Today I stayed home from work . . . one of those days when I needed my own personal time off. Well, as I said, baking for me is quite therapeutic. (Too bad I don't find "cleaning" therapeutic or else the house would be spotless. . . Ha! Ha!) Baking is fun because I get to make whatever goodies I have a craving for. I usually like to have on hand cream cheese, powdered sugar, different nuts, and baking cocoa because I never know when I have the urge/need to bake. ;-) BTW . . . I baked 2 dozen of these red velvet cupcakes and brought a dozen to my halau (hula class) this evening. ;-)

Room for News The rabid newspapers, run by a couple of psychopathic would be megalomaniacs, are creating the agenda. Bojo the Wonderclown has lost all semblance of control. That feral over-entitled blond fool in Downing Street is running scared of Murdoch and his grisly gang.

Propaganda is the portrayal of opinion and wishful thinking as fact.

This was a painful 405 km drive, done with the completely torn tendons in my right shoulder! Need to stay home for a while.

My daughter had a free day on 18 April 2023, so we were able to go on one of our rare day's drive, SW and SE of Calgary. Many of the roads we covered were familiar ones to me, but we did end up on several 'new' roads, especially when we were lost for a short time. As so often happens when I get lost, I end up coming across something new to photograph.

It was 9:00 am when I picked up my daughter, and our first stopping place was Frank Lake. The light was awful, almost hazy, and rather windy, and this continued for much of the day. We found the Frank Lake area was rather flooded, so we only spent a very short time there. No access to the blind. The American White Pelicans are gradually returning to the lake for the summer. Two of them happened to be swimming by the two islands when we first arrived, but then they swam out beyond the islands. A few others were on the island.

Actually, this was the first time I had set foot anywhere, other than walking round my local grocery store, for many months! It felt rather strange to be walking on rough grass, which thankfully was clear of snow and ice. During the six or seven months of winter, with snow/ice on the ground the whole time, I knew I needed to be very careful after all the damage to my body from my very bad trip and fall mid-September. I am SO thankful that the ground is clear at long last, though we could still get more snow. In fact, it has been snowing this morning, 21 April!

From Frank Lake, we drove a few roads W of the highway, covering some of the roads I have been driving the last few outings I went on. I was so glad that my daughter got the chance to see a Great Horned Owl family. Other than that, we saw so few birds of any kind, but did manage to get a shot or two of one of the Western Meadowlarks that we saw/heard. I love it when the Meadowlarks return for the summer. They are such beautiful birds, with a delightful song. My daughter also spotted several Hawks during the day.

A long drive south, still on the west side of the highway, finally brought us to where I wanted to cross the highway and drive many of the roads in the SE. At first, I drove too far, having missed a side road that I wanted. All turned out well, though, as we came across several old barns that were 'new' to us. We also saw a couple of Ferruginous Hawks on a nest.

We stopped and ate lunch by a lake and then continued making our way northwards. Another Ferruginous Hawk sighting and a great Blue Heron before turning north. Practically no birds to be seen on the huge wetland in the area. The cold wind and overcast sky was perhaps partly to blame.

We made a very quick stop to photograph one of my favourite barns and then continued north. After quite a bit of driving, we found ourselves lost. A bit of luck made it worthwhile, though, when my daughter spotted a Great Horned Owl resting in a tree. We stayed in the car and zoomed in. Straight after that, she spotted an extremely distant, small herd of Mule Deer way across the fields. A row of several old, weathered sheds was the last thing we photographed. From there, it was a direct drive home that did feel rather endless after a long day. However, this is my favourite kind of day, when my daughter is able to join me!

It was a stay-home-all-day-in-my-pajamas-doing-chores kind of Sunday, so Oscar lit up the living room to take these photos.

All photos in this series by Oscar Avellaneda-Cruz (www.avephoto.com); all drawings, etc. by me. This week's drawing I made with my (non-dominant) left hand because the carpal tunnel syndrome in my right hand is so bad.

Stayed home 'sick'. Bought vegetables, uploaded trip photos, scanned sketchbook, watered plants, blow-dried chigger bites, and emailed Lucy Spelman asking for career advice. Uncovering Smithsonian drama in her past makes me unsure if she'll respond.

Stay Home Son!

A continuing evolution which is only a couple of months into it's progress- and why I don't wind up answering IM's right away :D

Inside

If the door were open you could come inside,

Here is happiness - all your deep desire.

From dawn to day's end I wait

The tragedy; none to hold dear.

I hold, in quiet solitude,

A frosted empty glass,

Begging to be filled.

STAY HOME / STAY SAFE

I see this sign every time I drive past RMC (Royal Military College) on my way to work. It's been up for a while now (ever since Ontario stopped all non-essential businesses) I work the night shift, and the business I work for is taking precautions to keep my peers and I safe. Only 2 people are working at a time, and we wipe everything down before and after our shifts, with a minimum 30 minutes in between shifts. We also check our temperature first, and are sent home if there's signs of fever.

As I was taking these photos the military police rolled up to see what I was up to. (because I was parked on RMC property) One questioned me while the other visually searched my car. They kept their distance, and put on gloves before taking my ID. After they ran my plates and ID, everything checked out and they let me go.

I usually don't post photos out of chronological order, but I thought I'd post something relevant to the craziness going on around the world.

Stay safe everyone!

El Greco The brilliant, hot sunshine on this Bank Holiday weekend that is hardly a holiday, reminded me of those mornings on a Greek island, the tang of sea spray in the air, the Mediterranean breeze wafting hot coffee and ouzo, then, POP! imagination vanished and I was returned to my own back yard.

Not to be outdone, I gathered together these suggestions of Hellas in the bright sunshine.

Stayed home from school because I am sick, got a little bored so I decided to practicing taking and editing portraits, it was a bit challenging since I was the only subject.

Staying home on a rainy day, catching up on photos.

I stayed home from work, headachy and tired-feeling. Maybe too much sun on the weekend? But anyway, it allowed Jeff & me to check out the eclipse— Vancouver wasn't in the path of total coverage, but still almost 90%! We didn't have eclipse glasses so we did the trick of bringing out a colander to check out the pinhole shadows. Pretty cool.

Did a bunch of editing in the afternoon, made linguine puttanesca for dinner, and went to yin in the evening. I almost lost it in there because for some reason the 'hot ham water' bit from Arrested Development popped into my head. 233/365.

Today I've decided to just stay home. Welcome in my house!

With everything going on with COVID-19, I'm staying at home and only going out for essentials (e.g. groceries, to refill prescriptions) or for chemo treatment.

I’ve completed my 2 sessions of radiation to eliminate the cancerous lesions in my mouth. Treatment was divided over 2 days, was painless, and I’m now focused on post-radiation oral hygiene (e.g. brushing with a special toothpaste, using homemade mouthwash, remaining hydrated) to reduce the risk of infection.

My March monthly blood test results continue to trend in the right direction. My cancer levels dropped to 47 from 48 in February.

I’m feeling alright and staying positive.
