When I look at a scene like this old red barn standing watch over a pasture dotted with cattle, I am carried back to the Minnesota of my youth.

There were around 74,000 more farms in Minnesota in the 1950s than there are now.

A statistic like that can tell us that farm numbers fell by more than half. It cannot tell us what it meant when three neighboring farms each had around ten children, and two teams of kids could be gathered for a ball game on a summer evening without anyone driving more than a few miles.

Back then, families with eight, ten, or even twelve children were not unusual. Every child had chores. Before school, there were cows to milk, eggs to gather, pigs to feed, and hay to move. The work was hard, but it created a rhythm of life that bound families together. Parents, children, grandparents, and neighbors all depended on one another.

The countryside itself felt different. On summer evenings, the sound of baseball games drifted from town diamonds. Church picnics filled weekends. One-room schools and small rural congregations were woven into the fabric of everyday life. A farm was more than a way to make a living, it was a home, a workplace, and often the center of a family's identity for generations.

Progress brought many benefits. Modern machinery, improved crops, and technology allowed fewer people to produce more food than ever before.

Farms grew larger and more efficient, while the need for labor steadily declined. As a result, many farmsteads disappeared, schools closed, and rural populations shrank.

The gains in productivity are undeniable, yet something quieter was lost along the way. The pastoral landscape of scattered barns, large families, and neighboring farms gave way to broader fields without fences and fewer homesteads.

Today, when I see a lone barn beneath a darkening sky, surrounded by grazing cattle and green pasture, I am reminded not just of a place, but of a way of life, a slower, closer-knit world that shaped generations and now survives mostly in memory.

Hawthorne Bridge - NRHP #12000932

The Hawthorne Bridge is a truss bridge with a vertical lift that spans the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, joining Hawthorne Boulevard and Madison Street. It is the oldest vertical-lift bridge in operation in the United States and the oldest highway bridge in Portland. It is also the busiest bicycle and transit bridge in Oregon, with over 8,000 cyclists and 800 TriMet buses (carrying about 17,400 riders) daily. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in November 2012. (#12000932)

Statistics

The bridge consists of five fixed spans and one 244-foot-long (74 m) vertical-lift span. It is 1,382 feet (421 m) in total length. The bridge was originally 63 feet (19 m) wide, including two five-foot sidewalks, but the sidewalks were widened to 10 feet in 1998, increasing the structure's overall width to 73 feet (22 m). The 880,000-pound (400,000 kg) counterweights are suspended from the two 165-foot-tall (50 m) towers. It is operated by a pair of 150-horsepower motors. On average, the lift span is raised for river traffic 120 times per month. While the river is at low level, the bridge is 49 feet (15 m) above the water, causing it to be raised an average of 200 times per month. The bridge was designed by Waddell & Harrington, which also designed the Steel and Interstate bridges. John Alexander Low Waddell invented the modern-day vertical-lift bridge.

History

The current bridge was built to replace the second Madison Street Bridge, a wooden bridge built in 1900. It cost $511,000 to build and was opened on December 19, 1910. Hawthorne Boulevard (and thus the bridge) was named after Dr. J.C. Hawthorne, the cofounder of Oregon's first mental hospital and early proponent for the first Morrison Bridge.

The streetcar tracks across the bridge were originally in the outer lanes, but were relocated to the center lanes in 1931. The deck was changed from wood to steel grating in 1945.

In 1985 the lift span sheaves, the grooved wheels that guide the counterweight cables, were replaced. The bridge went through a $21 million renovation from 1998 to 1999, which included replacing the steel grated deck and repainting. The original lead-based paint was completely removed and replaced with 3 layers of new paint that is estimated to last 30 years. During this upgrade the sidewalks were widened to 10 feet (3.0 m), making it a thoroughfare for bicycle commuters. Due to the replacement of the steel deck during this project, the channels which used to carry the rails for streetcars and interurban trains were also removed. The bridge was closed for one year to permit the renovation to be carried out.

The original color of the bridge was black, lasting until 1964, when it was repainted yellow ochre. During the 1998–99 renovation, the color was changed to green with red trim.

In 2001, the sidewalks were connected to the Eastbank Esplanade. In 2005, the estimated cost to replace the bridge was $189.3 million.

The 2003 film, The Hunted, included a scene set on MAX on the Hawthorne Bridge. Since MAX does not cross the bridge, the movie company connected two articulated buses remodeled to resemble a MAX train, complete with fake overhead lines and a sprinkler system to simulate rain. Light-rail (interurban) service did cross the Hawthorne Bridge until 1956.

The new deck put in place in the outer lanes during the 1998–99 renovation was designed to be strong enough for possible use by modern, heavier streetcars or light rail trains in the future, which was proposed at that time, and TriMet was still considering a Hawthorne Bridge routing for its future MAX Orange Line, to Milwaukie, in 2002. However, following the transit agency's later decision to build the Tilikum Crossing for the Milwaukie MAX line, which bridge could also be used by the Portland Streetcar, it became unlikely that rail cars will ever again cross the Hawthorne Bridge.

The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in November 2012.

A large, elegant sandpiper, the Greenshank feeds in shallow waters, often chasing small invertebrates and fish, which it hunts by sight. During summer, Greenshank are found only on moors and bogs in Scotland, but during migration, they can be found across the UK on inland freshwater lakes and marshes, and coastal wetlands.

How to identify

Greenshank can be distinguished from similar-sized waders like Redshank and godwits by the colour of their legs: grey-green. Adults are olive-grey above and silvery-white below, with dark streaking on the breast. Greenshank have long, slightly upturned, grey bills.

Distribution

A passage migrant and scarce visitor winter visitor to shallow wetlands inland and around the coast. Nests on the boggy 'flow country' of northern Scotland.

Perisher Valley (elevation 1720m) is a ski resort village in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, in the Snowy River Shire. It is one of four resort bases of the Perisher Ski Resort, which also comprises Guthega, Blue Cow and Smiggin Holes.

It is located within the Kosciuszko National Park between Jindabyne and Charlotte Pass on the Kosciuszko Road. Access to the Valley is via the Skitube Alpine Railway or by road. It is primarily a winter only resort village, although all year round accommodation is available.

Perisher Valley is situated at 1720m above sea level. The summit of Mount Perisher above the village reaches 2054m of altitude. The highest lifted point is the Mt Perisher Double Chair at 2034m. According to statistics posted on the Perisher website in 2012, the recognised natural snow line in the region is at 1650 metres and over the previous 15 years, the average maximum snow depth throughout the Resort had been about 1.9m. Average minimum temperature during winter was stated as -3.7°C.

Last year 71 elephants were killed in the Kruger National Park, up from only 2 in 2014, 24 in 2015, 46 in 2016 and 67 in 2017. Another 4 died last year as a result of injuries sustained in snares. Most of the elephants were killed in the north-eastern part of the reserve, bordering Mozambique. While concentrating on protecting the Rhinos against humans the poaching of elephants is escalating. Where will it all end?

I always find that statistics are hard to swallow and impossible to digest. The only one I can ever remember is that if all the people who go to sleep in church were laid end to end.... by ira tucker

These "clouds" are a star-forming region referred to as the Bubble Nebula, or NGC 7635. In the middle of this cloud, there's a hot young star creating some significant solar wind that is blowing out a spherical section, leaving behind something that looks a bit like a bubble. The whole formation is a little over 7,000 light-years away in the direction of Cassiopeia.

I often use narrowband imaging for my astrophotography, but I shot this one in pure RGB, so this is exactly what both the eye would see if it could gather in enough light. And this is exactly what a normal full-color camera would show if I did a similar exposure with it. BUT... I only have a monochromatic astrophotography camera, so this came from separate exposures in red, green, and blue.

According to Flickr statistics, the most used device for uploading images is not a camera - it's a cellphone.

Which is, in fact, the modern equivalent of last centuries disposable film camera. But now it's 'good enough' for almost anything, easy to use and most importantly, always with you.

But no matter how much computational photography is used, physics can't be beaten. It still suffers from a small sensor and limited lens. Bigger really is always better, and with the right tool and effort more satisfaction can be the result.
