On February 11, 1861, President elect Abraham Lincoln gave a farewell speech to his friends in Springfield at this train station. He boarded the train and spent the next four years guiding the Union states through the American Civil War. Lincoln eventually returned to Springfield on May 3, 1865, on a Funeral Train.

The disused Springfield Brewery that made Springfield Bitter from 1873 to 1991. The site was originally chosen because of its high quality springwater. In its last few years it was owned by Mitchells and Butlers.

The Brewery's Victorian listed buildings were gutted by fire in 2004 but plans are still on the board to preserve them as part of a redevelopment.

Public Square was platted in 1823, and it remains the heart of the City of Springfield. The Old State Capitol, along with the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices and numerous other historic buildings surround the square.
