"Mass wasting" is the geologic term for all forms of landslides - rapid or slow. Many roadcuts and riverbanks are prone to small- and moderate-sized collapse events of rocks & soil. Especially vulnerable sites are often modified using various slope stability measures.
A commonly-used approach to erosion control is the dumping of boulders, but I have never before (or since) seen the use of old junk cars. These trashed vehicles have been deliberately placed along the lower banks of the Tuckasegee River in North Carolina to slow erosion during high-flow events. The overlying slope leads to the edge of a well-used road.

To ensure safety and stability of the boats competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, each is put through a series of tests and measurements to comply with the Volvo Open 70 Rule. The boats are evaluated both on and off the water in order to produce boats that are seaworthy and suitable for long distance racing, along with being fast and easily driven. Among those measurements is the pull down test. With a halyard attached to a point on the shore, the boat is wound down to a heel of approximately 50 degrees while the keel is canted fully to the same side. The automatic keel centering mechanism is then activated to make sure the system works and the boat returns upright.
A member of the Volvo Open 70 Measurement Group visited the PUMA Ocean Racing training base in Lanzarote, Spain, last week to put PUMA’s Mar Mostro through the pull down test. It’s ready to race.

Advancing women’s empowerment contributes to national stability, says DSRSG Walpole at International Women’s Day celebration
Baghdad, 07 March 2019 – International Women’s Day was celebrated today at an event organized by the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women at the Council of Ministers.
The event, which was supported by UN Women and the International Medical Corps, was attended by senior Iraqi government officials, including the two Deputy Speakers of the Council of Representatives, human rights activists, civil society representatives, the international community and many others.
Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) Alice Walpole addressed the meeting, along with Dr. Mahdi Al-Allaq, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, who represented the Prime Minister; Dr. Thikra Alwash, Mayor of Baghdad and Chair of the Standing Committee on the Advancement of Women; UN Women’s Representative, Ms. Dina Zorba and UNFPA Representative, Dr. Oluremi Sogunro; as well as the Director-General of the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women, Dr. Ibtisam Aziz.
In her remarks, DSRSG Walpole welcomed the upcoming discussions in Parliament on updating the Anti-Domestic Violence Law. “We need to acknowledge that domestic violence diminishes and shames all of society; it is a threat not just to women but to society itself,” she emphasised.
Reflecting on the challenges facing displaced women across Iraq, DSRSG Walpole noted that “They continue to suffer the brutal consequences of the recent conflict”.
“Female-headed households should be prioritised in accessing public services,” she said, and called on the Ministries of Defence and Interior, and the National Operations Command, to “to ensure that secure clearance mechanisms are coordinated among security actors to minimize re-screening of individuals already screened; and to consider removing security clearance requirements for civilians who have not been charged with a criminal or terrorism-related offence, so they do not face obstacles in accessing public services, including civil registries and courts”.
DSRSG Walpole also noted the high unemployment rate amongst young women, which is double that of men. She called on the government to “offer small business grants to female entrepreneurs to help them into the business arena, in particular to women returnees in the liberated areas, and those heading households”.
“Advancing women’s economic empowerment in this way will contribute to the government’s efforts to achieve national stability,” she noted.

Chevy Impala for 2011 introduced at Hank Graff Davison for the annual fall Chevy Impala sales event. Over the years the Chevy Impala has become synonymous with Hank Graff Davison. We are Chevy Impala! Spanning nine generations the Chevy Impala has become the refined jewel of the large sedan market, in fact it is the number one best selling large sedan in America. Hank Graff Davison is the nation’s premier retailer of Chevy Impalas. Nine generations of Chevy Impala and it is still ahead of its time with an electronic stability control system. It will be required on all cars by 2012. You don't have to wait - this important safety feature is already standard in every Impala. StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control assists the driver with directional control of the vehicle in difficult driving conditions. If it detects a difference, it selectively applies brake pressure to the appropriate wheel to help get the vehicle back on track. Need more reasons to attend the Chevy Impala fall sales event? How about Automatic Crash Response from OnStar? The Chevy Impala offers the security of OnStar, with Automatic Crash Response, standard for the first six months. Built-in vehicle sensors can send an alert to OnStar. Even if you don't respond, an OnStar Advisor can request that emergency help be sent right away. You can get additional details and driving directions as well as hours of operation by visiting www.hankgraffdavison.com or phone us at 810-653-4111. We are Chevy Impala!

Kaymaklı Underground City is contained within the citadel of Kaymaklı in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. First opened to tourists in 1964, the village is about 19 km from Nevşehir, on the Nevşehir-Niğde road. The ancient name was Enegup. The houses in the village are constructed around the nearly one hundred tunnels of the underground city. The tunnels are still used today as storage areas, stables, and cellars. The underground city at Kaymaklı differs from Derinkuyu in terms of its structure and layout. The tunnels are lower, narrower, and more steeply inclined. Of the four floors open to tourists, each space is organized around ventilation shafts. This makes the design of each room or open space dependent on the availability of ventilation.
A stable is located on the first floor. The small size of the stable could indicate that other stables exist in the sections not yet opened. To the left of the stable is a passage with a millstone door. The door leads into a church. To the right of the stables are rooms, possibly living spaces.
Located on the second floor is a church with a nave and two apses. Located in front of the apses is a baptismal font, and on the sides along the walls are seating platforms. Names of people contained in graves here coincide with those located next to the church, which supports the idea that these graves belonged to religious people. The church level also contains some living spaces.
The third floor contains the most important areas of the underground compound: storage places, wine or oil presses, and kitchens. The level also contains a remarkable block of andesite with relief textures. Recently it was shown that this stone was used as a pot to melt copper.[1] The stone was hewn from an andesite layer within the complex. In order for it to be used in metallurgy, fifty-seven holes were carved into the stone. The technique was to put copper ore into each of the holes (about 10 centimetres (3.9 in) in diameter) and then to hammer the ore into place. The copper was probably mined between Aksaray and Nevsehir. This mine was also used by Asilikhoyuk, the oldest settlement within the Cappadocia Region.
The high number of storage rooms and areas for earthenware jars on the fourth floor indicates some economic stability. Kaymaklı is one of the largest underground settlements in the region. The large area reserved for storage in such a limited area appears to indicate the need to support a large population underground. Currently only a fraction of the complex is open to the public
