The Atheneum of surgery concept derives from traditional teaching hospitals, where medical education is mainly taught through observation. This Antheneum promotes education on human surgery to the public, where the lost tradition of Anatomical theatre is resuscitated. This building hosts studying, discussion and celebration; people share information and new ideas on surgery here. SITE | BYRES ROAD, WESTERN INFIRMARY Western Infirmary was first built as a teaching hospital. It was a place where world-renowned surgeons, such as Joseph Lister taught students surgical skills through observation of real life practice. This building that captures the traditional method of the study of human surgery, where professional, students and the general public for the first time are invited to watch live surgeries inside the Atheneum.
The brunette is Jenn. The Amgen Tour of California Podium Girls are dressed up as Fly V flight attendants. Jenn's name tag says "Sally." Ashley's name tag says "Heidi."
I think Jenn is a podium girl for 2011 as well. For 2011 Amgen Tour of California photos, please view my 2011 set. As of this writing I have something like 200 unprocessed photos that are still awaiting uploads (including a few of the 2011 podium girls) so please be patient -- I'll them them up as fast as I can!
Stage 4 breast cancer sucks… keeping up with all the pills, shots, infusions, physical therapy, quarterly imaging, appointments, and billing/insurance is a full time job… V handles all of this with humor and grace… she’s an inspiration…

The Beacon - Athenaeum of Mental Health By serving as a reconnecting link between mental health and society, the athenaeum acts as a place of respite but also as an educational resource for the community and those affected by mental health, in order to promote social inclusion and understanding.
As a response to reconnect the awareness of people and food, the Forum for Food is aimed to provide a space that can inform people of the surrounding issues related to the subject - past, present or future. It attempts to raise the awareness so that people can make more informed decisions which encourage sustainable use and practice. Open to people of all backgrounds be that scholars, enthusiasts, active in industry, or the general public - the forum is an open space for discussion, debate, research, exhibition, and engagement.

The project: The brief is for the Atheneum to be a celebration of sound in all its forms and our experience of it. Key to this, is the creation of a wide variety of spaces which allow for performance, experimentation and appreciation of sound across the spectrum from the individual and highly personal level, through to the large and public. this image: The Arcade produces a series of unusual acoustic spaces allowing sounds to be filtered and focused, whilst also adding depth to the street and access to the courtyard within the Atheneum. Once through the arcade the regular rhythm of the colonnade and the spaces within become apparent.

(...) It is a place to discuss and debate. It should be open to all and it shouldn’t have a specific theme. It is not a room to book and close when it’s full but a space in between rooms. It is a main space informed by all the surrounding spaces and, mainly defined by the activity it allows. This is an athenaeum to share both intellectually and physically. It is based on trust; a self-governed space which only appears to exist when inhabited. In this sense, the project becomes about creating space, leaving some clues but not defining it too much. It’s not about forcing people to, but letting them in. Here, people will exchange books, toys, artifacts, ideas and words that they will leave and take with them, hopefully to create a collective memory. To this space, I like to call PLAYGROUND.

The athenaeum is historically known as a reaction to the elitist class -- it is a building which creates a forum for people to come together. The opposite of a private members club, The Partick Athenaeum provides a gathering place within the community. With a focus on community debate and discussion, it provides a solid place to develop Partick’s life and character through the actions of many different people in the community and beyond. An effort to improve the community, for and by locals, allows the athenaeum to become a community hub -- a building that the locals are fully invested in and see as a hope for the future. The athenaeum design omits the use of corridors for circulation. Instead people flow from room to room, much like an old athenaeum plan. This in turn will spark discussion and interaction within the building. The long, thin nature of the athenaeum means that it is one room wide, meaning every space gets a view of the newly formed civic square.
Historically, the athenaeum has been a place to encourage and enhance the teaching of creative disciplines. The Scottish Literary Athenaeum is situated next to the educational hub of the University of Glasgow and has direct links to the creative arts faculty within the university. The use of Scottish literature as a catalyst for activity and the various activities books influence is the driving force throughout the design. Literature is the defining link between writing, reading and performance and the athenaeum aims to pull the three disciplines together. The concept is centred around the book stack being the spine of the building with the activities unfolding from it. The athenaeum aims to educate the public in creative writing and literature through spoken word. The various disciplines allows Scottish literature to be accessible to all.

Using the site's topography and the proximity to the neighbouring church to create spaces of varying natures | By serving as a reconnecting link between mental health and society, the athenaeum acts as a place of respite but also as an educational resource for the community and those affected by mental health, in order to promote social inclusion and understanding. The Beacon provides the opportunity to reconnect with others, to learn and develop new skills whilst architecturally, integrating within the urban environment. The athenaeum makes a transition away from the clinical nature associated with mental health. The site’s location within an existing residential community allows for spaces of a residential nature to be formed whilst the monumental aspect of the church, Battlefield monument and the topography of the area give a grandiose aspect to the site. The proximity to the park creates a direct link with nature.
The Glasgow Gastronomy Athenaeum is a cultural food hub inspired by Glasgow’s local cooks, farmers and food artisans. Through learning, collaboration and creativity, it strives to cultivate an appreciation for our true sustenance, a better understanding of our food system, and a dynamic local economy. The Glasgow Gastronomy Athenaeum believes that a vibrant food culture is the foundation for a community’s quality of life. Serving as a place of commerce, work, and recreation, it will create a venue for community members to engage, discuss and share knowledge with each other to discover the significance of their relationship with food. The Glasgow Gastronomy Athenaeum provides not only a hub for discussing local food and its culture but also a a magical and memorable experience which people can relate to a more healthy and sustainable process by which we consume our food.

The Glasgow Centre of Humanity is a space for the community to come together and collaborate on charitable and ethical projects of their own design - and where they are provided with all the tools and resources to do so. Situated in the heart of the West End, this contemporary atheneum draws upon the academic tradition of the surrounding area and the vibrant out-going nature of the inhabitants to promote a humane approach to both local and global issues. The design concept was to unify Byres Road and Church Street by dividing the site into the Macro and the Micro. The Macro is the main building which holds all the academic facilities. The Micro consists of pavilions and urban spaces that will accommodate workshops, markets and big events that will add dynamism and energy throughout the site.
Mapping is one of the oldest forms of human communication. It allows us to enhance collective understanding and memory through images and models that make complex realities of the world understandable. Maps mediate the inner mental world and the outer physical world, helping us make sense of the universe at different scales. Maps of personal journeys connect the individual to a group through sharing. This Athenaeum aims to showcase the importance of map making today as an expression of visual culture, a tool for way-finding, a chronicle of time and space and a method for better understanding place.

These 4 are also before the start of stage 4 of the 2010 Cycling Tour Down Under. This one started in our area, so I got down early before the start to get a good position. Didn't realise how good until close to the action. The stunning grid girls and the lucky kiss were one thing, but then to meet and have a chat with a cycling legend like Phil Ligget was a thrill. More was to come as I was literally 1 metre from the sign in board when they set it up - thus some great shots of the cyclists to come!
A very well cared for sign. Ostrauer MĂ¼hle is the camping site where we started the stage 4 of our Malerweg.

Looking back to the woodland, just as we were leaving to the right, Felicity in front of me, and two others, not in our group. Unsurprisingly there were quite a lot of steep steps down for our last down of the day.
This woman was my person. Johanna Louise.
She was my toughest critic. I give this woman the credit for the many things I have hesitantly learned to OWN.
My serious scowl, intimidating confidence, my ability to wink as well as any cowboy, and all that’s real about me, as a woman. She was the beginning.
Stage IV Ovarian cancer is no joke. Once diagnosed, it took her life in 48 days. I will miss her every second until I see her face again.
