The corn dog, named first the crusty cur and then the CozyDog was invented here by Ed Waldmire Jr.
Abraham Lincoln moved here in 1837 and spearheaded the effort to moved the state capital from Vandalia to Springfield.
Lights on the left is City Hall, and the white lights of trees around the plaza. The red and green lights are on the bank across the street.

Engraving of the P.P. Emory Brass Foundry and offices. Note railroad roundhouse (for repair and storage of railcars and engines) in the background with a passenger train passing in front of it; parked freight cars are closer in the image and on the right background another passenger train is moving on the rails. Still further back, a rail bridge spanning the Connecticut River. The engraving is meant to convey the fact that Springfield was a major hub of railroads and commerce in 1895 as well as show a major local business.

This image appears to have been the source for this print by Alfred Lewis Clarke. Clarke's print probably dates to the last quarter of the 19th century, but the date listed is February, 13, 1832 - my source for the date given above.
