Artist Statement:
It’s important for people to visually see what’s going on in our community and the effects it has on people within the community. Some people don’t witness any of these themes, like racism and police brutality, so that’s why it crucial for artist to create art that brightens their knowledge and bring awareness to the “Black lives matter” movement. With that said, I have created a piece that shows a little girl with her father holding hands and cutouts that the little girl made. The little girl has a pitiful face expression that shows she doesn’t what to lose her father due to police brutality. The cutout is a way for her to express her hopes and dreams, which displays a policeman among different races, including African Americans, holding hands to show unity and respect for one another. I choose to use a little girl as one of the main focus points to tug at the audience’s heart and to show this problem in the perspective of a child.
For the background I painted in the outline of America with the American flag and muted their colors. I decided to mute the colors of the American flag to, not only make the figure pop against it, but to also mute the meaning behind the American flag. Each color in the American flag represents something. The white signifying purity and innocence, the red signifying hardiness and valor, and the blue signifying perseverance and justice. All together the American flag means freedom, however not everybody who lives in America feels that freedom or justice has been put into action. Which ultimately leaves them feeling unsafe in their own country and skeptical about the security system.
Statement from Birmingham Against the Cuts meeting 13th November 2010 hosted by Right to Work
This meeting takes place at a time of escalating resistance to the wholesale attack on working class people in this country
5,000 people outside the lib dems conference in Liverpool supported by the NW Regional TUC
7,000 people outside the Tory Party Conference supported by several National Unions and many local organisations
25,000 people at Scottish TUC demonstration aqgainst the comrehensive spending review
50,000 students and workers demnstrating in London this Wednesday backed by NUS and UCU
The student demonstration was a magnificent show of strength against the Con Dems’ savage attacks on education and the largest since David Cameron came to number 10. During the demonstration over 5,000 students showed their determination to defend the future of education by occupying the Tory party HQ and its courtyards for several hours.
We celebrate the fact that thousands of students were willing to send a message to the Tories that we will fight to win. Occupations are a long established tradition in the student movement that should be defended. It is this kind of action in France and Greece that has been an inspiration to many workers and students in Britain faced with such a huge assault on jobs, benefits, housing and the public sector.
In addition this meeting notes the fantastic protests and actions in Birmingham in recent months including:
7000 strong Right to Work demonstration against the Tory Party Conference backed by several national unions (up to 4000 of which attended were local)
The protest against the Comprehensive Spending Review initiated by the Peoples Charter, supported by Right To Work, Save Our Services, BTUC.
Over 30 students occupying and closing the Vodaphone store 2 weeks in a row over tax justice
We support the decision of the TUC to call a mass demonstration against the cuts in March.
We need more resistance to the ConDem government and Birmingham’s ConDem council in the lead up to this national march.
We need to engage the entire labour movement and build the widest possible unity between workers, students, the unemployed and communities.
We support the efforts being made to bring closer co-operation between these constituent parts with a view to forming a Birmingham wide Anti-Cuts Alliance. The Birmingham Trades Union Council initiative to draw together trade unions and campaigns is a welcome step toward this.

With sorrow, we are releasing this statement on the occasion of our beloved Getatchew Haile's passing. It was an honor to call him a husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed.
Prof. Getatchew Haile passed away on June 10, 2021 in New York City after a long illness. Prof. Getatchew’s groundbreaking achievements in Ethiopian Studies reshaped the field, and his dedication to his beloved Ethiopia was a source of global renown. He was widely admired for his courage and resilience in the face of significant personal challenges, while his generosity of spirit and joyful embrace of life endeared him to devoted family, friends and colleagues across the world. He leaves behind an enormous legacy and an equally enormous void that will be deeply felt.
Getatchew was born in rural Shenkora, Ethiopia in 1931. His was a modest upbringing that encompassed a period of upheaval and homelessness resulting from the Italian occupation. He was eventually able to enroll at Holy Trinity Spiritual School in Addis Ababa, and at the conclusion of secondary school went abroad for further study. He received a B.A. (1957) from the AUC The American University in Cairo, a B.D (1957) from the Coptic Theological College in Cairo, and a Ph.D. (1962) from the UNIVERSITY OF TUBINGEN (Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen), Germany (where he changed the spelling of his name from “Getachew” to “Getatchew” to ensure proper pronunciation by German colleagues).

I apologize for the awful photos. I'd have better ones, but husband just got home and we are both wore out...so I snapped some myself...and what you see is what you get.

I liked the way this guy's…erm…outfit, sort of blended in with the scenery. His hat matches the blue (and white) on the posts and his coat seemed to go with the 'pattern' (created by the birds) to his left, and the color behind him. I also liked the way he looked directly at the camera when he saw I wanted to take his picture.
Artist statement: Evolution is like gravity, it happens whether or not it’s noticed. It took Darwin, a keen observer and tireless documentarian, to put it all together and add it to the human experience as fact.
Evolution is about survival, and the flip side of survival is death. The birds here are behind a screen. The screen is death, circumstance, luck. Or perhaps it’s the fingerprint of the human species. The birds here have survived. They look at the viewer. Survival is not given, it’s earned. Can they continue to survive in the shadow of our species?
I used a macro lens to photograph color plates from Birds of America, edited by T. Gilbert Pearson and printed in 1936 by Garden City Publishing Company, Inc. The paintings for the plates were painted by Louis Agassiz Fuertes.

The IAEA Event: Net Zero Needs Nuclear Power will highlight the crucial role of nuclear power as part of the energy mix. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr Rafael Mariano Grossi will announce the ‘IAEA Statement on Nuclear Power’ supported by 40 countries, both those already operating nuclear power plants and newcomers. Together these countries acknowledge that all available low-carbon technologies, including nuclear power, should be recognized, and actively supported. The Statement underlines the benefits of nuclear power, including that nuclear power plants produce no harmful greenhouse gas emissions; that nuclear energy contributes to energy security and the stability of power grids; and that it mitigates air pollution at a local level.

Bob Dylan once wrote that money doesnt talk, it swears. Linking investments and human rights abuses should get attention. My name is XiaochenFeng. I was born in 1995 and I am from Dalian, Liaoning province.
When I was 5 years old, I was always drawing everywhere using my Father’s painting brush. At that time, my father told me: “Creativity can bring the most happiness.” his words have always been on mind since then.
I am very lucky and proud of having such a father: he always teaches me that all inspiration roots from careful observation and you will never have a lack of inspiration as long as you are good at observing (My dad is a university professor, an Artist, and an interior designer. He was born of the creation ability and open minded). It has become to be my habit to be aware of things around me since I was a kid. Since I was able to hold a pen, I have been constantly trying to describe all kinds of views by drawing. After graduating from middle school, I was successfully enrolled to one of the most famous No. 15 high school of Arts, which is the only high school focusing on Arts. Since then, my dream of being a professional designer began.
Same as most students, I always paint the thingwhich feels right. But I do not totally understand where does creativity come from and I want to learn more on how to put creativity into practice. I always go to learn and practise in my father’s projects, which is a very important and valued opportunity for me. Time spent during these internships has helped me find the way to connect creativity and practice and also build a great interest in interior design. I am able to create my own design work through careful observation, exquisite feel, and rediscover. Art has helped me realize that inspiration is around me and always in my mind.
In the process of learning, I have realized the uniqueness of traditional Chinese culture and I am fanatical about it. However, I also realized that traditional culture cannot be copied and used mechanically in modern world. Instead, I need to think outside the box and try to combine Chinese culture and Western culture in order to convey traditional Eastern spirit and modern life style under western fashion. Through the format and language that is both familiar and unfamiliar among people, I convey my own unique concept of design and taste of life.
While some students stopover singly creating by hand, I have begun to utilize computers to assist my work. Since my father has his own studio, he has a lot of devices like computers, scanners, hand-painted plates, laser printers, plotting devices etc. Thus, it is very convenient for me to take advantage of them. In addition, the assistants of my father also teach me a lot generously. I am able to use the software of 3dmax, Photoshop, and Coreldraw to help me complete my works. My work portfolio is completed by using these programs.
The works in my portfolio were completed when I was in Grade 10 and 11.

I received the slides from 11 films I took during June 2012 while in Arlington, Massachusetts where my daughter, Maria and I had a gallery show of 76 of my matted and framed photographs and 29 of her art work from June 3-30, 2012. I have scanned 24 or so of them so far and have started editing them as well. This photograph was taken on June 5th of our artists' statements that were hung on the wall by the front table we sat at during the show. You can see the faint reflection on the glass of the statements of some of the photographs that were hung near them. My statement I just had to update and reprint while Maria's, since she has never previously shown any of her art work, we had to write, which we managed to do between us. Mine is on top and Maria's under it. I used my photo of Still Another Perspective on mine and two of hers, Color My World and Red as examples of our work.

Jihye Han, Artist Statement
Throughout cultural experiences in various countries, I have always questioned my subjectivity and felt a sense of separation. The feeling of separation isolates space and imply distance physically, but separation can have different meanings such as physical connection. I explore tangible and intangible relationships within liminality spaces using elements both physical and emotional. I ask myself about my subjectivity “What determines and who controls the line between internal and external or proper and improper? Where do I belong with intersectional identities? Liminality of spaces are created as a way to blur the lines from stereotypes that lies underneath the surface. I envision these obstacles; addressing of my subjectivity, cultural heritage and immigrant’s life, as invisible boundaries that represent my identity, my history and my culture in the boundaries of interior and exterior space while aiming to balance tradition and modernity.
My work seeks to create abstract narratives based on identity, childhood memory, heritage and visual language. In addition, it can be reconciliation between tradition and contemporary art in which reflects on technology and the act of thinking about environmental, cultural and political issues. My works intentions are to transfer my identity and personal experiences into tangible shapes of the body as well as develop immersive environments utilizing clay and mixed media. The sculptural aspects respond to what I see as invisible boundaries developed from a social dialogue. My works hope to illustrate physical properties of time-based and interactive media. I am interested in the ability to allow the audience to see things that they had taken for granted.
Jihye Han earned a BFA in sculpture and ceramics from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MFA in ceramics from the University of North Texas. Han was the recipient of the NCECA’s Graduate Student Fellowship and the award winner for Texas BIPOC ceramic Emerging artist to the Clay Houston TX in 2021. Han is recently selected as a recipient of a 2022 Emerging Artist award by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts(NCECA).
