homeless esther from the bay area. esther was going up to people asking for money as i walked up. her boyfriend was standing nearby. esther says "why do you want to take my picture? because i look strange?"
"no. because you're interesting and you stand out."

I guess this tree figured it had to do something to get people to take a picture of it.
If you haven't yet been to Muir Woods, it's worth it - just try to go on a weekday. My only option was Saturday morning and the entire world was there - truly, I must have heard a dozen different languages - but all the same it was kind of nice to be around people, on such a solo trip. I went in search of two The Shots, but kept an open mind and this turned out to be one of my favorite photos from the morning.
I see my path, but I don't know where it leads. Not knowing where I'm going is what inspires me to travel it.
Fall foliage scene near the manor house "Westbrook," at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park on Long Island in New York, as shot by my beautiful wife. One of the most colorful creatures on the Islands. This one is "chowing down" on the remains of a marine Iguana. Their color makes them a standout on the black lava rock.

What about? Yes, what about today?
Those who know me well, know that contemporary music is not my preferred genre, yet there are some artists of whom I have their entire repertoire. Barbara Streisand is one of these. She is not everyone’s cup of tea I know, but like her or not, you have to admit that she has a very strong voice which has given her a successful career that has spanned over half a century. In 1969 Barbara Streisand went out on a limb and recorded her first studio album of contemporary pop songs rather than the Broadway torch songs that she was so well known for. The album was called ‘What About Today’ and is named for the first song on the album, written by David Shire and arranged and conducted by Don Costa. Sadly, the album was poorly received. I can see why, and I agree that it isn’t her best album, however I think the opening song ‘What About Today’ is one of the standouts.
This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a monthly challenge called “Freestyle On The Fifth”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each month, and the image is to be posted on the 5th of the month.
This month the theme, “music of 1969” was chosen by Phunny (phunnyfotos)
The lyrics above come from the opening song ‘What About Today’, and they resonated with me when I was doing research and getting inspiration for the FOTF theme ‘music of 1969’. They made me think about the world we are in today which has been hit by the worst pandemic in several generations. It has created tears and fears in me and many others. This inspired me to create a collage of some of the photos I took around the deserted Melbourne CBD when I was still working in my office, prior to working from home. It is one of the few exceptions to the rule I have set myself of not putting up images of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Both Sylvia and I spotted Jess’ standout hair from the other side of the street and after a brief introduction on our intent, we were all walking down a side street looking for a suitable background.
The sun was out and with no shade in sight we made good use of the scrim to provide just the right amount of shade. Sylvia was brilliant standing on the tips of her toes and stretching right out holding the scrim in place over Jess’ head, doing her best not get in the frame.
Jess was an absolute natural in front of the camera, taking directions with ease and looking fabulous and relaxed no matter what angle I shot her from. To say that I was captivated by her natural beauty and poise is an understatement.
Believe it or not Jess had just stepped off a plane from Cape Town, South Africa only a few hours earlier to visit and work with her brother. She had the most intriguing accent and at the end of the shoot we chatted about how we thought she should look into doing some modelling work.
This shot is my favourite from the dozen or so I shot and think that it really shows her style. On a technical note, I have played around a little with the overall softness of this image, pulling down the details and moving away from the tack sharp portraits that I normally post. Personally, I think it suits Jess’ look. I have posted the sharper, less processed version for you to compare. Please feel free to let me know your thoughts… positive or negative… I can handle it!

Meet Catherine
I met Catherine soon after I photographed Hannah - making her my second stranger for the day.
We had actually crossed paths even earlier but she was on the phone so we moved along not wanting to interrupt In fact, on that occasion Leon who was eager to help Dad find interesting strangers had spotted Catherine "wouldn't that person be a cool stranger? ". Catherine's overall personality, her colorful dress and jewelry with the earrings and nose-ring indeed made her standout. Add to that her intense blue/grey eyes and we had a potential stranger for the project
Luckily when we met her again she was eating some frozen yogurt, so we made our way and made our request. I think Catherine was caught a little by surprise but was happy to help. She works at a Vet hospital close-by.- and among the things she likes cooking is high on the list. She was also interested in my motivation for doing the project. After a small chat, since I had figured out the 'good light' shooting with Hannah before, Catherine walked a few steps to the chosen spot and allowed me to click a few quick pictures. Catherine easily followed instructions despite the initial unease holding a straight on gaze but she really surprised with her occasional spontaneous happy burst of smiles revealing a very different personality. I really was unsure of the choice for the project - a happy smiling Catherine or a more direct quiet gaze.
Either ways it was a pleasure photographing you Catherine. Thank you so much for being a part of the project. Wish you all the very best.
