When you plan about the storage of food for an emergency, you should keep in mind various things. The first and foremost point is that what kinds of #emergencies mostly happen in your area. The second essential point is how many members you have in your family. Another necessary thing is what type of food your family takes. How many calories should you need during evacuation? Last but not least point is what type of medicines your family is taking, or any other special diet.
When it comes to minor emergencies, we suggest that you should prepare your emergency food for at least three days. However, now the emergency circumstances have been changed; therefore, you should make ready your emergency food for at least 1 week. One week is the minimum time for emergency food storage. Three days to one week is a recommended period for perishable food products.
Food Storage for Short Emergencies
As I mentioned above, there is no specific duration for an emergency. Therefore, you should keep in mind the minimum period of at least one week. Well, the time duration of disasters is always unexpected; thus, it can prolong than expectations. However, we have seen in the past emergencies that there was an unexpected prolonged power outage. Moreover, in disasters' situations, there is a water supply outage and contaminated water in the area. Thus, the recommended objects are water and food. You should make ready water and food for a minimum of one week. Moreover, the food should be for every family member. For example, if you have five family members, you should save two bottles of water for every member. You cannot store food and water on random quantity. Apart from the family members, keep in mind the #food and #water #storage for your pets. You should prepare canned foods for your pets.
As I have talked above about the power outage, you should keep battery-operated mobiles and radios. Moreover, you should have battery-operated torches and heaters. Whenever you bump into an emergency, you do not know what will happen next. Or for how many more days you have to stay in a shelter. Therefore, you should have all the necessary living objects along with you. You can take a frozen meal with you. Keep the frozen food in a cooler.
Try to Become a Good Samaritan
In a disaster, many people want to help their neighbors. Many of us have elderly neighbors and stray dogs in the area. In an emergency, old people look for help and food. Thus, you should store some extra food for your old neighbors and pets. Moreover, you can help stray dogs and other animals in disasters. Do not go for something formal or special. You can store your type of meal for one extra member. At least help one person and one animal in the natural disaster.
Food Storage for Prolong Emergencies
A massive disaster can take a few months to set back the power and water supply. Moreover, if an earthquake hits your area, it can take you three to four months in a shelter. Thus, you should be ready for long-term emergency plans. For that, you should have an evacuation plan plus your food and water. If you are residing in a location, you can meet natural disasters anytime, you should have some savings in your account. The first thing you need is extra money. You will need financial support in an emergency. Apart from storing food and water, money is an essential object. Furthermore, you should have an emergency medical toolbox. You should have extra medicines for your elder family members, and you should have canned and frozen food.
If you are books lovers, then you should have a store of books in your home. But there are many people who make regular book storage and do not look attractive. In fact, they made the bookshelf very tedious and messy. As a book lover, you must store the books neatly so that the book is not torn...

One of the small bedrooms in my house was remodeled by us to hold all of the small parts. All the design work was done by my wife with the exception of the decision to use the sterite drawers and their arrangement, and (as you will see in other images) the brick crown molding, which I conceived and executed.
The work on this room (and all of our Lego Storage even areas not shown) was completed between mid Feb and mid May 2012.
Finished state. Clockwise - Red - Green - Yellow - Blue walls.

THE COMING RENEWABLE REVOLUTION
Distributed solar generation, energy storage, and smart grids are disruptive technologies that will transform the way that energy is produced, regulated, and consumed. Pair solar with batteries and smart micro-grid technology and individuals and businesses will be able cut the cord to the old grid. What are the challenges and opportunities that this disruptive technology poses to utility companies, upstarts, and other stakeholders? Looking ahead, what are the business models that will work?

Wanted to share a Windows image storage solution that will help you deal with single drive failures. A word of caution, though, it won't be as convenient for laptops - there is no quick removal option for this, so you will have to shut down the laptop before detaching the storage. For Mac users, you can still use a hard drive enclosure similar to the one above, but you need to use the Apple's equivalent of what is described here. See the mirror option on this page:
support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/disk-utility/dskua23150fd/mac
Enclosure
First, you buy a hard drive enclosure that can hold 2 or 4 drives. The one in the photo above (HF2-SU3S2) is an older USB 3.0 model and it costs about $140 CAD. The newer HF2-SU31C has a faster USB 3.1 interface and costs about $200 CAD. These enclosures do not have a hardware RAID option, which is what you would need for this (and it also costs less).
Hard Drives
Any hard drives will work for this, even different capacities, so you can put 2 drives 2 TB each or one 2TB drive, one 1 TB and two 500 GB drives - it will all work the same. You can buy a 2 TB hard drive for about $80 CAD, so the whole solution with the new enclosure and two drives to start will cost you $200 + $80 x 2 = $360 CAD and will provide 2 TB of automatically duplicated storage. That is, if any single drive fails, Windows will tell you that and you will replace the bad drive and Windows will copy all the data on its own.
Automatic Power-off
With any enclosure, before you put any data on it, see how it handles inactivity. The one above turns off automatically after a minute, which is not a good thing - you need to hold the Power Sync button on the right for 3 seconds, so it switches to a power sleep mode - when the computer is inactive, the enclosures just goes to sleep.
Setting up Storage Spaces
Once you have everything set up, click Start and type Storage Spaces. Create a drive pool, which will list all the new unformatted drives, and will combine all drives you have in the enclosure into a single storage pool. Now you can create a mirrored storage space - each will appear as an ordinary Windows drive, but data will be automatically distributed across all drives and each bit of data will be duplicated on two drives.
Windows allows you pick any storage space size, so you can create a 4 TB storage space with just two 2 TB drives and Windows will make it read-only once it reaches about 70% capacity of current drives and will ask you to add drives. For this reason, choose the storage size that is exactly or less than half the capacity of all your drives (e.g. if you have 2 drives, each 2 TB, create a storage space that is 2 TB - this is because of data duplication).
Again, you have to shut down the computer if you want to detach the enclosure. You cannot just yank the USB cable - you will lose data if you do that.
If any of the drives goes bad, Windows will warn you and you will buy another drive, attach it to the computer and tell Windows to remove a faulty drive and it will copy all data to the new drive from the remaining good drives. If the enclosure is full when this happens, you may need an external drive dock to plug in the extra drive while you transfer the data.
Similarly, if you have only two drives in the enclosure, you can add one or two more at any time and Windows will distribute all data onto all three or four drives.

I don't know a lot about the old Waukee elevator. Other than it obviously had been standing for a long time. My wife and I were driving by and notice an excavator in the lot and knew what was to happen. A week later all but the main wooden elevator were gone. As of this moment in I have not been by for a week or so. I am sure its gone also. I woman my son works for knows the history of the area and was talking about prior owners and time her father used the elevator when she was young. I am sure there are previous owners but per our conversation it was Dallams Elevator, then Garlands Elevator, Baer Ag still has a sign on the elevator. And last was Timberpine a green house in the area. From what people have stated on social media the Kum & Go a local gas station chain purchased the land to level it for a nice new giant convenience store. It should look exactly like 20 other stores in the area. A huge piece of history has again been lost. Not only a landmark wood elevator, but a very rare wood and wire wrapped grain bin. I have only seen this one although I have heard of a few that are around in the state yet.
