My fascination with Banana Splits has gone back to my childhood. They are the only dessert that can be rationalized into containing all of the food groups, thus making it a well balanced meal.
When I found a simpler recipe for this cupcake from a baking magazine in the 70s era that I found at a used book fair, I knew it would be worth the ten cents to buy. :)
I took it home and made it from their directions, and it was just OK... Didn't scream "I'm a banana split! In a cupcake!!!" to me loudly enough. Then I started making ingredient changes every time I made them. All in all, this took about a year to perfect. I've tried different flavored cake mix bases, different amounts of extracts, and about 35 different icing recipes. Some were better than others, and I finally arrived here.
The final recipe can be found here, at: www.kipingitreal.com/?p=58

"Split is the second-largest city of Croatia and the largest city of the region of Dalmatia. It lies on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, centred on the Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian. Spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings, Split's greater area includes the neighboring seaside towns as well. An intraregional transport hub and popular tourist destination, the city is a link to numerous Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula." (source: Wikipedia)
