During the mid-1800s, the common practice was to fence in one's crops while letting livestock roam free. Fences were very important for keeping animals from eating the pioneers' crops. During winters many farmers split logs into rails for use in fence building the following spring. A common fence, the stake and rider, was built by stacking rails on top of each other in a zig-zag pattern that resembled a snake. After five courses of rails had been built, stakes were placed in the corners to support the fence at its weakest points, creating an “x”. A rider is a rail placed on top on two sets of stakes to support weight and increase the strength of the fence.
We visited split for only one day because the house that we were staying at in-between Split and Omis and most of our contacts were in Omis. However, from what we saw, it was still a very beautiful city. Split is the capital of Croatia, so it is a bigger city and more touristy than Omis. It also has a port where you can take a ferry to Italy if you wish.
We played on the streets during our afternoon there in order to promote our gigs in Omis.

Split [split] (italienisch Spalato, entstanden aus griechisch ἀσπάλαθος, aspálathos) ist die zweitgrößte Stadt Kroatiens. Sie ist die größte Stadt Südkroatiens und gilt daher im Volksmund als „Hauptstadt Dalmatiens“, ohne dass ihr dieser Status je offiziell zugesprochen wurde. Die Stadt ist Verwaltungssitz der Gespanschaft Split-Dalmatien (kroatisch Splitsko-dalmatinska županija), die den zentralen Teil Dalmatiens umfasst. Split zählte 2011 etwa 167.000 Einwohner.[1] Dies entsprach 3,885 Prozent der gesamten Bevölkerung Kroatiens.[2]
Split ist eine bedeutende Hafenstadt und Sitz der katholischen Erzdiözese Split-Makarska. In Split befindet sich zudem die Universität Split. Die Ursprünge der Stadt sind auf den Diokletianspalast zurückzuführen. Die Innenstadt von Split mitsamt dem Diokletianspalast wurde 1979 von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt.
Split is one of Croatia's bigger cities and has an interesting old town. We were able to see the majority of the sights in three quarters of a day's relaxed exploration and spent the remaining quarter drinking excellent Croatian coffee and beer.

Split-Rocker is a disjointed combination of two children’s rocking toys in the shapes of a horse and a dinosaur. The work is a very personal one for Koons, since the toy pony had belonged to his son Ludwig. The sculpture’s fractured nature contrasts with the bilateral symmetry of the Easyfun mirrors and can be interpreted in relation to the split Koons experienced from his child, and to his own tense psychological state at the time of its production. Additionally, the form evokes the constructions of Pablo Picasso, one of Koons’s artistic heroes. In 2000, Koons replicated Split-Rocker at enormous scale as a topiary sculpture reminiscent of his well-known floral Puppy from 1992." - Whitney Museum of American Art
