"Gauge" refers to the distance between the inside edges of the rails. In the United States and much of the world, Standard Gauge is 56 1/2 inches.

The first American railroads used the track gauge common in Great Britain, called the "English Gauge", which varied between 56 and 57 inches. Subsequent railroads in different parts of the country used incompatible track gauges. Therefore, at junctions between railroads, passengers and cargo had to be transferred to different trains. In 1862, Abraham Lincoln established a de facto national standard of 56 1/2 inches. Odd trackages were re-spiked to the standard gauge by 1886.

No evidence conclusively proves how 56 1/2 inches originated. The common hypothesis is that it is related to the wheel spacing of the Ancient Roman carts.

It is hot out. Took Wesley to the pet store earlier and plan to take him to the beach later on this afternoon. I think he is just a little bored. :-)
