Note-Grids are a tool for collecting and connecting objects of thought (in this case, words).

They treat words and other manifestations of thought as objects that can be freely manipulated to create new meaning.

They break meaning up into individual words to facilitate a more fluid, intuitive, and improvisational approach to knowledge production.

Artist Statement:

“When Carla asked me to design a logo and installation for the Capital Campaign, we talked for a while about the theme of Widening Our Welcome. We thought about the cross as the central visual piece in worship, and a central symbol in Christianity. What might it look like for the arms of the cross to reach out further, wider?

The colorful ribbons that have been hanging from the cross symbolize the act of widening our welcome. The rainbow is a sign of promise and of welcome, we use it here as a sign that God's love and grace reach out the wide, beautiful spectrum of all of God's beloved children. With each week, these ribbons extend further out into the sanctuary as a sign of our intentional desire to widen our welcome.

There is a symbolism in their arrangement as well, with watery colors stretching out over the front and colors of growth stretching out over the word. Central to the installation is the representation of fire, the Holy Spirit at work within and around us. The ribbons hanging from the pulpit represent all of our stories. Part of welcoming another is to truly listen and seek to understand who they are. At the launch lunch, these smaller ribbons were used at tables as talking sticks; participants passed them around the circle as they shared and heard one another's stories of welcome.

Like all art, there is meaning made by the artist, but also by the viewer. I hope that you have found meaning in this installation and that it has inspired further reflection on what it means to widen our welcome.” —Noell Rathbun
