Shawn David Green (b: November 10, 1972) is a former MLB player. Green was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays as their 1st round pick (16th overall) in the 1991 amateur draft. He ultimately struck a deal with the Blue Jays.
In 1992, Green played for the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League, and was selected to the league's all-star team.
Green spent most of 1993 and 1994 in the minors, where he compiled impressive numbers. In 1994, he hit .344—winning the International League batting title—while ranking third in runs, hits, and on-base percentage and hitting 13 home runs with 61 RBI for Toronto's AAA affiliate, the Syracuse Chiefs.
Green made his Major League debut on September 28, 1993 as the second-youngest player in the Major Leagues. Though he did not play in the 1993 World Series, he was awarded a World Series ring. He would appear in just 17 games in 1993 and 1994.
In 1998, Green was granted an everyday spot in the line-up and he delivered by becoming the first Blue Jay to both hit 30 or more home runs and steal 30 or more bases in the same season. He also became the tenth Major Leaguer to hit 35 or more home runs and steal 35 or more bases in a season, joining among others Willie Mays, Barry Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez.
He finished the 1999 season batting .309 (a career best), with 42 home runs (5th in the league), 134 runs (2nd in the league, and a career best), 123 RBIs, and a .588 slugging percentage (5th best in the league).
On November 8, 1999, Green was traded with Jorge Nuñez to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Pedro Borbón, Jr. and Raúl Mondesí.
On May 23, 2002 the turning point of his season, he had one of the best single game performances ever. He hit a Major League record-tying 4 home runs and a record-tying five extra-base hits (he hit a double in addition to the home runs) against the Milwaukee Brewers, and had 19 total bases, breaking Joe Adcock's 1954 Major League record by one, while matching the major league record of 6 runs scored in one game. No other major league player had 6 hits, 5 runs, and as many as 4 extra-base hits in a game again until Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers in 2009. He hit a 5th home run during the following game to tie the Major League 2-game home run record (5), and then hit 2 more the game after to break the Major League 3-game record (7). Green also broke the NL record with 9 home runs in that calendar week.
He chose to retire before the start of the 2008 season, as he wanted to be with his family. Green was arguably the best Jewish baseball player since Sandy Koufax, and only Hank Greenberg, with 331 home runs and 1,276 RBI, has more major league home runs and RBI than Green.

These two articles illustrates how statistics can be manipulated. In order for a Chinese passenger to get on a plane, the passenger must present a negative Covid test taken within 48 hours. That is a requirement of the Chinese authorities. But countries such as South Korea and Japan require yet another test upon arrival. South Korea defends its policy by citing "people traveling from China who tested positive for Covid-19 went up 14 times from November to December." Well, in November, while China was practicing its zero Covid policy, there were practically no one tested positive. So 14 times of an extremely small number is most likely still a very small number. The first article below demonstrates that. China's international outbound bookings were described as "way down" from pre-pandemic level, but it went up by 192% from the previous year.
On top of that, South Korea is currently facing a very high infection rate, so the chance of visitors contracting Covid while visiting South Korea is quite high. It baffles me why anyone would want to visit any of the countries listed on the Johns Hopkins screenshot above. Here in the U.S., we have been warned that practically everyone may catch XBB.1.5.

China's flight bookings way down despite reopening, data shows
China's outbound flight bookings were at only 15 percent of pre-pandemic levels in the week after the country announced it would reopen its borders, despite a 192 percent jump from the same period last year, according to travel data firm ForwardKeys.
Low airline capacity, high airfares, new pre-flight COVID-19 testing requirements by many countries and a backlog of passport and visa applications pose challenges as the industry looks to recovery, ForwardKeys Vice President Insights Olivier Ponti said in a statement on Thursday.

South Korea shares eye-opening Covid statistics to defend its new rules for travelers from China
South Korea on Tuesday hit back at claims that its Covid rules for Chinese travelers are "discriminatory," saying more than half of its imported cases are coming from China.
In a response to CNBC, Seung-ho Choi, a deputy director at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said that up to 80% of "imported confirmed cases" in South Korea are coming from China.Choi said the number of people traveling from China who tested positive for Covid-19 went up 14 times from November to December."

China stops issuing visas to Japanese and South Korean visitors as spat over test mandates for Chinese tourists widens
Japan and South Korea protested the visa stoppage, the AP reported separately on Wednesday.
South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin said he finds it “significantly regrettable” that China stopped issuing short-term visas to South Koreans and called for China to align its pandemic steps with “scientific and objective facts.”
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno criticized China for “one-sidedly” restricting visa issuances to Japanese nationals “because of a reason that is not related to COVID-19 measures.”

In the U.S., the seven-day average of new cases stood at 63,982 on Tuesday, according to a New York Times tracker. That’s down 4% from two weeks ago and below the recent peak of 70,508 on Christmas Eve.
The daily average for hospitalizations was up 15% to 46,900. In an alarming statistic, the average for deaths stood at 580, up 50% from two weeks ago.
Cases are currently rising in 22 states, as well as Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Northern Mariana Islands. In Maryland, cases are up 170% from two weeks ago.
On a per capita basis, New Jersey and Rhode Island are showing the highest rates, with New Jersey recording 32 cases per 100,000 residents and Rhode Island 31.
Cases are also high on a per capita basis in North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as Mississippi and Florida.

• Cyprus has joined the list of countries mandating COVID testing for tourists from China, the AP reported. The health ministry said it was heeding the advice of the European Union’s executive arm in requiring passengers from China to submit results from a PCR test taken 48 hours before their departure. The ministry also recommended the use of protective face masks on all flights to and from Cyprus as well as in any areas where people gather in large numbers.
• The Chinese air-travel regulator is preparing to allow airlines to fly more routes between China and the U.S. following the lifting of COVID travel restrictions, state TV reported Wednesday, as the AP reported. U.S. and Chinese airlines are among some 40 carriers that have submitted applications covering some 700 flights per week involving 34 countries, China Central Television reported on its website. It gave no timeline for when normal flights might resume.
• The Pentagon formally dropped its COVID-19 vaccination mandate Tuesday, but a new memo signed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also gives commanders some discretion in how or whether to deploy troops who are not vaccinated, the AP reported. Austin’s memo has been widely anticipated since Dec. 23, when a new law gave him 30 days to rescind the mandate. The Defense Department had already stopped all related personnel actions, such as discharging service members who refused the shot. “The Department will continue to promote and encourage COVID-19 vaccination for all service members,” Austin said in the memo. “Vaccination enhances operational readiness and protects the force.”

The global tally of confirmed cases of COVID-19 topped 665.3 million on Wednesday, while the death toll rose above 6.7 million, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University.
The U.S. leads the world with 101.3 million cases and 1,097,660 fatalities.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s tracker shows that 229.3 million people living in the U.S., equal to 69.1% of the total population, are fully vaccinated, meaning they have had their primary shots.
So far, just 48.2 million Americans, equal to 15.4% of the overall population, have had the updated COVID booster that targets both the original virus and the omicron variants.

Original caption: Hubble Space Telescope astronomers are finding that planets have a tough time forming in the rough-and-tumble central region of the massive, crowded star cluster Westerlund 2. Located 20,000 light-years away, Westerlund 2 is a unique laboratory to study stellar evolutionary processes because it’s relatively nearby, quite young, and contains a large stellar population.
A three-year Hubble study of stars in Westerlund 2 revealed that the precursors to planet-forming disks encircling stars near the cluster’s center are mysteriously devoid of large, dense clouds of dust that in a few million years could become planets.
However, the observations show that stars on the cluster’s periphery do have the immense planet-forming dust clouds embedded in their disks. Researchers think our solar system followed this recipe when it formed 4.6 billion years ago.
So why do some stars in Westerlund 2 have a difficult time forming planets while others do not? It seems that planet formation depends on location, location, location. The most massive and brightest stars in the cluster congregate in the core, which is verified by observations of other star-forming regions. Westerlund 2 contains at least 30 extremely massive stars, some weighing up to 80 solar masses. Their blistering ultraviolet radiation and hurricane-like stellar winds of charged particles blowtorch disks around neighboring stars, dispersing the giant dust clouds.
“Basically, if you have monster stars, their energy is going to alter the properties of the disks,” explained Elena Sabbi, of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, lead researcher of the Hubble study. “You may still have a disk, but the stars change the composition of the dust in the disks, so it’s harder to create stable structures that will eventually lead to planets. We think the dust either evaporates away in 1 million years, or it changes in composition and size so dramatically that planets don’t have the building blocks to form.”
The Hubble observations represent the first time that astronomers analyzed an extremely dense star cluster to study which environments are favorable to planet formation. Scientists, however, are still debating whether bulky stars are born in the center or whether they migrate there. But Westerlund 2, a young 2-million-year-old system, already has massive stars in its core.
Using Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3, the researchers found that of the nearly 5,000 stars in Westerlund 2 with masses between 0.1 to 5 times the Sun’s mass, 1,500 of them show fluctuations in their light as the stars accrete material from their disks. Orbiting material would temporarily block some of the starlight, causing brightness fluctuations.
However, Hubble only detected the signature of dust particles around stars outside the central region. The telescope witnessed large drops in brightness for as much as 10 to 20 days around 5% of the stars before they returned to normal brightness. They did not detect these dips in brightness in stars residing within four light-years of the center. These fluctuations could be caused by large clumps of dust passing in front of the star. The clumps would be in a disk tilted nearly edge-on to the view from Earth. “We think they are planetesimals or structures in formation,” Sabbi explained. “These could be the seeds that eventually lead to planets in more evolved systems. These are the systems we don’t see close to very massive stars. We see them only in systems outside the center.”
Thanks to Hubble, astronomers can now see how stars are accreting in environments that are like the early universe, where clusters were dominated by monster stars. So far, the best known nearby stellar environment that contains massive stars is the starbirth region in the Orion Nebula. However, Westerlund 2 is a richer target because of its larger stellar population.
“Westerlund 2 gives us much better statistics of how mass affects the evolution of stars, how rapidly they evolve, and we see the evolution of stellar disks and the importance of stellar feedback in modifying the properties of these systems,” Sabbi said. “We see, for example, that stars can still accrete material. They still have their disks. It doesn’t matter that they are close to massive stars, but the structure of the disks seems to be very different. We can provide all of this information to the models of planet formation and stellar evolution.”
This cluster will be an excellent laboratory for follow-up observations with the upcoming NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, an infrared observatory. Hubble has helped astronomers identify the stars that have possible planetary structures. With Webb, researchers can study which disks around stars are not accreting material and which disks still have material that could build up into planets. This information on 1,500 stars will allow astronomers to map a path on how the star systems grow and evolve. Webb also can study the chemistry of the disks in different evolutionary phases and watch how they change, and help astronomers determine what influence environment plays in their evolution.
The planned infrared observatory NASA’s Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), will be able to perform Sabbi’s study on a much larger area. Westerlund 2 is just a small slice of an immense star-formation region. These vast regions contain clusters of stars with different ages and different densities. Astronomers could use WFIRST observations to start to build up statistics on how a star’s outflow and mass work in determining the evolution of stars. The observations could also provide more information on how planets form in tough environments.

Bradford vacated their historic - yet dilapidated - Park Avenue ground owing to hefty renovation costs and relocated to Wagon Lane, Bingley. Un momento storico per le restituzioni, e per l’Italia. Il J. Paul Getty Museum di Los Angeles ha annunciato oggi che restituirà al Paese il Gruppo scultoreo di un Poeta Seduto e Sirene, un gruppo di figure in terracotta a grandezza naturale della seconda metà del IV secolo a.C. proveniente dalla colonia magnogreca di Taranto, noto anche come Orfeo e le Sirene. Il museo statunitense starebbe inoltre collaborando con il Ministero della Cultura per organizzare la restituzione di altri quattro manufatti, a data da destinarsi. Il gigantesco museo a capo dell’omonimo centro per le arti ha già rimosso i manufatti dal percorso di visita in preparazione per il trasporto a Roma a settembre (peraltro molto difficile, vista la fragilità delle sculture), dove saranno affidati al Ministero della Cultura.

IL GRUPPO SCULTOREO ORFEO E LE SIRENE
La restituzione non è per l’Italia una vera e propria sorpresa, dato che già all’inizio del 2006 l’opera compariva in un elenco di manufatti di cui si rivendicava il possesso e si chiedeva la restituzione. Stando alla commissione permanente in Senato su Istruzione pubblica, beni culturali, ricerca scientifica, spettacolo e sport riunitasi nell’agosto 2020, “il bene, databile secondo la maggior parte degli studiosi nell’ambito della seconda metà del IV secolo a.C., si compone di tre statue, originariamente policrome: due figure femminili stanti (140 per 55 centimetri circa), riconoscibili come sirene in base alla conformazione ornitomorfa della parte inferiore del corpo, e una figura maschile seduta, vestita del solo mantello, variamente identificata come poeta, come Orfeo o semplicemente come un defunto del quale poteva costituire parte del monumento sepolcrale.

La figura maschile impugna con la mano destra un oggetto allungato, probabilmente il manico di un plektron, secondo l’interpretazione di Bottini e Guzzo, che ipotizzano nell’altra mano l’originaria presenza di uno strumento a corda. L’opera è riconducibile con certezza al patrimonio culturale italiano e proviene probabilmente dal territorio tarantino”. Lo stesso Getty Trust, si legge ancora nel verbale del Senato, aveva sottoscritto nel 2007 una convenzione con l’allora Ministero per i beni e le attività culturali che aveva permesso il rientro in Italia di molti beni preziosi e che stabiliva l’impegno del Ministero a “interpellare previamente il Getty Trust prima di procedere al recupero di beni archeologici dei quali sia acquisita la prova della provenienza da scavo clandestino e/o oggetto di esportazione illegittima dall’Italia di beni archeologici presenti nelle collezioni del Getty Trust

LA POLICY DI RESTITUZIONE DEL GETTY MUSEUM DEI MANUFATTI SOTTRATTI ILLECITAMENTE
Il Getty – un’istituzione di livello globale con una enorme collezione che va dalle opere greche alle fotografie del Novecento – ha adempiuto così alla propria policy di restituzione dei manufatti al Paese d’origine, obbligatoria nel caso in cui vi siano informazioni affidabili a indicare che siano stati rubati o scavati illegalmente. “Grazie alle informazioni fornite da Matthew Bogdanos e dall’Unità per il traffico di antichità dell’ufficio del procuratore distrettuale di Manhattan che indicano lo scavo illegale di Orfeo e delle sirene, abbiamo deciso che questi oggetti dovrebbero essere restituiti”, hanno dichiarato i direttori Timothy Potts, Maria Hummer-Tuttle e Robert Tuttle.

Ma non finisce qui: secondo ricercatori dell’istituzione e studiosi indipendenti, bisognerà restituire anche una colossale testa in marmo di una divinità del II secolo d.C.; uno stampo in pietra del II secolo d.C. per la fusione di pendenti; un dipinto a olio intitolato Oracolo a Delfi (1881) di Camillo Miola; e un thymiaterion in bronzo etrusco del IV secolo a.C. I primi tre di questi oggetti furono acquisiti dal fondatore J. Paul Getty e dal Getty Museum negli anni ’70, il quarto nel 1996, e nessuno di loro è più stato esposto al pubblico negli ultimi anni. “Apprezziamo il nostro forte e fruttuoso rapporto con il Ministero della Cultura italiano e con i nostri numerosi colleghi archeologi, conservatori, curatoriali e altri studiosi in tutta Italia, con i quali condividiamo la missione di promuovere la conservazione del patrimonio culturale antico“, ha affermato il direttore Potts.

The J. Paul Getty Museum is returning its Orpheus group of sculptures — a culturally significant group of nearly life-size terra-cotta figures known as “Orpheus and the Sirens,” some of the museum’s greatest antiquities — to Italy. The objects, which have been determined to have been illegally excavated and exported, will be sent to Rome in September. The institution is coordinating with Italy’s Ministry of Culture to send four other objects back as well at a future date.

“The Getty is not in a position to comment on information that led to the return of the Orpheus,” spokesperson Julie Jaskol said. “The information was supplied by Matthew Bogdanos of the Antiquities Trafficking Unit of the Manhattan district attorney’s office, who developed the evidence in an investigation unrelated to the Getty. The evidence persuaded us that the statues had been illegally excavated and it was appropriate to return them in accordance with Getty policy.”

They represent a singer Orpheus seated and 2 standing sirens. $550,000 from Bank Leu. All of these naturally were on [Czech American archaeologist Jiří Frel’s] recommendation.” Frel was the Getty’s antiquities curator from 1973 to 1986.

“It is a very important work. I’d even say one of the most important in the [Getty Museum’s] collection,” Getty Museum director Timothy Potts said in an interview. “So it will be a loss as to what we can represent about the art of the ancient classical world, in this case southern Italy in the late fourth century B.C.”

Potts said the work is especially unique because of its scale, quality and subject matter — it suggests the mythical story of Jason and the Argonauts, which would make the sculpture’s seated man, who plays a harp-like instrument, Orpheus.

“It’s just extremely rare and there’s nothing similar in our collection, or closely similar in any collection,” Potts said. “It does leave a hole in our gallery but with this evidence that came forth, there was no question that it needed to be sent back to Italy.”

The other pieces being returned to Italy — none of which have been exhibited in recent years — are a colossal marble head of a divinity and a limestone mold for casting pendants, both from the second century A.D., along with a 19th century oil painting by Camillo Miola, “The Oracle,” and an Etruscan bronze thymiaterion, a ceremonial incense burner, from the fourth century B.C. The latter was acquired by the Getty in 1996 while the other three objects were acquired in the 1970s.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Salzburg and the Department of Statistics of the Alpen Adria University of Klagenfurt organized the conference in collaboration with the "Methodenzentrum Versuchsplanung" of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), the Department of Statistical Modelling of Saint Petersburg State University and INFORMS Simulation Society (USA).
This international conference is devoted to statistical techniques in stochastic simulation, data collection and design and analysis of scientific experiments and studies representing broad areas of interest.
The 1st- 6th Workshops took place in St. Petersburg (Russia) in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2005 and 2009. The Seventh International Workshop on Simulation took place in Rimini in May 2013, the Eighth Workshop took place in Vienna in September 2015, and the Ninth one in Barcelona in June 25-29 2018.
