I gave the splash guards a light sanding as the paint was a bit heavy on the edges and I discovered this AMT logo. Didn't know it was there.

Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). On surface showing head, blowhole and splashguard. The hair follicles or stovebolts on head have been damaged by fighting. Pacific Ocean, Bahia San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Three years ago, I was riding my bike on the Yough River Trail late at night, ultimately on my was to DC. It had been warm and wet during the day and the cooling night air had made it foggy and my headlamp didn't reach very far ahead.
"Rock!"
I was past Dawson approaching the River's Edge Family Campground at nearly midnight when, out of the fog there was suddenly a rock. And not just any rock; a ten cubic foot block of doom. The kind of monstrosity they set out at road intersections to keep redneck 4x4's off of the bike trail.
I even said the word out-loud when this rock was suddenly dead ahead and there was nothing I could do. The front wheel hit square on and Newton's Second Law took over. I had hit my brakes in a desperate attempt to avoid the impact but I fear I only slowed myself down enough to ensure that I didn't have enough momentum to clear the rock myself. I went over the handlebars and landed on the rock with my chest. After recovering myself and realizing that I didn't experience the excruciating pain that one would expect with broken ribs, I thought about my bike. Shit! The front wheel must be a pretzel.
Except that it wasn't. By some miracle the front wheel was still perfectly round. However, the front fork was bent straight back so that the wheel was scraping against the frame. I removed the splashguard and there was just enough clearance between the wheel and the frame to make it rideable but to do so felt weird. With the wheel back so far the bike was unstable, like riding with your hands close together. If I turned the wheel too far, my feet would hit the wheel as I pedaled. My GPS had come loose and, in the fall, had lost the left 1/8 inch of the LCD display.
There was much cursing at the night. But cursing wasn't going to help me so I got back on my bike and made my way to Connellsville where I utilized a bike rack as a lever to pry my front fork back into some sort of shape.
You can read the entire story of that weekend at www.tasigh.org/gps/gap2004.html
There have been a number of people who cast doubt on my description of how big the rock was so here is a picture of it.

I have a 02 WRX wagon and have been looking for OEM-style mudflaps. I ended up buying Subaru's RS splashguards (part number #J1010FE220). The front ones need to be modified to fit on the front of the WRX wagon. I carved them out with a dremel and box cutter.
The dremel helped, but if you're careful, doing it with a knife only is very possible.
The rostrum (top of the mouth) sometimes called the "snout" with its little lumpy tubercles are seen on the humpback whale just ahead of the blowhole. These tubercles are actually hair follicles and are characteristic of Humpback whales.
Observed in Monterey Bay, California.
My favorite ! I used some extremely rare Kauila, dark orange in color, for the tops, pheasant wood for the splashguard, curly Koa for the gunwales, Milo for the outriggers and Hau for the float (ama).

An interesting invention. I have never seen these anywhere before. It would seem that they didn't trust the patients.

English Electric Balloon tram car 717 was restored back to it's 1930's condition (all bar sliding sunshine roof panels)... this photo shows the view along the interior of the upstairs saloon, with curved quarterlight windows adding a light and airy feel to the interior - whilst the half-drop opening windows have been retained, and splashguards outside the windows are in place too which allow the windows to be opened about 3 inches without rain pouring in. The fluorescent lighting is not original, but the perspex covers have been patterned to give an art-deco feel to them.
My parents set this tree out when they first built the house and moved in, somewhere around 1949 or 1950. It was a sapling then. There was an old Firestone sign used as a splashguard/water guide under the sink on the back porch. The water was channeled down to the area around the roots of this tree. To the left of the tree, there were yellow and orange cannas, if I remember correctly. Somewhere there where the "new" part of the house is (1969), there was a flowering quince. And between the back porch and the oak tree, we kids used to dig for earthworms before my dad's fishing trips.
The top deck of English Electric Balloon 700, the pioneer of the fleet, whilst some aspects of this are worthy of the original restoration work it had done (such as the quarterlights, most welcome on this sunny day, the dropdown windows, the window splashguards, and the swingover seating), the original interior had been chucked into a skip and so when this tram was restored everything you see inside was built from scratch. Also, the Balloons originally had sliding sunshine roofs - but currently none of the Balloons have these now.
