Human spinal nervous tissue cells grown together with vascular cells in the Spinal Cord-Chip, developed at Cedars-Sinai in collaboration with Emulate, Inc., for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease (ALS) research. Two compartments contain spinal neurons (green) in the top channel and microcapillary cells (red) in the vascular channel. The vascular channel forms a hollow tube that allows media or blood to be flowed through, mimicking the delivery of nutrients and drugs into the nervous tissue. Each chip contains cells specifically generated from an individual patient’s stem cells. Studies are underway in chips generated from ALS patients, with the goal of uncovering biomarkers of disease and aiding in development of experimental treatments.

A Flickr friend has asked to spread the word about donating stem cells for a friend in need. While I thought one only extracted stem cells - controversially - from stillborne fetuses, it seems we the living can help out too, for those in need of a bone marrow transplant. Check out Chris's photostream - TOrebelXTguy - at

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin in Madison identified two key proteins, lipocalin-2 and prolactin, that can be used to prime bone-forming stem cells. These images show how more bone (light purple) was generated in the mice receiving primed cells (right) than in those receiving untreated cells (left). This finding may lead to new approaches for regenerating bone lost to injury or disease.

Listen: Kickstart My Heart by Mötley Crüe

One of the things that needed to happen was the insertion of a PICC line. It’s a catheter that was inserted just below my clavicle in a vein, during a minor operation, that collected my stem cells and delivered the chemo directly into my heart. The operation was fast. One moment, while on the operation table, I was considering how I was gonna organize these photos. The next moment I was being removed from the table. I thought they had not done the operation and then I felt pressure under my clavicle of the bandages.

What is PRP - Platelet Rich Plasma?

PRP Platelet Rich Plasma is the use of a person’s own blood platelets to enhance hair growth as a stand-alone treatment or to improve the recovery and results of hair transplant surgery. In the field of tissue regeneration, research is continuing to progress regarding the use of PRP’s ability to stimulate stem cells, improve wound healing, and rejuvenate skin and hair follicles.

How is PRP performed as a stand-alone treatment for hair growth?

A small sample of blood is obtained from the patient. This sample is processed in an FDA-cleared device to separate the platelets from other components like red blood cells. Platelets are then chemically ‘activated,’ releasing powerful molecules which have profound biologic effects on hair follicles and skin. Under comfortable local anesthesia, this powerful cocktail of growth factors, cytokines and other proteins is injected into the area of scalp where weak hair follicles exist. Microneedling of the skin is also performed. Mild soreness, if any, resolves in less than a day and improved hair growth can be measured in a matter of weeks.

Is all PRP the same?

Unfortunately not, and this is where it can get confusing for patients (and physicians!). At Bauman Medical Group, we use the FDA approved Autologel PRP process to separate and activate Platelet Rich Plasma for use as a stand-alone therapy or in conjunction with hair transplantation. Bauman Medical Group is proud to be the first complete hair transplant team to be fully certified by Cytomedix to produce Autologel. That means that every member of our team has passed certification for the preparation and application of Autologel PRP. At Bauman Medical Group, we feel that our PRP/ACell protocols are providing significant stimulation of hair growth and hair follicle rejuvenation.

The following is an excerpt from an opinion piece written by the nationally syndicated Mr. Terrence P. Jeffrey, published July 16 of the present year in "The Washington Times." Mr. Jeffrey is writing about stem cell research, the Senate bill advancing such research, & the issue confronting George W. Bush & all equally fine, moral Christians. The opening bracketed words were written by me, not by Mr. Jeffrey:

"[In the past when deciding how stem cells must be protected from abuse by medical researchers] Mr. Bush was echoing a principle enunciated by the U.S. judges who tried Nazi doctors at Nuremburg after World War II.

"'In "The Nazi Doctors -- Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide," author Robert J. Lifton chronicled how Adolf Hitler seduced physicians into overseeing mass murder. It started when Hitler directed his own doctor, Karl Brandt, to make certain a single deformed infant was "euthanized." From there, it escalated to Dr. Josef Mengele monitoring the arriving trains at Auschwitz to choose which prisoners to send directly to the gas chambers, which to retain as workers, and which to send to his laboratory for experimentation and dissection.

'"It seemed easier -- perhaps more 'natural' and at least less 'unnatural' -- to begin with the very young: first, newborns; then, children up to 3 and 4; then, older ones," wrote Mr. Lifton, summarizing Germany's initial steps toward medicalized killing.

"At Nuremburg, the judges who sentenced Brandt and other Nazi doctors to death issued a code of principles they believed ought to govern research on human subjects. "The experiment should be so conducted as to avoid all unnecessary physical and mental suffering and injury," they wrote. "No experiment should be conducted where there is a priori reason to believe that death or disabling injury will occur... ."

"When researchers take a human embryo from an in vitro fertilization clinic to extract its stem cells, their intention is to kill it. The intention of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which Mr. Frist supports and will bring to a vote in the Senate, is to take money from working Americans and give it to researchers who, by Mr. Frist's own definition, will take human life.

"It not only violates the Nuremburg Code, it forces taxpayers to pay for the violation.

"Vetoing this bill would be President Bush's finest hour. Before sending it to him, Mr. Frist ought to consider why we condemned Nazi doctors and reconsider his position -- again [End, excerpt]."

Full text of Mr. Jeffrey's opinion piece is available here, entitled "Stemming from Nuremberg:" washingtontimes.com/commentary/20060715-082331-4199r.htm

----------------

- Today, Wednesday, July 19, Bush exercised the first veto of his presidency by striking down the stem cell bill.

----------------

For those who may not know, the 'Mr. Frist' referred to above is Senator William H. Frist, the very right wing physician & Tennessee Republican serving as his party's leader in the United States senate. He is almost a Bush appointee, & certainly a loyal Bush stalwart. He very much wants to become America's next president, however, so from time to time he does something his fellow right wingers find a bit independent & hence naughty. He's a very wealthy guy, too. He has a tidy share of his family's immense business, the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), which a few years back was convicted of massive medicare fraud & compelled to pay the largest fine ever assessed against an American company. Sen. Frist is presently under investigation because he is suspected - while serving as a seated U.S. senator - of using insider information to profit in the stock market. When making speeches, Sen. Frist, like his president, has difficulty forming sentences. But unlike his president, his manner is usually so mild one suspects his hero is Caspar Milquetoast.

Unlike Sen. Wm. Frist, who likes to be called 'Bill,' President Bush is not being investigated by any justice department. However, as Charlie Savage of "The Boston Globe's" staff has elaborately revealed & explained, the president has challenged & frequently broken over 750 laws since he took office. The full text of Mr. Savage's article is available on the internet, here:

www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2006/04/30...

In conclusion, I'll say something about the picture above. It's of an antique telephone on display in a large, magnificent facility; namely, The American Museum of Radio & Electricity, located in Bellingham, Washington. I quite like the bold appearance of the batteries mounted into the phone. I'd like to think they still have some juice in them. And I'd like to ask a question: Did anyone who used this telephone once upon a time in America ever think things would come to be this odd, this crooked ...

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) or adult stem cells are found in small numbers in most adult tissues, such as bone marrow or fat. Adult stem cells create only similar types of cells. For instance, MSCs could give rise to chondrocytes to form cartilage. The picture shows MSC-derived chrondrocytes in green and the cell nucleus in blue.

He doesn't look old enough but went into retirement recently. Now, after retirement, most people do something like gardening or go on a cruise or take up painting. Not this fellow; he wanted to "keep the brain alive" after retirement and so decided to do a degree..... on stem cell biology!

Stem cells (in green) of the hair follicle (outlined in magenta) reside in a specialized niche, called the bulge (outlined in red). They adhere to each other to maintain up to four bulges and four hairs (image on left, showing 3 bulges and hairs). Researchers have identified the protein FOXC1, as a regulator which controls how quickly the hairs regenerate and helps maintain multiple bulges and hairs. In the absence of FOXC1, the stem cells adhere poorly and can maintain only one hair, as in the image on the right. This can result in loss of the hair as the stem cells are depleted. This study may give helpful insights into treating hair loss from disease or aging.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are derived from skin or blood cells that have been reprogrammed back into an embryonic-like pluripotent state that enables the development of an unlimited source of any type of human cell needed for therapeutic purposes. iPSCs have the ability to differentiate into all germ layers, holding great promise for a robust cell source for cell-replacement therapies. In order to differentiate iPSCs into the target cell, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) tissue chip researchers are producing "embryoid bodies” --- three-dimensional aggregates formed in suspension by iPSCs.
